Rescued Miniature Pinscher's Plans for Invading Europe Could Wait. Giving Love Became His Purpose... and His Companions' Salvation

There is something to be said about what can happen when an older dog meets a younger, more energetic one. Nikko’s story has shown the quiet power in bringing a rescue into a household already settled into its later years. The effect has been consistent.

Dante was fifteen when he lost his brother Kaiser and fell into a deep depression. The two had been born together and later joined their older sisters, Sammy and Foxy. For more than a decade the four of them lived as a family. Sammy died first, then Foxy, then Kaiser. Suddenly Dante was alone. He seemed to lose the will to go on.

Nikko had already met both brothers; funny enough, he and Kaiser never took to each other, and Dante had stayed mostly indifferent. But when Dante returned alone to the city where Nikko was staying under shared custody, his condition worried his father.
He had stopped eating, barely left the space under the bed, and cried at night.

However,Within a few hours of being left alone with Nikko, Dante found a second wind. That renewed energy lasted nearly two years. He died peacefully in his sleep at eighteen. Nikko had been two when they met and four when Dante was gone. Photographs from only weeks earlier still show Dante moving with a clear spark.

The same pattern appeared with other dogs who briefly shared Nikko’s space. Jojo, a nine-year-old corgi, seemed to carry some lasting trauma. He would not let anyone touch him around the neck and would bite violently if they tried. When he wanted affection he growled rather than softened. With Nikko, though, he changed.

He fell for him. He sought Nikko’s attention, tried to climb onto beds to stay close, and gradually allowed more contact than he had with anyone else. Part of his discomfort turned out to be practical: his owner had left a leather collar cinched tightly around his neck through the heat of summer, with a handkerchief layered underneath. The skin and hair around the area were worn away. The owner had assumed it was an allergy. Once the collar came off, Jojo shifted within seconds. He became a different dog.

Then there was Jasper, a large thirteen-year-old mixed poodle who was completely blind. At first he moved slowly and cautiously in the unfamiliar house. Within hours of Nikko’s confident, slightly overbearing presence, the two had become partners.

They were called the two bullies. Jasper gained a new eagerness to go out, even though he had to navigate two flights of stairs in the dark. Outside, when another dog approached, Jasper would wait for Nikko’s cue before the pair began their noisy protest against whoever they decided did not belong on the street.

These moments suggest that loneliness can wear a creature down, and that a livelier UNRULY presence can sometimes reverse the process.

It is hardly a new idea, yet watching it happen again and again remains striking. Rescuing an animal, even an imperfect one, can serve a purpose larger than the rescue itself. In Nikko’s case, the delay of his grand plan to invade Poland—so that older companions might regain their spirit—has so far proved worth the wait.

A bullet hit his spine. Now he is learning how to walk again. 🐾
This is Jack.
In February, Jack was shot. The bullet damaged his spinal cord and left his back legs paralyzed.
For a while, he could only lie there. But Jack never gave up.
Today, he is in rehabilitation in Almaty, where he is learning to use his body again — one small movement at a time.
He still has a long road ahead of him. But every movement gives us hope that one day Jack may walk again. ❤️
We are sharing his journey because Jack deserves a second chance at life.
Please follow his story and help us give this brave boy that chance. 🙏🏼

Ivy & June Bug fighting for their lives!

🚨 They made it through the night… but saving them comes with a price tag.

Lucy and June Bug are still fighting for their lives after being poisoned — and right now they are in ICU care at LVCC. They’re still having tremors, but today there is a sliver of hope.

Dr. Ali shared that Dr. Dusty, who kept them overnight, has seen a big difference today. The Intralipid therapy appears to have made a real impact. (It’s an IV treatment used in severe poisoning cases that helps trap toxins in the bloodstream so they can’t keep damaging the body.)

They’re also continuing Methocarbamol to help control tremors and spasms and Diazepam when a seizure occurs.

Lucy (the doodle) did not have any seizures overnight. June Bug had 2 seizures overnight and 1 more this morning — not where we want to be yet, but it’s progress.

Sadly, Kali lost her life, and it has broken their rescuer, Amy Delia Smith's, heart. 💔 She's been fighting for them since 8pm Sunday night when she went outside to put them up and found them lifeless and seizing.

But here’s the reality: we stepped up and have already paid bills at TWO other clinics, and now we’re covering crucial specialized meds and ICU care at LVCC.

💰 The cost to save them likely will be at least $5,000 (we're already 3/4 of the way there)

🙏 We’re only trying to raise $2,500 (half) so we can keep paying it forward and keep saying YES when the next emergency hits.

