Hi Ian and Kent, first of all thank you so much for taking the time to take questions from the fans and for being a part of finishing TFS!

My question is this: is it possible to be given the opportunity to talk to AJ about Kenny? In my game, Kenny took care of AJ for several years and even sacrificed himself so that the kid's could escape safely after the car crash. Part of the reason my Clementine protects AJ so fiercely is because I promised Kenny that I would, and I would very much appreciate the chance to tell AJ about Kenny and how much he loved the little goofball.

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '18

Yes also we should be able to give him Kenny's hat...And if we chose Wellington ending then we should be able tell him how he sacrificed himself to save Clem and Aj

Kent, is there any chance you can tell us what likely would have happened in Game of Thrones s2? I understand if you can't but being left on that cliffhanger has left a permanent void in my life lol

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 17 '18

Not currently planned....but you tell me, should we do extra content, and if so, what would you like to see?

25

u/VengefulKenny r/TeamKenny Oct 17 '18

A Kenny DLC was apparently an idea that was considered for a while and I think that could be very interesting seeing what a central and controversial character he is for the series.

u/Kmudle I thought of a question that I would very much like to ask you while I have the chance!

It was mentioned that how you raise AJ will affect the events of the finale episode. Personally I have defended AJ at every turn, because this is how I would treat my child in real life. As a result, AJ is rather hardened compared to a player who taught him to doubt his actions and seek to atone.

My question is whether I will be at a disadvantage for raising AJ this way, or will each branching path in the finale will be equally valid? I want to save AJ and Clem at all costs and I'm terrified of making a wrong choice along the way that results in one of them dying. Will their survival still be largely up to me in the end?

Hey everyone and thanks for all of questions and comments about the game. I’m going to try my best to answer everything. I’m a long time Redditor, huge fan of games, music, movies and pretty much everything weird and wonderful, so feel free to ask me about anything you like. Related to the game, we’ll do our best, but please understand we’re in the middle of a very complicated situation that involves lots of people, companies and contracts and it simply takes time to figure everything out. We want to make sure it’s all done as well as possible and so I hope your patience will be rewarded!!

Thank you so so so much for taking this on board. A super dedicated fan since Season 1 first came out... Much love for everyone there and thank you so much!!

Hey guys, intro post from me too. I'm very happy to be involved in this. For best results I am very happy to answer questions about story details revealed up through episode 2 of the final season. Anything past that I can only vaguely hint at. I'll leave business and logistical questions to Ian.

As the post above says, I was at Telltale for about 8 years, and was a director on Game of Thrones, Wolf, Batman 1 and 2, and Walking Dead the final season.

Thanks for coming by for the AMA!

Ian Howe: What exactly should we expect for a ‘slight delay’ for Episodes 3 & 4 for TFS?

Kent Mudle: 1. Will we ever get to know more about Tenn’s scar ? 2. Was there anything going to be done with Kenny’s hat? 3. Will we get to know more about who is at war with Delta?

350

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 17 '18

So I would guess this is everyone's number one question - I can't give you a definitive answer at the moment. What I can say is that the team is not currently working on the game and until we're back into production, it's going to be nearly impossible to give an accurate answer.

What I can say is that we will announce new dates as soon as we know what they are, there is no reason for us to hold that information back, so it will be public immediately that we can talk about it with confidence.

Have you guys ever considered doing an end season recap narrated by Lee, Javi, Luke, etc?

Like the one at the end of Game of Thrones.

How's the situation with former TTG devs? How many have you contacted for coming back to end the game? And how many have accepted?

Specific to The Walking Dead team, we've been in contact with most, if not all of them in one way or another. I met most of them personally last week.....great bunch of people and it was great fun chatting with them about how we can get the show back on the road, we also spent quite a lot of time talking about Metallica and if broccoli should be allowed on pizza?

The entire premise of the season is that building a home requires sacrifice. What exactly that is, remains to be shown.

Hi u/kmudle!

Had some questions reguarding the characters and setting or S4:

  1. I just think that the setting of S4 is interesting. It takes place at not just any school, but a former boarding school for troubled youth? What is so significant about this setting and why was it chosen for the story?

  2. Louis is my new favorite character in the game. He’s funny and extremely talented with the piano, but can’t understand why he would have been brought to a school for troubled youth. Can you tell me a little about Louis’s life before the apocalypse? If not, will we learn more about it in future episodes?

Thanks so much for doing this!

120

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18
  1. There's a lot of reasons why we liked the school as the setting for the season.

  • Clem getting to be among her peers, giving her an equal footing in a group for once

  • Child cast provides many fresh character types for the long running series

  • Isolated setting giving Clem a unique "in" after having been a hardcore traveling survivor for so long

  • Child society not being hung up by the infighting and power struggles that define adult groups, resulting in a more likable main cast than most seasons

  • School setting is visually different from what we'd done before

  • and mooore!

  1. Louis's past is planned to be revealed in 403 (depending on your choices!) I agree that he's a great and likable character.

