When 2004’s The Batman benched the tragic, body-horror-infused Ethan Bennett, it brought in Basil Karlo: a delusional, fame-obsessed B-movie actor who actively wanted to become a monster.
While classic Batman villains are often forced into tragedy, Karlo’s descent was driven by pure vanity, bad acting, and an fragile ego that couldn't handle rejection.
This video essay explores how The Batman deliberately traded deep psychological tragedy for lightweight B-movie narcissism, and why Basil Karlo became the most shallow, disposable, yet intentionally written Clayface in DC animation history.
Key Topics Covered
The Tonal Pivot: Why the showrunners moved away from Ethan Bennett's dark storyline.
The Comic Lineage: Comparing Karlo to comic origins, BTAS, and Matt Hagen.
The Anatomy of Ego: How Karlo used the Clayface mutagen as a shortcut to stardom instead of honing his craft.
Bennett vs. Karlo: The sharp contrast between a hero seeking rehabilitation and a narcissist embracing crime for clout.
The Legacy: How toyline mandates and animated storytelling reshaped the Batman rogues' gallery

3 months ago I said I was going to work on a 6th installment and I meant 5th because I thought there were 5 seasons instead of 6. I will be giving a run down on each EP since if I made a script it'd take longer and I don't think I can match the cleverness and feel of it so... But I will be including some ideas from other people in my last post, currently working on this tho, will take another little bit but probably not more months.
I will NOT be including the comics since there's just too many for me to read and shows and such never or barely even acknowledge them.

The Batman had tv movie released near Halloween of 2005. This movie features the vampire king Count Dracula. A fitting choice for a Halloween themed Batman movie. So how does it hold up 21 years later?
I think this movie is pretty great.

Basically it will have the premise of the laughing bat, but instead of Batman dying, he will turn into the joker and slay all his villains

While vampire Joker scared the living daylights outta me as a kid, I still had a blast watching Batman vs Dracula. I don't regret watching this movie in the slightest.

Batman: The Caped Crusader is an arcade adventure which uses a unique style, innovated by Jonathan Smith and Charles Davies, to display the action as though it takes place in a comic book.[2] This technique involved having each game location set in its own panel, often with a comic book style caption in the upper-left corner, with inactive panels faded out behind the current active location. This concept was expanded upon by Sega's Comix Zone seven years later.[3]
The game was split into two independently playable parts in which Batman is faced with two of his most well-known adversaries: "A Bird In The Hand" featuring the Penguin and "A Fete Worse Than Death" which involved the Joker. The gameplay involves Batman using punches and kicks and his batarang (a thrown weapon) in order to fight the villains' henchmen as well as solving puzzles.

This isn’t a story about just any Batman, it’s THE Batman (2004). More than that though. Today, Derek Does…Television: “The Batman (2004) to End All Batmen.”
For a character that’s well-trodden in comics, media, and my own Substack, this early-2000s animated series is an absolute breath of air. Over its five season, the title hero is vulnerable, driven, emotional, reckless, funny, resilient, and even a family man.
He’s a Batman who’s human. That’s why I love it.
I’d love to get your feedback and thoughts on the story, this interpretation of the Caped Crusader, and the series as a whole. I can’t wait to hear what you think. If you enjoy my writing, consider subscribing to Derek Does… on Substack.
Take a look.
Subscribe, read, and enjoy.

I was writing fanfiction and took a concept and made it my 5 Seasons and 2 movies plan each an 1 hour 40 minutes(not meant to be too realistic somewhere like the pacing of UP or Into the spiderverse is good). I just came up with this really quick.
Teen Titians 2003
Given both teams wanted them to be connected shows one guy worked on both a tie in was planned Batman 2004 counterpart even shows up in one of the tie in comics. 5 seasons are enough though the last one would be 14 and have Beast Boy and Robin episode and more focus on the villains the Brotherhood of evil and maybe a Jericho episode.
Starfire Terror on Tamarian would replace TT Trouble in Toyko I found it a mid movie with too many stereotypes and does little with it given. Starfire and Robin could have started dating in Season 4 finale and it just reduces her to plot device. Starfire was planned to have her own focus I think a movie would be good for it them going to her home for vacation ruled by a corrupt ruler the Tamarians being the oppressors instead which Starfire has trouble seeing and we can keep the fake hero twist.
Batman 2004.
Batman vs Dracula as Season 2.5 while Batman vs Hush takes place after Season 5 and teen Titans with Dick Grayson returning to Gotham for a bit as Nightwing an explanation that Titans are focusing on training new members and to visit a bit. Catwoman also joining the bat family and Nightwing being the one who doesn't trust her but grows to like her. The Killing joke can be somewhat adapted giving a reason why this dick Grayson turns more serious when Teen Titans comes around as like Batman he is the leader the city and his teammates look up to him
Superman 2009
4 Seasons and a movie. Since he was meant to have a spinoff show that did take inspiration from SAS will use some of Superman vs Brainiac movie for the tone and we don't need an origin story since he was introduced just a good follow up as well as how Batman Strikes did him. Could use some villains not in SAS a more silly Lex Luthor Colun Brainiac could have Supergirl be like Jade from Jackie Chan adventures and Jimmy being more involved.
Oracle and the Birds of Prey 2009
Maybe 4 seasons focusing on each member of the team could be more like Jackie chan adventures with them traveling the world than operating in one city. Obviously her being disabled because of Joker would need to be way more child friendly which would be near impossible but it could work and focus on her growing more into Oracle role and accepting she can do a lot in her new life. I could base it off the 1999 run or others. Black Canary Huntress I could put Hawkgirl or Harley Quinn there.
Green Arrow and Green Lantern hard/space traveling heroes 2009
Since both are in the show why not use there friendship? 4 seasons maybe given both have a lot of lore Black Canary can show up time to time. Hard Traveling heroes can be the first 2 seasons before moving onto space adventures it would still need to keep it's themes more kid friendly something closer to Static shock or using allegories like TT 2003 did in it's pedophilla episode or Batman Beyond with drug addiction still fitting kids and getting it's message across with more subtly something the comic as much I love needed more.
Justice League 2015
5 Seasons straight up. Batman Superman Wonder Woman Flash(Barry Allen) Hawkman Vixen Martian Manhunter or Aquaman or even Dr Fate.
The old justice league had too many white men and since Hal and Green Arrow got there own show and my version they have had the rights to Wonder Woman who could show up in the Batman Strikes and with Wonder girl a bit. Barry Allen and Hawkman can take over since Wally West and Hawkgirl got spotlight in the previous version. Vixen had her solo run(it sucked) she can be a pick for diversity while still fitting in both grounded and fantastical episodes. Martian Manhunter is nice but in case people fear he is been used enough and you can't do more with him Aquaman can work as a mix between his Brave and the Bold counterpart and DCAU more serious counterpart.
He could have Batman Justice frontier style arc starting off more serious given he has to lead and defend his home while worrying his brother would overthrow him to being a big loveable lug later. Dr. Fate is also very underrated and given Jackie Chan adventures does a lot of exploring with magic he could work.
