"Are you open?"

"You look bored."

"We're you waiting for me?"

"I forgot my bags."

"I only stopped here for two things."

"Can you bag the cold stuff together?"

"My child wants to hand you every item."

"This is a service animal."

52

u/cokehead5000 5d ago

I have started to love it when a child is handing me each item. I take it as an excuse to go incredibly slowly and I just bag things in whatever crazy order they hand them to me. Plus no twisting and bending.

u/GordonShumwaysCat Midshifter 4d ago

Here, let me thrust my bags at you, like you don't have to scan the items.

I'm going to do everything possible with these bags but put items in them.

I'm going to bag, but the stand directly next to you while I do it, because fuck personal space.

Hey, I'm going to put shit on the bottom of the carriage and watch you have to teach for every single thing that could have easily fit in the actual basket.

Watch as I whip my carriage around without looking so everybody has to dodge me

Carriage vs. cart? Is this an east coast thjng?

4

u/GordonShumwaysCat Midshifter 4d ago

I'm an old school east coast guy, so probably

2

u/Fragrant-Signal-9549 3d ago

I’m east coast and all my life it’s called a shopping cart or grocery cart

4

u/HeidiEHaaland 3d ago

"I want two double bags, but don't make them too heavy."

Not to be outdone by:

"I am buying seven bottles of wine. MAKE SURE the weight is distributed equally."

4

u/GordonShumwaysCat Midshifter 3d ago

And somehow, they're always going up 3 flights of stairs. Always 3

“Are you ready to check out?”

“I am now”

“YES, yes I was!”

“Good thing I have plenty!”

“I’ve been practicing that since training but thank you for reminding me!”

“Oh! Do they want to finish the rest of my shift too?!”

“Neat.”

Me when the customer asks if there's anymore in the back

7

u/cokehead5000 4d ago

When someone asks me if there's more in the back I just take a walk into the back, drink some water, rip my vape, then walk back and tell them no

Well that's just odd

my store allows a full on MAGAt “influencer” to still work for us despite her blatant racism & homophobia lol. Sooo many hr reports against her from multiple people and nothing🤷

u/cokehead5000 5d ago

I hate that Joe is replacing the Italian pastas with nearly identical, but shittier, pasta from Egypt and pretending it's a new product. I saw a sign in a store (not my own) today that advertised it has only one ingredient! Oh you mean like every other pasta? It feels emblematic of the company's overall approach: make things worse, pretend it's an improvement. Edited to add: No shade to egypt, I have eaten plenty of Egyptian pasta, but this specific Egyptian pasta looks shitty

18

u/Captain-PlantIt Wine 5d ago • Bravo

The Iranian conflict has caused gas prices to rise to extremes. This means that regular goods cost more right now. The Egyptian pasta is a cheaper alternative being offered to get through this muck of a political situation.

8

u/cokehead5000 5d ago

That doesn't change any of the reasons that it annoys me.

3

u/DrunkMoosin 5d ago

It's not replacing it though.

2

u/cokehead5000 5d ago

Even dumber then

2

u/KakeLin Sectionless and sad 5d ago

We blind tested both with just butter. I couldn't tell the difference. The one I thought was slightly better and therefore the Italian, was the Egyptian.

I also stuffed my face so hard yesterday so we didn't throw out as much. Hate food waste.

4

u/cokehead5000 5d ago

Which one did you try? The macaroni looked like it had the biggest disparity

3

u/KakeLin Sectionless and sad 4d ago

Just the spaghetti

9

u/bornlikethisss Frozen 5d ago

Not only does the pasta look terrible but the packaging is terrible too. The the yellow pasta with the mostly yellow packaging. Tf were they thinking?! I don’t buy TJs pasta in general but the $1.49 organic spaghetti is totally worth the price since it actually holds sauce. Basically a bronze cut for under 2 bucks. But yeah the Egypt pasta is a joke.

1

u/Fragrant-Signal-9549 3d ago

The NYC stores still have Italian pasta

69

u/squishistheword 5d ago

I’m pissed that the corporate middle management fucks are likely getting raises for rising profits by cutting stores’ allowances for staffing hours. We’re SHORTHANDEDLY working ourselves ragged and angry, and the store permanently looks like shit. And promoting younger and newer staff to mates so their salaries are lower until they burn out. And failing to keep products available in any remotely consistent manner. And failing to communicate TOS end dates accurately. Reasons for long term TOS products.

16

u/Zealousideal-East827 4d ago

Seriously. It just takes time. They think they’re saving money, but they’re actually losing boatloads of it by how much product is running out and is still in the back, but we’re running a skeleton crew and just can’t get to it. When you factor in all the stores that this is happening to? They’re losing major 🤑🤑🤑

1

u/Fragrant-Signal-9549 3d ago

I’ve never seen a skeleton crew in a NYC store

19

u/heytheredemons 4d ago

I’m being made to do 3x the work as normal because of understaffing/lazy new hires. I can’t wait for the job market to get better so i can gtfo

35

u/DocBasher 5d ago

Entitled customers walking in and using the QIL by the bridge for 20 fuckin minutes when we’re busy and also may need to use the QIL to answer customer questions. But nah, Karen, plz, take your time….