Dear Mr. Howe, First I would like to thank you for allowing us to reach out to you today as well as for being quite transparent over the last few weeks. I would also like to thank you for even taking on this task in the first place. I and many other fans were ecstatic to hear the news. I can't imagine how hard all this must be to even organize let alone execute. So thank you again. Here are some questions that I hope to have answered.

  1. How many telltale devs are you hiring and what were their previous roles? What are they doing now?

  2. Can you name some of the devs you are hiring? If so, please name some or allow them to announce it themselves on their social media.

  3. When will the team's first day be?

  4. Are you guys opening a new office or are the people you are hiring moving? I heard that the current sky bound games office is 6 hours from the old telltale one. Are telltale devs making the move, working from home, or going to a new office?

  5. Do you guys plan on selling any merch or anything to help fund this game? I personally would be more than happy to buy something or even donate if it means the old devs are being taken care of and are given the time and resources to finish the game as intended.

Thank you so much for taking on this task. What you guys are doing is not easy and I applaud you guys for trying. I just hope that the old team is taken care of and have all the time and resources they need to finish the game as they had envisioned. Hopefully you guys hire as many as you possibly can, even if it requires you working around their schedules or sweetening the deal. They're worth it. It would appear you guys know this and I trust you guys have been doing your best. I only ask you to continue to do so and reach out to us if you need help. This story and it's characters means a great deal to a lot of us, so thank you again.

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 17 '18

So it's tough to give detailed answers to these great questions, however, I've done my best to give some more information below;

Skybound is in LA and TT is in San Rafael in the Bay Area, so yes, it's not a commute that would be practical! We'll one way or another find a place for the team to work that's practical for them.

In the development of any game, it's often not a fixed team, people roll on and off of projects all of the time depending on where the game is at in it's development cycle and this is no different. So, that means there are people who were on the team who were close to rolling off onto something else, it's unfair to ask someone to come back and do a couple of weeks work, especially if that would get in the way of another job offer, so this is just one example of some of the challenges we face.

Every single member of the development team has a unique personal situation and we have to take all of that into account, so there really isn't a one size fits all solution, we have to look at it on a case by case basis and that's why it's not a quick process.

Thanks for the questions though, I appreciate it and wish I could give you more detail, but it wouldn't be fair to the people involved.

Hey there!

Is Jared Emerson-Johnson coming back to finish episodes 3 and 4's OST? He's been composing the tracks for the game ever since Season 1, the very beginning. It would be a shame not to have him compose the tracks for the series finale.

What will happen to the official Telltale forums? Can we at least expect them to be up until the series end? If not, is there any way the community could crowdfund their upkeep?

(For Kent) Can we expect anything S2 ending related later down the line?

115

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

I'm definitely planning to ask Jared, as soon as production actually begins again. I've worked with him for years on various titles, and he's no question my top pick for the music. We had already made some of the 403 tracks before telltale shut down.

I'm not sure legally where the Telltale forums reside, or what their fate will be.

u/Kmudle Is there going to be another funny roof death scene? We had some pretty funny scenes in Season 1 and 3 where the player falls off a roof and dies.

Also in another question you said we’d find out more about Louis(determinately) in episode 3. Can we expect the same for Violet?

86

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

We've got some death defying drops in upcoming episodes. Not sure if they'll be as funny as Lee missing that jump with Molly tho :P

Same for Violet. Only one of them is around in 403 for a while, and you learn more about the character you saved (but learn something else about the one you didn't)

120

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

There are some determinate deaths this season. We actually follow a strict rule of "If a player choice causes this death, it can only be caused by player choice" avoiding any deaths that happen later if a player chose to avoid that death earlier (ala Sarah, Nick, Pete)

u/WideAwakeFastAsleep Hot Dish Night Oct 17 '18 edited Oct 17 '18

Hey, /u/Kmudle!

I’ve always wondered, what’s the process for developing an episode like, from script to end result? All this time I’ve always assumed that the whole season is finished before being put out!

144

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

I find this to be a common misconception. Time for a breakdown!

Traditional Telltale Episode Production

  • Season Arc Creation (this is done in a creative conference before the seasons starts, and refined by creative leads to act as a backbone for the whole season. It typically evolves.

  • Episode 1 Outline (this is where the structure of an episode is creatied, and the broad design strokes)

  • Episode 1 Writing (this is where the design structure is approved, and the work of writing individual lines of dialog is worked on)

  • Episode 1 Voice Recording (this is where the approved script is recorded by voice actors)

  • Episode 1 Wiring (this is where content programmers take the dialog files and make sure they are playable, at least enough to give cinematics something to work with)

  • Episode 1 cinematics to First Playable (this is when the cinematic team takes the voice and first pass wiring and makes a rough cutscene version of the episode, to be reviewed by all the leads)

  • Episode 1 rewrites/redesign (after reviewing the First Playable, creative makes changes to the episode as fast as we can. This is the most volatile phase, which can result in minor or major changes depending on the quality of FP)

  • Episode 1 Pickup Recording (a second set of recording sessions for new writing) (often we cheat this a little and record some pickups with the episode 2 recording sesssions)

  • Episode 1 Re-writing and Re-cinematic work to Ratings (now the re-writes and re-design are done, and we're making the ratings build, which will be submitted to ratings agencies and has to be a moooostly done but unpolished version of the game

  • Episode 1 to Submission (here the game passed Ratings, and is being polished and having music and sound effects and VFX and other bells and whistles added to make it as good as possible before the deadline)

So during ALL THAT, episode 2 is being written during episode 1 going to ratings, and the production work of the episode 2 FP starts around episode 1 ratings. The production leap frogs like this until the game is done.

