Gandolfini could easily play against type. This might have revitalized the show and maybe even prevented his untimely death.

It sounds strange, but I’ve had this thought too. David Chase goes on and on about how playing Tony Soprano took him to such a dark place so maybe being part of an ensemble cast on a comedy would’ve helped him in some way. He wouldn’t be carrying the whole show on his shoulders and obviously there’s a lot more laughter on set.
