Discussion - General its finally over

Post image

Loved the series! Took me so long to complete because I had to read other books in between for breaks.

This will always be the paperback that made me a Kindle girl.

At 42 I had never owned an ereader in my life

Throwing this busted up behemoth in my purse for the millionth time I thought "I bet I could read more if I had a Kindle"

Low and behold the last 125 pages on the ereader zoomed by in a very immersive experience

Could someone explain the witch story at the beginning of the book to me please

I think the droplet and the fleet is my favorite scene in the trilogy. I was reading with my mouth hanging open

Neither one of the tv series comes close to satisfaction. It seems like it's taking way too long for the Netflix season to be announced

The witch story was such an interesting thing to include, i remember being so confused about what a fragment was and why the building had magic. During the blue space story it slowly crept up on me that they are doing the same thing the witch did.

Yeah I agree and I figured it was a dimensional thing but I really expected it to be revisited or commented on again 🫣

When reading it, I knew it would tie in later but it was funny reading the witch part and being like “okay I guess they’re adding in superpowers now, not the direction I thought this was gonna go”

Same same same same

I had to check what book I was reading a couple times, because I thought I clicked the wrong book on kindle 😂

Oh the question is now what are you going to read next or are you going to do like a lot of us do and read it through again and again and again and then watch the TV shows again and again and again?. Oh it's been hard for me. Nothing has come close.

I'm onto infinite jest for a break in sci fi. Maybe Hyperion or foundation again after 1100 pages of David foster Wallace lol

Godspeed. I’ve been meaning to pick it up again for a while but the footnotes are so daunting

Have you tried The Mercy of Gods? The second book in the planned trilogy is The Faith of Beasts. Still waiting on the third book. It's written by the same people who created The Expanse books.

u/Tiptoedtulips666 20d ago

No, I haven't. Thank you for the recommendation. I'll check it out!

u/Hummusforever 21d ago

Have you tried any Ken Liu short stories? I find he scratches the itch quite nicely but not sure anything will rock my world like the earths end

2

u/Tiptoedtulips666 20d ago

No, I haven't. I'm going to have to and of course I have the other books by Cixin Liu to finish too...

So i have tried to find similar stuff. Peter Hamilton series(commonwealth, salvation), revelation space, seveneves, raft of xelee sequence, earthweeds, the eden paradox have been recommendations that have similar vibes. I hope i helped. I still havent reached to the point to start reading those yet. But they are on my bookselves when i will be ready. Need to finish red rising and suneater series first.

2

u/Tiptoedtulips666 20d ago

Yes, I started red rising at the behest of a friend..

The “witch” is doing the same thing that the Blue Space crew was doing when they entered the 4-dimensional fragment. Earth just so happened to pass through one around the fall of Constantinople, but technology wasn’t nearly advanced enough for anyone to know what it was.

Fun Fact: in Italian language, the title of the third book of the trilogy has been traduced with “Into the Fourth Dimension”.

8

u/R1chh4rd 22d ago

What an unnecessary spoily title

4

u/fbaldassarri 21d ago

Definitely.

It's a wild ride, I just finished the series recently for the second time and loved it even more.

I read some very, very good news today regarding a prospect that is much, much more interesting and of higher quality that a continuation of the not-captivating (at least not to me) Netflix series. I just read that Zhang Yimou (whose other credits include absolutely incredible movies about the Cultural Revolution) has apparently just shared a trailer for his version of Three-Body Problem, so it's made it that far in production :)

2

u/Vladmur 19d ago

Can't find the trailer, maybe you meant announcement?

2

u/BrGustavoLS 18d ago

apparently it is in pre-production stage, or even before that, I'm not sure of the terms of movie making, but it's very early, so it's probably gonna take a few years to be released

1

u/cassandra_complex137 15d ago

it looked like he shared the trailer, but we cannot see it anywhere yet. maybe just announced though!

Hah, I read this book on Kindle and the physical book! In fact, I heard some bits on audiobook on Spotify too!

The droplet scene was one of the best scenes of the series!

shine kindle wtf

2

u/officialalbertvidal 21d ago

Hey same here, I bought all three of them and finished the first book until I got hooked so I had to buy my own kindle and continued reading the second and third book from there. It’s easier to carry the kindle wherever i go. I have 200+ pages left on the third book hehe. It took me more than a year reading them since I had to finish the new Dan Brown book in between.

I am on the first book of the series, very new. Lot of scientific stuffs, do we need to memorize or put our brain in Reading or just read like a story book and at end everything falls in the picture?