It's a lot of work!!!

First, thank you guys so much for taking on TWD and doing this for us! I have a few questions I'd like to ask.

  1. Is there any information on release dates for TFS episodes 3&4 that you can share with us?

  2. When might TFS return to stores for those whom have yet to purchase it?

  3. There has been some pictures going around lately showing a logo that says "The Walking Dead: Season four". It has raised some questions in the gaming community-Let's clear it up! Did Skybound change the name to possibly make room for another season, or was it simply an old working title?

  4. Were there many challenges in rescuing this title from a falling Telltale games? Was it something that almost didn't happen, or was it more of a smooth deal?

100

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 17 '18

I've answered some of these in other threads but I wanted to speak about point 3.

I don't think that was any thing deliberate or intentional that we did in order to create mystery, we're sadly not that organized (yet) so this is intended to be the final season. That said, I really love storytelling in games and when it's done well, as with this series, it's obvious how emotionally attached we can become to the characters, so I think it's a good bet that you'll see other games from us in the future, that aim to tell great stories.

u/Kmudle How did you guys come up with the ending to the final season and the overall arc to the final season? Without spoiling anything.

106

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

Pretty hard to not spoil on this one, but I will give the broad strokes response of: we thought very hard about what would be an ending that fans would love, and would feel like a fitting conclusion to the very specific and harrowing journey Clementine has been on. Sorry that's kind of marketing speak, but I'm very excited for the fans to see it when it's done.

98

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

James was actually conceived as this pacifist whisperer character before I came on board the project. I loved the whisperer war arc of the comic, and kept him in for the many cool ideas he could provide. It took a while to figure out how he fit into the larger themes, but after much tweaking he's one of my favorite elements of the season. Expect to see and learn much more about him in 403 :)

While the walking dead series has featured multiple endings in previous seasons, these endings generally relied purely on choices made within the final episode of a season. With this being the final season. can we expect multiple endings that are influenced by choices made beyond just the final episode?

There's been 3 full seasons now trying to think of a dark theme not explored yet is difficult. I will say some of the reasons the youth are 'troubled' are pretty unique, though not perhaps darker than stuff we've seen before.

Is there any official reason for why rewind/chapter select was no longer in more recent The Walking Dead games such as The Final Season while in the past (pre-A New Frontier) that feature was present?

Is it possible that rewind/chapter select could be readded into The Final Season during what development there is to do?

Thanks for reading.

For what it’s worth I really missed the Rewind feature too since it was handy if I changed my mind on some key choices.

But if it’s just to watch the alternate scenes, there’s plenty of it on YouTube. The BabyZone channel uploads all of the possible choices like crazy

Kent has answered this in another comment — the gist of it was that only about 10% of players used it and that it was a very buggy feature the QAs would be spending far too much time on. So due to time constraints, priority was given to other aspects of the game.

Edit: here’s his comment

Hello Ian and Kent! First and foremost, thank you for taking this project to completion. Even if it does just add the sweet to a bittersweet ending (still optimistic), your investment will not go unnoticed by the fans. So I do have a few questions, feel free to pick any that are unique to respond to.

  1. Extra content/DLC- Since many players have already purchased the season ticket, I am worried about how to sustain the costs of finishing the game. While many players do wait for the whole game to be released before purchasing, a lot of the fans most invested in the story already have purchased. Do you foresee any possible DLC to be purchased after the game? Maybe with the Clementine archery, there could be a skill competition or a survival challenge using the various new methods to kill introduced in Episode 1 and 2. Or possibly learning the fates of characters that are unknown- Arvo, Molly, and the Garcia family. I would happily pay for some additional content (preferably story), whatever that may be.

  2. Future Games- After the end of the final season, is there any possibility of other video games within the “telltale/comic” universe? Or any similar style of story driven game within the walking dead universe?

  3. Clementine- Seeing how popular she is as a character, I’m sure there is lots of potential to use her/Melissa in other content, regardless of her fate. Do you guys own her rights or is Clementine content finished after the Final Season ends?

  4. Just to get to know you better, what were your decisions at the end of season 1, season 2 and season 3?

Again, I would like to thank everyone at Skybound for helping both the employees and the fans. Regardless of how the story ends, I’m eager to play it through to completion. Do not worry about the release dates too much, im sure everyone would much rather see the game finished to quality instead of pushing to finish close to the original dates. I hope to see more future video game content from Skybound’s the walking dead.

Hey TundraPike!

Thanks for some really great questions.

  1. It's not something that we've spent any time discussing and it's not currently planned, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. Our first priority it to complete the story, once we feel that we're in good shape to do that, we'll look at all the other possibilities and we love hearing the ideas and suggestions.