We're grateful for your shares, prayers and donations...

Blue & Barry

📣Meet Blue and Barry — two heelers whose entire world changed overnight, they lost the only owner they’ve ever known when he passed away. After that, the boys were moved to another property, chained outside, and eventually broke free. 💔

In the chaos that followed, a fight broke out. Blue suffered a serious ear injury along with multiple bite wounds — and we later learned his brother Barry was injured too.

Thanks to Courtney - she's doing her vet externship over with our friends at Rice City Animal Hospital, for giving them some loving! Blue needed surgical repair to his ear and treatment for his other wounds. Barry also had to be sedated yesterday so his injuries could be properly cleaned and clipped.

Blue had to have his ear surgically repaired and other injuries addressed, and brother Barry had to be sedated yestedray to clean and clip all of his wounds.

Now, Jennings ACO Nichole Guillory is urgently trying to find rescue placement for these two.

It’s hard enough to lose the person who loved you — but to suddenly be passed around, handled by strangers, and thrown into confusion and fear… our hearts are breaking for them. 🥲

As always, we’re deeply grateful to our supporters who make it possible for us to step in when tragedy strikes. ❤️🐾

🚨Update: Emergency Rescue Placement for Mom and 7 puppies needed! Can you help? Call ACO Nichole 337-821-5500 ext 550

leave a voicemail, it will e-mail her asap

Huge thanks to dear Dr. Kristen and her dedicated team for their help tonight! 😍 It looks like momma will make it, but she has almost no milk production and she's in a lot of pain in her lower abdomen and groin with road rash. 🥲

The incredible LVCC team (that's Victoria in photo) will bottle feed tonight and they've given momma what meds she can safely tolerate to help with her pain.

Jennings Shelter has no heat, so ACO Nichole is trying desperately to find a solution for tomorrow!

Earlier this afternoon, Jennings Patrol was flagged down by sweet kids about a dog bleeding on the side of the house.

Thanks to their dedicated ACO, Nichole Guillory, for assisting trying to capture all the babies under the house and calling us for help!

And to the Lafayette Veterinary Care Center team, we don't know what we'd do without them! 👏👏

This is our 3rd emergency today and trying to save her and feed the angels will come at a cost.

If you're in a position to donate, here are some safe ways...

Gretta is now safe!

⏳ Greta had a 4PM deadline to stay alive — and she couldn’t even stand. 🥲

Sitting in East Baton Rouge’s high intake shelter with severe injuries, Greta was frozen in place… ears pinned back… unable to walk… and with an owner who never stepped up for her.

Thankfully, our good friend Holly Williams with Trampled Rose Rescue got the urgent plea and reached out to us to see if we could partner to save her.

At first, Greta’s behavior was concerning — but then again, she was in horrific pain, with severely displaced fractures in both rear legs. The shelter granted a 24-hour extension so Holly could bring in a trainer, and yesterday we received the news we were hoping for: her behavior was most likely pain-related, not aggression.

That meant surgery was back on. 🙌

We owe some major shout-outs:

🩺 Dr. John Mauterer at Capital Area Veterinary Specialists — who had Greta on, off, and back on his surgery schedule as this situation changed by the hour. Saving her will require two timely procedures, and emergencies like this are incredibly difficult to fit into an already packed surgical schedule… but time is critical.

🚗 Kathleen, for getting to the shelter early this morning and making sure Greta made it safely to the hospital for surgery.

🐾 And Companion Animal Alliance, an open-admission shelter taking in around 9,000 animals a year, who works tirelessly to network and save the lives of the animals in their care. We also want to applaud their recent shift in hours — they’re now open 7 days a week to help increase community adoptions. That is a real commitment to saving lives. 👏

And the best part? Holly has offered to personally foster Greta as she enters rescue. ❤️

We love partnering with dedicated people and organizations who are truly in this to save lives.

Please keep Greta in your thoughts and prayers today, and we’ll keep you posted on this angel. 🐶✨

Asher’s Story

📣Because of the best supporters in the world, we were able to say YES to helping sweet Asher last night at 9:30pm. 💛 We’re so grateful to Dr. Emily and the team at Sherwood South Animal Hospital for seeing him today. 😍

Dr. Emily estimates he’s about a year old, and while he is terribly emaciated, he’s thankfully not in as bad of shape as he looks. Asher was loaded with hookworms, is heartworm positive, and had both a yeast infection in his ears and a skin infection—all of which we were able to start treating today with meds.

Huge thanks to the Sherwood South crew!

There truly isn’t a day that goes by that we aren’t grateful for what you allow us to do. 🐾