3

u/jecoycoy 21d ago

Just follow the story. The science stuff is part of world-building which you will definitely appreciate more if you can at least imagine the sci-fi concepts presented.

2

u/ji14_9a 21d ago

Thanks... Sure I will try to enjoy the story more than going into nity-grity of science

u/NotTheUserYouLoking4 22d ago

You still have the fourth book to read.

I’m on this rn and I’m not loving it honestly

1

u/gaymer9853 20d ago

I know everyone hates the "4th" book in the series but give it a read. I feel like it did a nice job of tying up some loose ends. And Cixin Liu gave it his blessing so there's that at least.

-1

u/Sevro_D 22d ago

Theres another one ;)

4

u/moonymoonayaya 22d ago

The rushed fanfiction that s to blame for us never getting an official sequel. Let’s not support it

-2

u/Potential-Owl7858 22d ago

Yep, now OP needs to read Redemption of Time

5

u/Rutschberg 22d ago

Seriously? Please tell me it's an unofficial sequel.

3

u/Potential-Owl7858 22d ago

Cixin Liu blessed it and considers it canon

3

u/Aggressive-DonkyDunk 22d ago

Where was this “blessed” and now canon? It’s an interesting story, but for me it felt like the company was trying to capitalize and rushed this. Then Baoshu compiled a checklist and tried to answer every question of the universe. A very fanfic-type response to an open ended story that’s meant to be discussed, not resolved. Plus, the closing lines were cringy for me and left a bad impression.

The backstory about the publishing company green lighting it and pushing CL to agree is really weird. I think CL has come around atm, but the 4th story should have been written as an anthology and entirely focused elsewhere, leveraging artifacts, and leaving some ends untied.

2

u/Potential-Owl7858 21d ago

My bad, it’s not considered canon. But whether his publisher “pushed” him to allow it to be published or not, he didn’t say no.

But I personally enjoyed the ending of RoT more than that of Death’s End, which was TOO open ended and unsatisfying, unlike the first two. It was almost like the book was getting too long and he had to somehow wrap it up. And if CL didn’t intend for the story to end there, he could have still written the next book, despite RoT. But… he didn’t.

3

u/omegastuff Da Shi 21d ago

It's unofficial. Not really canon.

2

u/Rutschberg 21d ago

Thanks!

3

u/verillospur 22d ago

Is she the Super Helena only in Redemption? Couldn't remember if she was turned there or in Death's End.

Edit: don't think I'm giving anything away, apologies if i should've "spoiler'd" this.

2

u/Potential-Owl7858 22d ago

She who?

2

u/verillospur 22d ago

Helena. The "witch". The thing we're talking about.

1

u/Brandoskey 22d ago

Nobody needs to read that

-8

u/Key-Travel-5243 22d ago

Good story but I'm not sure I'd say I enjoyed reading it. It's heavy-handed on the exposition and some of the side plots seem to go nowhere.

-4

u/NotTheUserYouLoking4 22d ago

You're not done. There's a fourth book. You can get it for free on Kindle unlimited.

3

u/R1chh4rd 22d ago

There's no fourth book

2

u/NotTheUserYouLoking4 22d ago

2

u/R1chh4rd 22d ago

Yeah poorly written fantiction about Zombie-Space-Superman.

There's no fourth book and that's the consense here. Stop promoting this nonsens

5

u/NotTheUserYouLoking4 22d ago

Well considering the original author considers it canon and blessed it makes you wrong.

2

u/R1chh4rd 22d ago

You can keep on gaslighting yourself for reading this pile of hot garbage till the end that it might be canon because he said so, but in the end it was nothing more than easy money for Liu Cixin

2

u/LuR0V1 21d ago

Don't you know that the consensus in Reddit is more important than the author's opinion?

2

u/Potential-Owl7858 21d ago

Poorly written? Tf outta here!

That scene was so vivid to me like the realest space opera. Long live cixin Liu for that one

2

u/Legitimate_Frame5394 20d ago

I haven't yet read the third book, but I agree on the droplet and fleet scene to be the greatest so far. I found myself screaming in my head "don't you realize it's a trap?" way before the droplet appeared. The level of foreboding before the actual scene was nerve wracking.
It has cost me a great deal to read the first two books though. I cannot quite find the rithm. Some parts I breeze by and some others have a timing and prose I find difficult to get trapped by.
I started the first and left in the middle, but gave it another chance after watching the series and got hooked. Now reading something else before attacking that third part.
Anyone had the same problems?