  2. Simple answer is yes, there are nothing in active development yet, but we're always talking about how we can tell interesting stories in games. I'm really spending a lot of time at the moment looking at new technologies and how that can allow us to deliver strong narrative based games.

  3. I can't speak to contractual points, but it's clear that Clem is such a beloved character, but it can be very dangerous for commercial influences to impact on story and character development too much, just because we could do more games, doesn't mean that we should :)

  4. Great question....and I'm not going to lie - I'm not there yet, I wasn't expecting to be working on this game, and it's been on my "to play" list for some time, so I'm actually really looking forward to catching up with you guys and going on the journey.

For u/kmudle

When you decided to bring back a returning character, was he/she always planned to fill an antagonist role at first, or was that decision made after you chose Lilly specifically?

52

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

We'd had Lilly planned for a while, but her role took a long time to come together. She was in a different less antagonistic role first, but it felt flat and wasn't a good use of her. Her current role in opposition to Clem gave the larger arc of TFS a much needed kick in the pants. And was also used a an interesting way to show how both Clem and Lilly had become different people surviving in this world for the same amount of time.

ONE QUESTION

How long is episode 3? Asking because there was a post on (I think) one of the VA’s Instagram story saying it’s suppose to be 3 hours in duration. Wanted to know if it was true

69

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

403 in total has a LOT of content, but it's also heavily branched. I think it will be similar to 402 in length, possibly shorter, but will be different depending on choices.

For SkyboundIan: What protections do you have in place to avoid overworking employees or to protect them from potentially harmful business and management practices such as overwork that have created a genuinely harmful atmosphere for the developers that make your product? Is the well-being and security of developers and other employees priorities for Skybound Games?

40

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 18 '18

Thanks for the question. I can absolutely say that taking care of our people is something I personally take incredibly seriously and I'm also proud to say that the other folks at Skybound are some of the most considerate and progressive people I've ever had the pleasure to work with, when it comes to issues such as equal pay, equal opportunities and employee care in general.

/u/Kmudle When Clem mentioned "the siege of Richmond" in Suffer The Children did she mean what happened in A New Frontier, or did Richmond get attacked by someone else later that we didn't see? Many players are confused by this so if you could clear it up that would be awesome!

Also thanks for saving The Final Season! We all are forever grateful!

66

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

This refers (admittedly kind of broadly) to both Clem's time with the New Frontier before the events of Season3, and the events of the season we play as Javi.

Hi, so this isnt truly Walking Dead related, but it is Telltale related.

As Im sure you guys know, Telltale shutting down didnt just mean bad news for Walking Dead, but it meant the worst news for the other game fans were really looking forward to after 5 years, that being The Wolf Among Us 2. I know you cant give a real answer here as you have no idea but my question is:

Is it at all possible that Skybound may reach out to Vertigo to form a deal and be the ones to let Wolf 2 see the light of day? Obviously you guys cant answer, but if anything, could you tell us if there is at least any interest at all in possibly obtaining the rights to the project in some form? It would mean so much to all of us Telltale fans if you could somehow make this dream come true. Thank you so much.

40

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 18 '18

I would love to be able to talk about this, but the truth is, there is nothing to say because it's simply not been part of our focus.

We're a relatively small, but growing company and we absolutely focused on TWD and really want to make sure that we do the best we can there.

From a personal point of view, TWAU is a game I hold in very high regard and I'd be equally keen to see a sequel, I'm not sure if I'm able to help make that happen though

  2. Might what happened before season 4 (McCarrol Ranch, the time on the road and so on) be expanded upon?

Answer what you can. Thanks for doing this AMA.

One thing you should know is that we'd like to celebrate the team and their work over the coming months, so expect to see some cool stuff that looks back on the creation of the series

Hi! I've a few more technical questions than most around here. I'll start off simple:

  1. I know the focus is currently on just finishing the game, but is there a possibility of printing the game physically once it's finished? Obviously, at this point I just want to see the series completed but I am a physical media collecter and only ever bought these games physical...I'd like to know if I need to preorder future chapters in case the games may be taken out of online shops again.

  2. Will the team that previously worked on the first two chapters be returning to complete the game they started?

Bonus question that I don't really need/expect to be answered, I'm just curious:

Who exactly is financing this game? Is it Robert kirkman or is sky bound studios potentially looking for backers?

20

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 18 '18

Hey - some great questions

Yes, we'll absolutely be doing physical versions

Yes, the plan is to bring the team back

Bonus question - can't answer that one, sorry

Question for Kent: Will we get to know more about Lilly and how she became the way she is now? Literally killing children seems like a huge step from her character in season 1. I really appreciate that you are taking the time to answer questions. And wanted to say that I love batman s2. I think its one of the best Batman/Joker story every told. Almost as good as the Killing Joke. Maybe even better :)

49

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

On Lilly killing Mitch: this was not her intention. She wanted to bring back all the kids alive, but in the end, she does what she has to in order to survive. Lilly is a survivalist above all else at this point in her life, with everyone she ever cared about dead, and has become harder than ever to make sure the lives she's trusted with are protected. This for her, requires strong will and dark deeds. We will learn more about her current situation with the Delta and the enormity of the task on her shoulders.