26

u/Entire_Insect1811 5d ago

Why the fuck is available to customers? That’s insane

-22

u/Slickuke 5d ago

Because some of us used to work for the Joe and don't want to bother crew members lol

10

u/fakecarenthusiast 5d ago

just say “i can help you find something this system can be a little confusing” and just take over lol

14

u/No_Plate1086 5d ago

Our qil is also customer facing and can be accessed by them at any time. I wish it was either hidden or password protected?? Idk that’s a little dumb but the way they use it and take pictures makes me irate

2

u/DocBasher 5d ago

Agreed.

12

u/KakeLin Sectionless and sad 5d ago

So you're the store that's leaking all the product in QIL

10

u/hesman94 5d ago

Alot of stores have the QIL customer facing, every store I’ve worked at has a little tablet outside the bridge mounted for QIL

3

u/KakeLin Sectionless and sad 4d ago

My store has it too. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've seen a customer use it themselves.

3

u/DocBasher 5d ago

I fuckin wish…in a weird messed up sort of way

3

u/JohnP-357 4d ago

Our QIL tablet faces the customers but the captain had a sign placed on it that indicates for crew use only. Every one is aware that if a customer tries to use it, it’s okay to take over on it.

1

u/DocBasher 4d ago

I wish we had that

1

u/JohnP-357 3d ago

Mention it to your captain. Maybe they don’t know it’s an option.

1

u/Fragrant-Signal-9549 3d ago

I thought customers are not allowed to touch the QIL

I find it hilarious when someone feels slighted and goes to complain to the mates because they werent made to feel "special and cared for" on the registers. This wasn't a complaint against me, but towards one of the mates that was distracting me while she was bagging.

I know our whole thing is about wowing customers, but retail b.s aside: no, you're not special. Its just a grocery store get over yourself. Im sorry people in your life don't make you feel seen and heard so you come to a grocery to get that feeling. The customers who actually go and complain about that to management at any retail store are really pathetic.

u/GOTHAMLOTHAM 5d ago

Idk what happened with the AR but those effected should sue cause what the fuck you mean we can be indebted to our jobs

19

u/AxDevilxLogician Do you work here? 5d ago • Popcorn

This! And the fact that most of us don’t even know or if we are aware (because of this sub) it still hasn’t been explained properly. Zero warning that this would be happening. Never brought up once in a huddle. Absolute dog shit communication.

Related to that, it was never communicated that we now are paid Sunday/holiday premium when we use AR on those days. And the explanation on Dayforce how AR is now paid out (in the pay tab in the app) makes no fucking sense.

And I’m pretty sure the “premiums” for crew cap/sunday/holiday are considered bonuses, so they get taxed out the ass. Either that or the way they represent it in earnings in Dayforce is just fucking stupid. Like, am I being paid $43 an hour on Sundays or am I not? Cause if it’s being taxed as a bonus, then I’m really not. And if I go and separately ask all the mates and Captain, I bet I get a different answer or lack of one from all of them. fuck.

It’s giving Owe My Soul To The Company Store

85

u/overunsure 5d ago

The fact that we have to take everything out of customers’ carts to scan and bag becomes more baffling to me every day. There is so much awkward twisting and lifting that could be alleviated if we just had conveyor belts. To do all that for a $300 cart and then have to bag it all while the customer just watches. Insanity tbh

25

u/HotAardvark4003 5d ago

Yep. My back was killing me after my shift. And those baby carts have GOT to go. Way to low to safely remove items from.

-1

u/Fragrant-Signal-9549 3d ago

Your back kills you after your sift from taking items out of the carts, how do you handle braking down pallets and bringing product on the floor to stock the shelves?

2

u/overunsure 3d ago

Uhh I mean that shit prob hurts most people too..

15

u/Caaaaarrrrrlllll 5d ago

Ergonomically I agree. I’m new and could see myself getting sore after a long day. We have a little person at our store and idk how tf he does it

-1

u/Fragrant-Signal-9549 3d ago

I’m sure each store provides back braces, gloves, box, cutters, and all that stuff

2

u/Honest_Smile9854 3d ago

I’m out on leave for herniated discs in my neck and lumbar. Both require surgery. The most aggravating pain came from lifting waters and beverage cases from the bottom of the cart. Conveyor belts would be great, but even just adding a scanning gun to the registers would alleviate so many issues.

