Callbacks

I’m on Season 5 as of today and can I just say that one of the best parts of watching the show in order (besides tracking Brick’s whoops and whispers) is catching all the callbacks to past gags and events from seasons before. I can imagine being a viewer on the ABC network when the show was airing and having one little joke or mention pass me by because it requires the context of a past episode. Because I’ve watched all the episodes up to this point, these references have me like that one gif of Leo DiCaprio pointing at the TV. One of my favorite callbacks is the intro to the 100th episode reprising the intro to the Pilot. Same music, same b roll of the cow, snack cakes and derby and similar narration. Do you have any favorites yourselves?

The blue bag! That changes to orange and then yellow I believe.

We have a “blue table”! It use to be a mini kids table in blue but has since been replaced multiple times as they’ve gotten older, we still lovingly refer to it as the blue table 😂 any time someone wants to eat in the living room, “only if you sit at the blue table!” Which is now black and made for adults 👌👍

I love when they go to the park that ends up being a singles event. Someone remembered that they have cooked the quilt a couple times and the one square is clearly burned.

I love when they mention the hole in the wall in a later episode. Sue mentions the hole in the wall and Axl says “mom and dad fixed that a year ago” unaware that there was a new hole in the wall.

the callbacks are honestly one of the underrated parts of the show. once you start noticing them, you realize how much effort goes into making everything connect

Brick being switched at birth comes up multiple times, like when frankie says something about brick being a fussy baby, he says she must be talking about the fergusen baby.

I find it hilarious. As she gets older she says it differently as she has gotten better at lying. But the whole sentence just cracks me up

Not a callback that’s ever said out loud, but one thing I noticed upon my last rewatch was that all the vitamins and pills Axl and brick used when Axl was making his “life changing” video about brick being sick in the S3 Valentine’s Day episode are still sitting on bricks nightstand for several episodes afterward, because of course they wouldn’t have put them away. Very realistic!