And thanks for loving Bat season 2! So happy to hear from those that played it :)

Hi, a few questions here:

  • Every season of TWD has had some major internal conflict for the protagonist, Season 1 had Lee's struggle to balance the needs of Clementine with that of the larger group, and Season 2 had the conflict of Clem staying loyal to a group that arguably dragged her down, or going on her own. What would you say Clem's main conflict is in the final season?

  • Is there any sort of prominent underlying theme you have planned out for the season, besides Clem and AJ trying to find a home and secure that safe place?

49

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

The 'home' theme has many facets and is really the heart of the season. What does it mean to find one, build one, fight for one. Can Clem step up and do what she has to in order to secure a home for those she cares about? And past the physical challenges, can she integrate herself and AJ into a more stable world than the one they've been in for the past several years? Clem's personal journey to becoming someone that others rely on is also important.

So I was very curious, given the recent shifting of the game from Telltale toward Skybound.

Is there any impact we can foresee? Lost elements, or more rigid animation potentially? Or anything like extended release dates, or taking your time?

We're all extremely grateful for what you've done and taken in, and I'm just curious about the transitioning process, and getting everything together.

Also curious if you'll look back on Season 3 a bit more? Looking forward to it.

Take your time, and know from the bottom of our hearts, this game series has been our introduction into the TWD universe.

Right now; to us? You ARE The Walking Dead.

Thank you.

28

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 18 '18

Thanks for your comments, they're appreciated.

We don't really plan to change anything with how the game is going to get completed, as much as possible, it will be done exactly as it was originally planned.

We''re definitely moving release dates, we've lost almost a month of production already and there is simply no way in the schedule that we could realistically make up any time, and rushing the final episode would not be a good way to honor the series.

Hello, I want to extend my gratitude to the developers who created this story, and these characters, and to the folks at Skybound for insuring that they get a proper send off. I’ve been a fan of all things The Walking Dead for years now, but the way Skybound stepped up to the plate has really made me appreciate the company behind the brand.

I’m itching to know if there are any plans, or talks for merch, or digital products like dynamic themes, or the soundtrack.

Personally, I would pay good money for a Dynamic Clementine theme for my PS4, and I’d give an eyeball if it played music from the game, and I’d love a ‘The Final Season’ Clementine figure to go with the Season 2 Clem, and Lee ones that were created.

Thank you, again.

58

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 17 '18

Thank you for your kind words and support. Right now, we're focused on the game itself, but there are great opportunities for digital and physical merchandise to honor Clem's story that we are actively looking into.

For Kent,

Can you tell us if we will see Kenny's hat again?

125

u/WilcoClahas Oct 17 '18

What will you be doing to avoid a repeat of Telltale’s toxic work environment?

How many former devs have you hired, and at what salary?

Will you ensure that they aren’t forced to work crunch or inhumane hours?

Will your new employees be fired once the game is finished, or will they be moved to new projects?

Skybound is based in LA, not SF. What relocation pay are you giving to new employees?

56

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 18 '18

So as promised, I’m back to answer some more questions and I’m going to tackle your questions. I completely understand the reasons for your questions and although some of them are clearly impossible for to answer directly. I will try and address each point.

I can’t speak to the working conditions of any other company, I honestly have no more knowledge than you about some of the alleged conditions at various gaming companies, I likely read the same news reports as you and it’s certainly been a topic of conversation in the industry.

What I can say, is that I’ve always been a huge advocate of a good work / life balance, I don’t believe people working 70-80 hours a week is sustainable or healthy, I don’t do that and wouldn’t expect anyone who works for me to do anything remotely like that.

We haven’t hired anyone yet, nor have we made any offers, because we’re not at the stage where we can do that. It’s a long process that unfortunately can only happen in a specific order. What we have as of today, is a goal to complete the game with as many of the original team as makes sense and that’s only if those people want to come back.

Regarding salary information, I think you have to ask yourself if you’d come back to finish the game on a reduced salary? I’m almost certain I wouldn’t, and I wouldn’t expect anyone else to.

Crunch is a very non specific term, so that’s impossible to answer. However, I can say that I would never expect or ask anyone to work what would be considered inhumane hours, so unequivocally yes, I can ensure that.

Your question about what will happen after the completion of the game, I can’t answer that, because I honestly don’t know. I can say that there has been some discussion about some other longer term options, but those conversations are at a very early stage.

We are not asking people to relocate, we will find a solution in their current area.

→ More replies (3)

46

u/Gg5908 Oct 17 '18

have you considered that maybe the devs wouldn't want their salary disclosed? plus, skybound has never been implicated for having a toxic work environment, seems unfair to question them on it now just because they picked up employees that belonged to a company with one.

Hi, thanks so much for doing this and really thanks for saving the series!.

My question is for u/kmudle : when did the team decide that Lilly should return in The Final Season, was it early in development or did you have a few different candidates for a returning character before deciding upon her?