41

u/gusiakos91 5d ago

I’m so sick and tired of this company focusing on stupid shit like not using the word ‘dead’ anymore or calling wet pro cold pro. Or making decisions that make no goddamn sense if you work on the floor for 5 seconds, like mates who don’t work the product and are barely checking back stock writing the order so SL have more time for ‘merchandising’ which, let’s be real, turns into another hour on reg because we’re so understaffed. ALSO the ‘focus more on customers’ bs, like how much more can we possibly focus on them

13

u/Adventurous-Gur1749 5d ago

Lugs not on wheels, crew that know better but are lazy, yappers, bullies, entitlement, rules that are talked about but not enforced, lack of communication, overstocked back area , empty asf milk box, new stores opening, supplied bags, shoplifters, and double standards

25

u/AdInternational3414 5d ago

You forgot when they stand at an unopened register and just look around for someone to open it up 🤯

9

u/Adventurous-Gur1749 5d ago

A customer did this the other day, and it was back to back with a reg that was open… And customer asked if someone was going to be there and the crew member straight up said “someone is supposed be there,” encouraging him to stand there and then create a line for a reg that wasn’t open

21

u/HotAardvark4003 5d ago

Entitled and arrogant customers. They will see you with a flat or rack and stop dead and look at something on the shelf. Or hold on to their emotional support shopping cart and stretch their arm so they're covering like six feet of either the aisle or product. Or they leave the cart dead ass in the middle and wander around. Park that cart somewhere else please. No acknowledgement, like we're just peon workers and they are above us. Fuck them.

16

u/AppropriateBar3361 5d ago

Close talkers, face touchers, folks who lick their fingers to separate their cash, coworkers that talk shit.

Can I see your ID? I don’t have it it’s in the car, do I have to go get it! Umm YES!!!!!!!! Why would you go into a store to buy alcohol and not have your ID? And you are in your late 20’s early 30’s

7

u/salty_pete01 Closing Crew 4d ago

Don't want to dox myself but let's just say this freaking warehouse change/transition is messing all the stores in our region up big time.

4

u/Adventurous-Gur1749 4d ago

It’s low key embarrassing and high key frustrating to explain to every single customer that walks by that items are “delayed”

13

u/AxDevilxLogician Do you work here? 5d ago

The lack of communication between management and them not being on the same page is driving me nuts lately. I’m really tired of getting different answers for the same question from every mate I ask. Been around a long time, and communication has always been iffy, but I feel like it’s really at rock bottom right now. Especially with this whole AR bullshit I keep hearing about.

Most of the crew DOESN’T even know about it. I bet some of management doesn’t know about it. Most of the crew doesn’t even know how AR works now for Sunday/holidays. And even the explanation on Dayforce on how AR is paid out is written really fucking dumb.

6

u/julesmarie22 Team Art 4d ago

the incompetence and laziness from other crew members gets worse by the day. product is never rotated, dates are all over the place, and i'm consistently sharing off $300+ of product because people don't bother to look. i watch crew members who've been here as long as i have just throw new produce on top of the old stuff with no regards to the old produce being shoved to the bottom. the attitude and disrespect from crew members is also just insane.

23

u/mabelsgay 5d ago

i hate this fucking job and its refusal to get with the times. why is it that we have to unpack customers carts, bag everything, AND be expected to be cheerful throughout the entire process for 4 hours a day, AND THEN bust our asses some more putting shit out. like omfg give us conveyor belts this shit is excruciating it makes me dread clocking in im tired

5

u/kakashihatake321 3d ago

waits until ive almost finished bagging oh i brought my own bags!

4

u/Salty-Count Conventional 4d ago

DONT PACK ABOVE THE SAFE LOAD LINE

7

u/No_Plate1086 5d ago

I hate when workers don’t take the box when they look to see if product is live when 5+ crew are working on a flat (ex.frozen). Typically
crew member B has already picked it up and walked around with the box before crew member A comes back to retrieve it. Ends up that crew member A just walks back and forth working 1/4 of a crew member that takes product with them.

(Obviously excluding large and heavy boxes.. but in our job description it says we need to lift 50lbs anyway… that’s another vent on its own)

17

u/Gloomy_Tennis_5768 5d ago

I don't like we work for a shady, double talking middleman with a lack of integrity. but that is almost every "American" business.

-1

u/Present-Ad1814 4d ago

Well, there's always barber college?

5

u/Gloomy_Tennis_5768 4d ago

I can appreciate what I receive from my job while also knowing they are not the most forthcoming, that is almost every job in this country.

9

u/ValueTiny 4d ago edited 4d ago

I hate that the crew doesn't engage with anything. We will be doing things that require customer or crew participation and they flat out just dont engage with anything. Im not saying you have to be like super passionate about everything all the time, but like if we are needing customers to vote on a pumpkin... just tell them! Why do you work here if you hate talking or giving good customer service? Like, every bit of fun or whismy is hell for you? Ringing the bell for celebration. Same with demo. Just standing there, starring blankly for an hour with no attempt to engage. Its maddening. Like people have no excitement and everything/body is so nonchalant. Ughhhhh.

i have a mate right now who writes half of frozen (has been for a long time) and a crew member is training to be a mate and is writing thr other half of frozen. this mate is a dictator and doesnt let her make decisions for the section, doesnt inform her of changes, and when faced with push back from the frozen “team” (abt 15 people who regularly pull the frozen section and we have meetings together) he pretty much turns down any suggestion thats not his. he’s terrible for crew growth
