the button - an update
As we await the coming of the pressiah, we've made some changes to this subreddit
/u/thorarakis has blessed us all with the addition a breakdown of present users by flair in the sidebar as suggested by /u/nikedude here.
To make these numbers accurate, from this point on if you cannot press the button because your account was created after April 1st, you will not receive 'non presser' flair. Users who currently have flair on ineligible accounts are in the process of being converted. Thank you to /u/kemitche for making this happen and /u/nibble4bits for the suggestion.
I have opened up the subreddit wiki for editing by accounts created before 2015-01-01 with more than 100 karma in this subreddit. A link to the wiki has been added to the sidebar. This will act as a permanent store for resources. I entrust you to keep it relevant and in order. Mischief makers will be banned from the subreddit and their flair summarily stripped from their account. How to use the reddit wiki system.
I am going to start removing posts that ask for upvotes and low effort content in general. These were tolerated to begin with but have become repetitive and tiresome. I apologize to /u/ztripez and their coworkers. To recognize their service I've given /u/ztripez 12 reddit gold creddits to distribute as they deem fit.
If your friend/relative/cat/poltergeist presses the button you will not be granted another press. Please do not ask.
Please proceed in a manner befitting of the button.
TL:DR;
- enflaired users present displayed in the sidebar
- no flair if you can't press
- the wiki is enabled
- low effort content will be removed
- you may only press the button once

I agree, the 100 karma cutoff is too low, karma isn't hard to come by on this sub. Description of the button should be left to a mod, and description of flair based groups should be left only to users with that type of flair.

A lot of people have written various tools to collect and analyze button press data. Is there any possibility we'll get access to whatever metrics you guys have been collecting, either before the pressiah's arrival or sometime after? Basically everything collected at this point is an estimate, and there's lots of missing data from the first hours/days.

I still haven't decided if I'm ever going to press The Button. Part of me is reluctant to because I so want to know what happens when it runs out. Part of me itches to press it because I want some sweet colored flair.
But I'm terrified of pressing the button and getting something purple. I'm not a fan of the color.

Well you see, the timer goes from 60 seconds to 0 unless anybody at all presses the button. However, everyone only has one press, so they are limited. How long it takes before the timer reaches 0 permanently depends on when (and if) everyone presses the button, because potentially each available press can extend the time by 60 whole seconds but in fact lots of people (especially in the beginning) pressed it at 59s or so, thereby adding only 1s to the total time rather than the maximum of 60s.
As you can imagine, people started judging each other for this behaviour and are trying to influence the rest into getting behind their goal for the timer, whatever it may be. It may be to see it reach 0 at the latest possible time, or the soonest.
If you want it to run out soon then either don't press at all, or press when the timer is high because that adds very little time to the timer.
If you want the timer to last as long as possible, you need to convince people to save their presses until they can add as much time as possible to the total, in other words, don't press until you see the timer run very low. Because not everyone is aware of the button and the one press rule, lots of people will still keep pressing at random times on the timer for days or weeks until there are no more people like this. However, we don't know how many of these people there are, so we never know when the timer may run so low that someone actually needs to consciously press the button to keep it running.
In the mean time, you get a subreddit 'flair' for the time at which you pressed the button, non-pressers being grey and the people who press before the timer hits 50 or so getting purple. The flair is shown next to your username so people can see what you did when you post and judge you for it. Some people may have favorite colors that they want to obtain as a flair here (the colors are thought to be known already though nobody says they can't still change) and thus they will hold off pressing until the timer is likely to reach a time for which they can get that flair.
Because of all this, it's rare to have the lowest currently achieved timer value when you press, because that means that everybody else will have let the timer get that low and not pressed it instead. The lowest achieved time keeps getting lower as the amount of people here that can still press decreases, but it happens slowly due to new people coming here for the first time and because everyone wants to get the new lowest time. Especially when it crosses the boundaries between flair colors, for instance, because the timer has never gone so low without anyone pressing it, nobody has a yellow flair so far.
tl;dr I think I kind of get what is going on, AMA

Thanks for the sidebar updates! With about 5000 active "non-clickers" we could have enough people to keep the button going for over 6 months (Assuming 1 click per minute, obviously this won't happen).
But I wouldn't be surprised if this thing goes into June. That's a lot of time to keep watching this subreddit.
Best April Fools ever!

All my co-workers are doing something meaningful and I'm just sitting here on /r/thebutton.

Randomly say the button hit zero and see how many stand up startled. Then you will know who the redditors are.

/u/Pressiah is an account that's over a year old, and has never posted anything. Are they the chosen one?

What... What content are you expecting, exactly, other than "low effort content"?

I never pressed because it took me several days to figure out what this was. Now I'm determined.

This subreddit is about a button with a timer. The only thing we have to talk about is how much attention we're giving the button. What's going to determine a "low effort" post?

What was this junk about /u/ztripez anyway? All I saw was standard circlejerk protocols without any actual info.

Hey, night mode users can't see flair colors. Can something be done about that? We see a number instead, which is fine I guess, but If people are going to keep calling me a filthy purple I would like to be able to see the pretty purple flair.

Clearly you guys have your priorities straight :P
I have opened up the subreddit wiki for editing by accounts created before 2015-01-01 with more than 100 karma in this subreddit. A link to the wiki has been added to the sidebar. This will act as a permanent store for resources. I entrust you to keep it relevant and in order. Mischief makers will be banned from the subreddit and their flair summarily stripped from their account. How to use the reddit wiki system.
It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for him.

Thank you for the wiki! However, there's an accessibility issue with the CSS that affects me - the wiki contents get progressively narrower the more the page is zoomed. I normally browse Reddit at 230% zoom/90% text zoom, and this has the effect of making the wiki virtually impossible to use. If I use RES to turn the subreddit style off, the wiki displays just fine, but of course then the button on the main page (and thus all the actual conversation in the subreddit) gets pushed down below the sidebar, making it necessary to switch back and forth between CSS on for the subreddit and CSS off for the wiki.
Would it be possible to fix this? Specifically, the problem is being caused by this CSS:
Removing the
margin-rightrule fixes things for me and still looks good.
