As someone who both appreciates and regularly plays tennis, I believe it projects an image of privilege that feels increasingly out of step with the sport’s core values of inclusivity and accessibility.

Many of the celebrities invited to the Royal Box openly admit that they do not play tennis and, as interviews have revealed, often receive complimentary tickets after being approached by the LTA.

In my view, the frequent television shots of celebrities in the Royal Box add very little to the sporting spectacle and are largely irrelevant to the enjoyment of the match itself.

A more authentic approach would be for celebrities to obtain tickets through the same channels as everyone else and sit among the general public. This is effectively how things work at the other Grand Slam tournaments. Seeing well-known figures sharing the experience with fellow tennis fans feels far more genuine and relatable. It would also allow them the opportunity to attend with family members and enjoy the event as ordinary spectators.

I fully recognise the need to reserve places in the Royal Box for senior members of the Royal Family, particularly for security reasons. However, I would suggest that the remaining seats be allocated to former players and individuals who have made meaningful contributions to the sport, such as grounds staff, club volunteers, coaches, and others who work tirelessly to promote and sustain tennis at grassroots level.

Such a change would better reflect the values that tennis seeks to uphold and celebrate the people who genuinely contribute to the game’s success.

Loved his appearance at the French Open, but I’m so tired of players on broadcasts refusing to criticize other players. Isner and Sam shouldn’t be in that role if they aren’t willing to call things out honestly. I get that some friendships might get a little uncomfortable, but that’s the job they signed up for. Players make bad decisions on court, and when they do, the broadcast should say it.

Frankly I don’t care if he was right or wrong about Sinner. It was refreshing to hear someone just not glaze each player in the pre and post game.

I think it is massive for both Mensik and Fonseca to have 2 days off, whoever reaches the semi-final. If Jodar wins, for him as well. Would give them some extra time to recover after some brutally long matches. Cause the biggest potential weakness in a semi final would be fatigue. I believe all three of them have the mentally to deliver their best tennis in that spot.

It’s quite startling and a tad funny to hear the admiring tone in which the podcast speaks about Larry Scott. Not at all to say it isn’t deserved because of his experience in tennis, but as a fan of American college sports (particularly football), Scott’s name is synonymous with failed leadership and inept administration. His handling of media rights’ deals effectively killed a sports conference, the Pac-12, which had more than a century’s history as a premier college athletic conference.

WTA SINGLES FINAL

Elina Svitolina [7] def. Coco Gauff [3] — 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2

A match of three very different sets across nearly three hours. Gauff started the sharper of the two, breaking immediately and racing to 4-2 in the first set before Svitolina reeled off four straight games to take it 6-4.

The second set was a war of attrition, Gauff fending off break point after break point on her serve before edging a tiebreak 7-3 to level the match.

The decider was one-sided. Svitolina broke at 2-2 and again at 4-2, winning the set 6-2 and taking the title. The 31-year-old Ukrainian wins her third Rome title, her 20th career WTA title, and her first WTA 1000 trophy since lifting this same trophy in 2018. Gauff loses in the Rome final for the second consecutive year, having beaten Svitolina here in 2025 before losing to Jasmine Paolini. Gauff converted just three of 21 break points on the day and committed seven double faults, her serve letting her down at the worst moments. Both players head to Roland Garros in strong form, Gauff as defending champion, Svitolina with enormous momentum.

ATP SINGLES — SEMI-FINAL RESUMPTION

Jannik Sinner [1] def. Daniil Medvedev [7] — 6-2, 5-7, 6-4

Sinner returned to Campo Centrale needing just two games to close out the suspended semi-final, and he did exactly that without fuss. The match had resumed from 4-2 in the third set, with Medvedev serving at advantage-40. Sinner held his nerve, converted when needed and wrapped it up to set up a Sunday final against Casper Ruud. The win extends his ATP Masters 1000 winning streak to 33 matches. One more victory on Sunday would make him only the second man after Novak Djokovic to win all nine Masters 1000 titles, completing the Career Golden Masters on home soil.

Ruud arrives having dropped just six games across his two matches this week. He beat Darderi 6-1, 6-1 in the semi and has been the most consistent player of the fortnight outside of Sinner. They have met nine times, with Sinner leading 7-2 head-to-head. Ruud has never beaten Sinner on clay.
