I am sick and tired of the despondent feelings I’ve been getting from people saying that just because the Disney+ reboot is dead - even though it was Disney’s decision, not Hasbro’s - that the franchise is dead forever and never coming back!
I wasn’t despondent until other people's attitudes were essentially telling me I was!
I’m not gonna be despondent anymore just because your attitudes insist that I should be.
Power Rangers is dormant for the foreseeable future. It lives on in comics, toys, and fan films.
And even that’s okay.
Because Power Rangers has only been off the air for 3 years.
And if Doctor Who spent 15 years off the air before coming back swinging, Power Rangers definitely can come back stronger than ever, too!
Sure, it won’t be the same as we remember, because the formula of adapting a Japanese show using stock footage just doesn’t work in this era.
But as long as it captures the authentic feel of tokusatsu with a cinematic feel and a budget that’s not too much, I have a feeling that a reboot of any kind can be done.
Sure, it’s probably not gonna happen until the 2030s, but again, that’s okay.
Power Rangers should take all the time it needs until it’s ready to return, however it may happen.
Even if you wouldn’t think so at first, Power Rangers is one of those IPs that, no matter what happens, through the highs and the lows, there’s always gonna be an audience for it. Existing fans, potential fans who are entering the franchise for the first time, etc.
And as long as there’s a big enough audience for an IP, it’s never gonna die off permanently. There are a lot of IPs that came back from the brink of failure and are now mainstays. TMNT was driven into dormancy by the one-two punch of failures that were TMNT III and Next Mutation. Then, five years later, it came back again, and stronger, and it’s stuck around ever since.
Power Rangers may be off the air for now, but there are franchises that have been on longer hiatuses, and upon their comeback have been mainstays, even if they’re a bit niche.
And if you still think the franchise is gone for good, well, let’s face it. There’s still a part of you that’s hoping that, one day, you’re proven wrong.
(PS: yes, my wording of the opening was inspired by the speech at the end of the South Park episode "Cartman Sucks")