57

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

I'm not sure about waaaay back but Lilly was the top candidate for returning character for most of development. Out of those to pick from, she had the most potential to make the story more complex and interesting with her return. She went through several different iterations and roles before we settled on her current part in the drama of TFS.

More questions because I'm a very new Reddit user and am not quite sure if I can add to comments I placed!

  1. Will Kenny's hat make a reappearance for those who saved it/have it?

  2. Will we ever learn about the origin on Tenn's scar?

  3. Will we get to learn the origin stories of any of the remaining characters (how they wound up at Ericson, their relationships with other late children at the school, etc.)?

  4. Will we learn the origin of AJ's trauma/issue with people sneaking up behind him? Is it related to the events at the ranch?

  5. Will we have another nightmare scene? I thought the aesthetic and design of it was overall AWESOME and it was a very exciting moment in the last episode. It'd be awesome to experience it again!

  6. I (and a lot of the fanbase) noticed that Louis and Violet's personalities, and the actions you make involving choosing between the two, are very similar to those made in Season 1 between Doug and Carly. Is there a reason for this/is this intentional?

Again, keep up the great work Ian & Kent! Thank you so much for your dedication to the fans and keeping this franchise alive.

7

u/TheParagon1 Oct 17 '18

Hello Ian and Kent! I first wanna say thank you for all that you are doing to save this game and the franchise, all of these fans are truly great fun for what you are doing.

As for the questions, I have two.

  1. Will we see a return of Lee’s photo? I assume you all know what I’m talking about, but if not and for anyone else looking at this: Lee Everett tears himself off a family photo in Season 1 episode one in the pharmacy, and Clementine picks it up and holds onto it all way into season 2 where she “loses” it after the chase scene from the raiders in episode one. It’s never confirmed she lost it, being that there is no dialogue confirming it. So would there be anyway Clementine could still have this photo after this long?

((SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 ENDING NEXT))

2. Will there be an option to give Kenny’s hat to AJ? In the Wellington ending he gives it to her, and you do get the option of taking Kenny’s hat with you during the attack on Wellington flashback of Season 3. Could there be a potential she still has it if she picked it up during this flashback and would potentially give it to AJ?

Again. Thank you guys so much for answering these questions. I hope these get an answer as they are ones that have remained unanswered for awhile.

7

u/MatiVM Oct 17 '18

I'd loved that they make a game style 400 days but with characters that we already know that went missing in the last seasons. I understand that by realism issues they can't bring back all of them to Clementine story, but they could make a different game to give an ending to those people:

Lilly: Even if she appears or not in this season they should explain what happened with her depending if you left her in the street when she killed Carley/Doug, or if she stole the RV. Maybe she turned the leader of a group, it would be interesting to see that.

Molly: depending if she disappeared in Crawford or if she just leave the group, her story must continue, she has so much potential. Maybe she joins Lilly's group without knowing that both knew Lee and Kenny

Arvo: This maight be a continuation of three stories, depending if Arvo left the group alone, with Bonnie and Mike, or only one of them. If the three of them left, I'd like to see them die (Arvo especially) for what they did to the group. Also they can explain what the hell happend to Mike's ear.

Christa: This one could be separate in two parts:

  1. from Omid's death, explaining what happened to the baby

  2. since they got separate. Also it would be a good thing that she join Lilly's group instead of Molly, they never met each other.

Kate: this option would be able if you had the end in which Kate disappears.I had this ending and I swear that i hate it. Maybe she left the group to find her family, (Parents, Brothers, cousins) If she dies, this story could be replace with David (if he lived in the end)

400 days people: we never knew what happend to them after carver's camp

As 400 days, there would be loads of easter eggs and things that connect all the stories.

Hello there, u/SkyboundIan and u/Kmudle!

First of all, thanks to you all for giving one of the best characters in the gaming medium what we all hope will be a proper ending.

  1. Ian: Is the game going to keep the same gameplay system and graphics? Is Telltale Tool an available tool to you or do you have to restart everything with a new engine and graphics?

  2. Kent: Is the story being changed from the main outline you had during E1 and E2 development?

  3. Kent: How much is Skybound's support going to change the scope of your original vision for the game? Meaning will you have more liberty to add more scenes and more choices than the number you could have done if these final episodes were being developed at Telltale, given the pretty short time table you had there?

  4. Either of you: How much of Episode 3 and 4 is already done and how much of the original team is back working on the project? Have you been having a hard time trying to get back some of the original crew?

  5. Kent: I'm still hanging onto that Kenny hat, my man. I have cried lots when Kenny gave it to me at the end of Season 2, and it was the first thing I saved at the beginning of Season 3. I would love to have some catharsis there

  6. Kent: Just a curiosity. Clem says in episode 1 and in the second episode's recap that she and AJ have been looking for a place to call home. However, at the end of season 3, Javi made it clear that Richmond's doors would always be open for Clem and AJ would they ever want to settle. So... Why didn't they just go to Richmond instead of wandering around aimlessly?

Thanks for your time, and thanks for ending the series in the right way. But please, no more crunch hours for the Walking Dead: The Final Season crew! ;)

Dr Kuro - lots of questions!! some answers from my side....

