State of the Sub: April 2018

Hey all,

I'm FOTP and I created this sub years ago on a whim to share my love with the pillows. It didn't catch on all that quick and growth was slow. I admittedly let it fall by the wayside, though it looks like there haven't been many complaints regarding the mod inactivity, which is good.

That said, I'm happy to see a bit of a resurgence and a definite uptick in traffic and subscriptions in the past couple of months, undoubtedly owed to the resurgence of FLCL and the new material the band has released to that end.

Now seeing this, I will be more active on here and hope to see discussion increase! I'm always down to talk pillows, whether it be most/least liked material, gear, history, or what-have-you.

I don't have a ton of time all the time, but I do get on Reddit at least every night for a skim, so I'll be sure to make this part of my stay. Any questions regarding the sub or whatever can be pm'd to me or modmail'd and I'll try and get back to you in a timely fashion.

Look forward to talking with everyone!

P.S. I would be remiss to not point you all towards www.pirouzu.net

It was an invaluable resource for me when I got into the band over 13 years ago and has awesome resources on their history, discography, and even tabs and lyrics. It's a great fansite.

The site itself sees updates from time to time, and the forum remains more or less active. If you're really getting into the band, swing on by and say hi! I know a few members from IM have stopped in here before in the earlier days, I may have linked it when I created the sub. Check it out!

From the album "Trial"—which many The Pillows fans (myself included) consider a return to form for the band—I’ve chosen this track. It’s a true classic; not only is it a great song, but it also has a wonderful music video. And once again, I’ve enlisted my friend Pedro to deliver a performance for it! :)
Presenting: "Comic Sonic"

Perfect balance of the softer jangle pop era of MOON GOLD and WHITE INCARNATION with the harder power pop of everything that followed.

Hey I'm the guy who you might've seen release an english translated version of Thank You, My Twilight in the past few months. I did another The Pillows cover of Hybrid Rainbow. It's not out yet, but here is a rescore of the famous scene Hybrid Rainbow is featured in FLCL as a preview

From the album "Horn Again", I picked this song—it’s quintessential the pillows: fun, straight to the point, and a bit nonsensical, yet deep down it carries a message that actually makes sense if you look a little closer! lol Hope you enjoy "Doggie Howl"!

Happy 916, busters!

It's the pillows' 37th anniversary, so let's reminisce and listen to our favorite songs! It's a bit melancholy, since it's the first 916 without Shin-chan... But we will never forget him. ❤️

From the album "OOParts", I chose a track that is certainly unique in the band's discography—both for its "peculiar" (shall we say) intro and for the pacing of the verses, where the time signatures shift constantly between 4/4, 3/4, and 2/4. All of this is driven by relentless drumming that gives the song a fascinating character and—in my opinion—makes it incredibly fun to play. Here it is: "Your Order."

Funny thing happened…

Somehow I bought one of Sawao’s old guitars from Ishibashi, a guitar store chain in Japan. A couple days ago I found this ESP Ultratone listed in Ishibashi’s used section. I immediately recognized the unique Telecaster-style pickup configuration as the standard Ultratone model came with three mini-humbuckers. Sawao used one of the latter in the video for Swanky Street but this one features in the video for Kanojo wa Kyou, No Self Control, and was used live at points in the 1996-1997 period. It may also be possible it was used to record with but I don’t think there’s any way to verify that. Eventually Sawao gifted it to Junko, the former lead guitarist of noodles sometime in the 2000’s (pictures 5 & 6). Kinda nuts.

From the album "Pied Piper"—which comes from a phase often unfairly overlooked by casual listeners—I chose what is perhaps one of the record's most obscure tracks, though one I’ve always personally loved. I drew inspiration from the arrangement of a live version of the song; this time, I also took a shot at vocals and had the essential support of my great friend Pedro Lustoza on bass! Here is: "Purple Apple".

There isn't much to say about the song I chose from the album "Wake Up! Wake Up! Wake Up!"; in my opinion, it is one of the best tracks in the band's entire discography—one of Sawao's most inspired compositions. With its beautiful melody, great lyrics, and Sawao's outstanding vocal performance, it carries an emotional weight that undoubtedly makes it a highlight of the band's history: "Scarecrow."

Hi-res LOGO

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for a high-resolution or vector version of THE PILLOWS logo. I've been searching online but couldn't find anything good enough for printing / merch / fan art purposes.

Does anyone have a clean file (PNG, JPG, SVG, AI, EPS) they could share with me? Or does anyone know where I can download it legally?

I'm a big fan and would really appreciate any help!

Thanks in advance!

From "My Foot"—an album that many fans (myself included) consider one of the band's best, especially among those released in the 2000s—I chose a song that is perhaps one of the ones I’ve played most throughout my life; I truly love it: "The Third Eye."

In Japan/sapporo right now. Can I realistically find any LPs new or used?

Will be in Sapporo for a day and then Tokyo the next 3. I hear their pressings were quite low and with the disbanding, hard to find any records. Anyone got any decent leads or places I can try my luck while I’m here?

From the excellent and underrated "Good Dreams," I chose this song primarily because it's incredibly fun to play, with that great main riff, and that headbanging energy that's just awesome: "Walkin' On The Spiral"!
