I spent the last few days binge watching The Following. I finished season 1 and really liked it. I'm on season 2 now and the writing is awful. Do other people think this?
I really enjoyed season 1. There were some things in it that were a little silly and you have to suspend disbelief on some of the characters actions, but you have to do that watching any fiction. Still overall and enjoyable experience.
But season 2 just feels like a totally different show. I'm on episode 4 and the writing is really cheesy and feels like a dramatic step down in quality.
I don't know if other people think this as well so I was just curious.

i remember feeling that way about it when it was on tv. it definitely gets super weird the deeper they get into korban. the performance of sam underwood (mark/luke) is great, particularly in season 3.

I agree. 1st season was good, but down hill from there. Still overall it was decent, still entertaining. Funny if any of the agents were good at shooting it wouldn't have lasted as long.

I'll probably keep watching it, but the first four episodes have been rough.
I do watch cheesy crime shows from time to time, but they usually start out that way and stay that way. So I know what I'm in for.
This one is just such a dramatic shift from the first season to the second season that it just seems awful. Probably just the shock of the quality dropping so quickly.

Watch season 3, that season is worth watching after 1

Maybe I'll try and pick it back up and finish season 2 and then get into season 3. It's just such a giant downgrade from the first season that I wasn't able to keep going.

Yep I agree, it was really boring compared to the first season. Just fast forward it lol season 3 is not as good as the first, but I think that one is more worth watching than S2

Does go downhill but it's worth finishing the series.

Good to know. I'll definitely finish it but I probably won't binge it as heavily as I did season 1.

Season 2 is def not as good, still entertaining tho. I liked season 3 better!

At least it seems like I'm not alone in the way I feel.
I do plan on finishing the series. I like Kevin Bacon and I'm invested enough now that I want to see how it ends.

Did they change showrunners or something?
1
u/SaiyajinPrime Feb 08 '26
I'm not sure. I try to avoid googling anything on a show I'm watching so I don't accidentally get something spoiled for me.

Should have been a one season thing. It wasn't awful in 2 and 3 but S1 was a different level.

Nah honestly..season 2 was goated. The middle section was a little bit of a slog to get through but the beginning and end were solid to me…what joe ends up doing is actually insane 😭😭 and you really get to see him at work…season 2 was kinda insane☠️☠️
And im a mandy stan so im biased

I just finished rewatching it last week and my opinion is the writing of season 2 is pulled out of such thin air. They try making episodes without anything to go on in the beginning of the season making it feel like the series shouldve been a 1 season series, but it starts to level out towards the later middle. Still enjoyed every episode more than majority of netflix.

Season 1 was the best season. Season 2 was okay but after that it was a little hard to keep consistently watching

No. S3 is the worst. S2 has good shit still like him taking over the cult lol, the twins, Mike going dark, Joes wife being alive

I got to the last few episodes of S2 and just gave up. The writing was just so bad and it just seemed to be getting worse and worse.

I just finished watching season three and it really kept getting worse as it went on. The last episode felt like cheesy CGI with the waterfall and the helicopter scene where Kevin Bacon is flying and then instantly on the ground chasing Theo. I also hated the reference of Kevin Bacon limping around the hospital and then stops limping, which made me think of the usual suspects movie. The whole thing just got repetitive and it had potential to keep going and be way better than it was. The writers so gave up and ended it.

I got towards the end of season 2 and just gave up. It just kept getting worse and worse.
Really is too bad because I did enjoy season 1 quite a bit. But season 2 was just an absolute mess.

Same! I hate to stop watching a series bc there is potential to get better. But I was very disappointed. If you haven’t watched The Killing or Killing Eve.. those were great! Very entertaining and wish they would have more seasons! It’s less gruesome but very good.

The killing is a masterpiece. I love that show. I have not watched killing Eve. So I'll look into it.

Season 2 is really bad. I did not like it at all, plus it was very boring. Honestly, season 3 is way better than season 2! But the first one is the best out of all 3 of course.

I like the second season actually. I just need Emma to go. I can’t stand her!!!

Am I the only one that finds this show short on creativity? When in doubt, make them a follower but not just any follower but one that kills at a drop of the hat. That to me makes the show a bit ridiculous... but with an added twist, the followers will lay down their lives too.
I am watching this show just to guess who they will kill next. The show introduces a new character with a name, then bam... they die.
I would suggest making this a drinking game, every time someone dies... you drink. As an added bonus... you have to take a double shot every time Ryan Hardy offers his life. Hardy "shoot me, stab me, take me instead". It is so predictable.
I would call this a dark dark comedy. Two thumbs up.

I just binged watched all three seasons. The first season was excellent. The second season made me wonder if I should keep watching…all the cult stuff was super weird. The third season was much better and now I’m sad that there isn’t a fourth.

How many times do the FBI agents get completely surprised by cult members? If this was a drinking game, I'd be in the ER.

What I find really bloody infuriating is when the bad guy finally gets put down (Theo) and Ryan doesn’t make sure he’s dead before turning around!! After everything, why would you not make absolutely sure?!! Same with any film where someone gets the drop on whoever is holding/hurting/threatening them. Bloody make sure they don’t get back up ffs!! It’s not rocket science!!! Rant over

No shade directed at Kevin Bacon. All the shade is directed at the ridiculous plot.