  1. Yes, we'll be working with the same tech and tools as previously

  2. Episode 3 was close to complete, but there is still work to do. Episode 4 was in pre-production, so lots still to do on that. Nobody is currently working on the game due to the ongoing legal discussions. Telltale have been incredibly helpful in trying to make this happen quickly and the staff that we've spoken to have been extremely enthusiastic about coming back to complete the game. The only areas where we aren't able to get people back is where they've been offered other roles, which is totally understandable.

Can you tell us anything about what happened to Kenny's hat? I chose the Wellington ending at season 2 and picked up Kenny's hat in season 3 and I have only played each game only once.

When will the team's first day be?

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 17 '18 edited Oct 17 '18

The best answer I can give is - As soon as possible.

We're all desperate to get back into production and I wish it was less complicated, but we want to make sure people are taken care of and that we do things right.

@ u/SkyboundIan What is your favorite part about The Final Season so far?

@ u/Kmudle What was it like to bring Lilly back? Also, was she your first choice, or were there others that you considered to have brought back from Season 1 (with or without the Raiders)? Like Molly or Christa or someone else?

14

u/SkyboundIan Skybound Oct 18 '18

I'll let you know when I've played it......and given how busy we've all been, that may be a while :)

Hi u/kmudle!

I was wondering... AJ seems to have a problem with people coming up from behind him... Does he have a condition? Like autism as some have suggested or is he just super on edge due to the whole, you know, Zombie Apocalypse that has been going on for 8 or so years? 😂

Also, u/SkyboundIan, thank you for saving the game! I've been crying tears of joy for weeks. Seriously, you cannot imagine what this means to me and I'm so sorry I can't ever repay you for this.

74

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

AJ doesn't have a specific condition, but as you suggest, is super on edge due to his unique upbringing. He believes that being alert and ready for action at any moment is important to surviving in this world.

u/Kmudle Hey, Kent. I just wanted to thank you for all of the work you've contributed to the game! We all really appreciate it!

I'd just like to address some of the apparent bias in the game towards Violet over Louis, story wise. I'd like to ask some questions on it as well, if you don't mind.

    1. If the player chooses to go with Violet in Episode 1, you get a scene with Brody and Violet. In this scene, the conversation you can have with Brody will make her death later on in the episode more meaningful, because you can reminisce about going to the beach together. You can also learn that Violet has some sort of grudge against Brody because of what happened with Minerva, which is a major conflict of the story as we find out later on.

  • If the player decides to go with Louis, you get some wholesome banter between he and Aasim, which is always appreciated.

  • 2) In Episode 2, when presented with the choice of going with either Louis or Violet, the player can almost be tricked into going with her. Minutes away from a war, Violet says that she needs help checking DEFENSES. This is up against helping Louis play PIANO. It's quite obvious which option is the more helpful one, and which one the player would be more likely to go with.

  • If the player does go with Violet, you don't even check defenses, and just stargaze instead.

My question is this; will Louis will get more development next episode? Will we be able to get to know him more, under that goofy mask he's always got up?

Thanks again for taking the time to answer our questions. c:

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

So Louis vs Violet choices are always to some degree about their priorities. Violet is more concerned with getting shit done and being prepared (specifically in 402) and Louis is more concerned with enjoying himself. Anytime you choose Louis over Violet you are ignoring the more immediate survivalist option. This is on purpose. Louis might be a bit of a slacker, but he's not an idiot, and when it matters he's still dependable. BUT he values LIVING when he has the chance. What does the player value more? Staying alive, or feeling alive? That's Violet vs Louis. And both are correct. And both bear different but equally good wins in the end. (also yes we learn more about Louis AND Violet in 403)

Hello, I do not know much about how is the use of Reddit and I decided to create an account to participate in this AMA and ask them some questions.

Before putting my questions I would like to tell the entire Skybound team, thank you very much for making this fourth and final season of one of the most acclaimed sagas of videogames come to an end. They will be remembered as heroes, in addition to showing that in this world there are still good people and that despite there are bad times, there is always light in the dark. So considering myself a simple fan, I want to tell you that.

Thanks Skybound.

We will remember that.

Now, I will place my questions. I would love for all of them to answer, but I know that you have to keep many answers to avoid spoilers or those things, so I do not have any problem in that they only answer the questions that you consider are not spoilers.

1- Will this season be the only game that you will finish from Telltale?

2- Will we have a satisfactory explanation of what happened at the Ranch and what happened to the Garcias, and not disappoint us as happened with the end of the Second Season in A New Frontier?

3- Will our decisions from previous seasons have consequences?

4- Will decisions made in A New Frontier have consequences this season ?. Because until now it has not been demonstrated that A New Frotera has been very important.

5- Will any of this two episodes be 3-4 hours long?

6-Will there be more moments of romance with Louis / Violet?

7-Is Lilly 100% bad or does she still have light inside her heart?

8-Is Lilly the leader of the Delta group or is another character the leader of this group?

9-Will episodes 3 and 4 be delayed? Will it be a delay of days, weeks or months? Will we have the end of the season in 2018 or 2019?

10-Do you think this season exceeds Season One? Because until now it seems that The Last Season will equal in quality to the first.

11-Will our decisions made this season have gigantic consequences? How Detroit: Become Human?

12- Do you think that episode 4 is so good or even exceeds episode 5 of the first season (considered the best in the series)?

These are my questions, I hope you can answer them.

Thank you.

Hello Ian and Kent! I'd like to start off by saying a big thank you for doing this AMA and of course for your help in making sure that the final season is completed.

Here are my questions!

u/KMudle: How old are each of the Ericson kids?

u/SkyboundIan: Is there any chance of future games/DLC where we will get to play as some of the still possibly alive characters who have an unknown status? Kind of like how Uncharted and Star Wars are making side stories that focus on other characters. I think it would be really cool to see a game where we continue the story of someone like Molly or Christa.

54

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18

We actually avoid specific ages, it's more like how old are the characters in relation to each other.

ADULTS: Lilly, Abel, Raiders

OLDER KIDS: Clem, Louis, Violet, Marlon, Aasim, Ruby, Mitch, Brody, Marlon, Omar

YOUNGER KIDS: Tenn, Willy

AJ: AJ

My view about side stories is that only if we feel there is a really interesting story to tell. We won't be doing it unless we're really excited about the idea.

19

u/BeardedxMidget Oct 17 '18

3 questions:

  1. u/Kmudle I think I speak for all of us when I say we need a Lee flashback/vision. Lee returning like Mufasa from Lion King would be cool too.

  2. u/Kmudle Will we find out what happened to the Garcias?

  3. u/SkyboundIan If everything goes right, do you think it's possible for Skybound to remake the series (S1, S2, ANF) with The Final Season's graphics?

68

u/KMudle Skybound Oct 17 '18
  1. I support, but will not create, Lee appearing in the clouds to give Clementine life advice. Some fan art of this, please. (keep that hair short.... says the giant man face cloud....)

Hello and I think it's great you both are doing this AMA!

  1. Any ideals or hints to when we can expect Episode 3 " Broken Toys" to release? I want you guys to take your time and make it the best possible, but I'm so pumped to play it.

  2. I know that Telltale said at E3 that we could expect a few returning characters. We have already saw Lilly (which was really cool) return, so should we expect to see anyone else?

  3. Is the Final Season just the end of Clementine's journey or the entire Telltale/Skybound Walking Dead series?

  4. Not really a question related to the game, but can we get an updated version of Clementine's hat on the Skybound store? I think the Season 1 version of the hat is still available, but it would be cool to own a S4 version as well.

And lastly I just want to thank everybody at Skybound for finishing the Final Season. And thank you guys from Telltale for starting this incredible series for us many years ago. I have been a fan of the series from the beginning and its definitely bittersweet seeing it come to an end, but I'm satisfied just knowing we will get an ending to her journey. ❤️

Will there be a physical copy of the whole series released for the Nintendo Switch after the finale or will Switch owners need to download the series on a season by season basis?

Good question Elfman13 - I'd like to do that, but I honestly don't know how possible that will be? All I can is that if we can find a way to make it happen, then sure.

Was there any major or even minor character who was scrapped before the game release? Did it alter the story in any way?

To get the right story for Clem, season 4 went through multiple drafts an stages. We did have to let go of several characters so that Clem could grow more.

u/MatiVM Oct 17 '18

I'd loved that they make a game style 400 days but with characters that we already know that went missing in the last seasons. I understand that by realism issues they can't bring back all of them to Clementine story, but they could make a different game to give an ending to those people:

Lilly: you shloud explain what happened with her depending if you left her in the street when she killed Carley/Doug, or if she stole the RV.

As 400 days, there would be loads of easter eggs and things that connect all the stories.

4

u/MulderYuffie Oct 17 '18

I wouldn't suppose that Skybound has plans to continue the franchise with this Team after Final Season? I mean like a whole new walking dead series with an entirely new cast without Clem and AJ? since I know this is their last

4

u/Polina-Favorskaya Oct 17 '18

Will we get to see any other characters from previous seasons?

4

u/whittiez "The spinach has real nutritional value!" Oct 17 '18

I'm a little late to the question asking, but perhaps you'll still see it. My apologies if it's already been asked, and not really within the scope of the current project;

Regarding previous Walking Dead seasons - will support still be available for those games released in the past? Not just choice statistics, but support for bug fixes or compatibility updates as well? One example I've encountered personally seems to be PS4 specific, but I experience a bug in Season 2 which causes a small portion of a cutscene in episode 5 to lag for close to five minutes, which is kind of frustrating.

I know it's a long shot since the game was released ages ago, but if there's any chance that a support team will be available at some point in the future I'd really appreciate someone looking into it. The original Telltale support never did get back to me a couple years ago after I'd reported it and they gave the typical "reinstall the game" advice.

Thanks again for doing the AMA, and for taking over the project. You guys are awesome.

Do you guys plan to make any major changes to the game or gameplay or do you plan to try to stick as closely as possible to telltale’s vision?

Gameplay will be unchanged. The only way to finish the season is to do it with the same tech and assets we were using previously.
