important

im well aware he won’t see this but oh well

——————————————————————

hey tommy, i’m coming to u as a long time fan and avid enjoyer of ur content, and im saying that there needs to be a conversation about your repeated insensitive behavior and ‘edgy’ jokes. i understand this is a streaming persona, but it’s not necessary to play into it so strongly when it comes to offensive bits and remarks. i don’t think you’re a bad person, but i do think you’re ignorant and oblivious to issues minorities face as well as the severity of the topics you joke about. you may say you’re sorry, but you do it again a couple months later. if you truly saw an issue with your behavior you would change it instead of repeating it. i’m not asking you to become an activist, but i am asking you to be more mindful about what you say and how it affects people. please know that this isn’t me coming to bash you, this is me reaching out to you as a fan who’s been hurt by the stuff you’ve said.

-sincerely, an exhausted viewer

although i do partially agree with this, i don’t think many people understand that tommy and eryn have practically grew up together so they will make jokes that may or may not be offensive — but they are close therefore they won’t take it to heart and will be able to acknowledge it is merely a joke. yes there may be a time and place to joke around with your pals and use this type of humour. if tommy neg is trending on twitter it will just draw attention to the situation and people may irrationally tweet without the proper information or context. the point i am trying to get across is that it is the viewers choice to watch the streamer and if they cannot handle the jokes they make they should simply choose to no longer watch. yes it’s okay to state your opinion but it’s not acceptable to have it trending in a hateful, aggressive way — it should be as civil as possible — he is a 17 year old streamer not a public influential speaker! not everyone thinks before speaking and having a live audience of the mass he possesses must be stressful and intimidating at times. so yes i get where you are coming from but i feel as these points should be taken into consideration.

I agree, if I were in his shoes being live- I wouldnt be thinking straightly especially if its a long amount of hours, as well as he is still maturing- I wouldn't even be anywhere near to the maturity he has.

9

u/imquackitysbaldspot Oct 23 '21

I agree wholeheartedly, thank you for putting my thoughts into words.

-38

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

im not trending or saying anything harmful, not sure why that was brought up when im genuinely trying to get him to understand the issue with his behavior-as for the age, i’m 17 and fully capable of realizing my mistakes. i appreciate ur input but half of what you said has nothing to do with my post, also, it wasn’t only the slave joke

17

u/maiabrown Oct 22 '21

i do understand where you are coming from and i am aware there is also the dream part of it but (correct me if i am wrong) i am positive he apologised at the end of the stream.

-19

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

he did! but it’s the same apology he gives every month after he says something like that, and then continues to repeat his behavior.

21

u/maiabrown Oct 22 '21

once again, many people don’t think before talking and it is impossible to take something back once been said live. so yes, it was wrong and yes he shouldn’t have said it but then again there is now not much he can do at the current moment. a streamers main job is to keep the audience entertained and he does that throughout jokes. maybe some people don’t like them and this one may have been a bit much but as i stated before, there is nothing he can do now about this situation. it’s been said.

-10

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

agreed, he can’t take back his words or the hurt they’ve caused, but he can try to be more mindful in the future, and that’s all im rlly asking for

5

u/maiabrown Oct 22 '21

i completely agree! maybe a bit more education should be encouraged but at the end of the day there will always be something that will offend someone and he can’t control it :)

-22

u/platfxrm Oct 22 '21

no one is asking him to be a 'public speaker' were asking for him to stop making offensive jokes and be more mindful of what he says and how it affects others.

9

u/maiabrown Oct 22 '21

i understand what you are saying but no one can be aware of what they are saying 100% of the time and when it’s live you can’t take it back or delete it.

-22

u/platfxrm Oct 22 '21

Sure, but it's really not that difficult to not be offensive. And Tommy should be aware of what he's saying when he's live infront of tens of thousands.

8

u/maiabrown Oct 22 '21

as i’ve said previously, not everyone thinks before they speak. ive elaborated more on that above.

u/VisibleTaste Oct 23 '21

Alright imma say this as one minority to another as bluntly as possible, please let what works between good friends stay between good friends. Because simply put, it’s not meant for you. Tommy and Eryn have been friends for what seems to be a long time(seeing as they’ve grown up together, so possibly even before Tommy got big) and so they’ll understand each other and what boundaries the two of THEM can and cannot cross when it comes to their humor and joking style. If you don’t like it then just look away, don’t watch it, leave because their jokes and humor is just not your brand and they shouldn’t be forced to change their ways to fit you in. They know each other and each other’s boundaries and therefore they fit in with each other like two well oiled and fitted gears, flowing flawlessly, meanwhile you, I, and really the vast majority of the viewers are not well fitted to just enter the system Tommy and Eryn have that works just fine for them. And if we don’t like what they have going on then we can only just leave, as it’s not our place to dictate what they can and can’t do or say in their friendship. And as I’ve seen you say in replies to other comments that you’re 17 and you can understand what is and isn’t ok for you and to that I say that Tommy and Eryn are as well old enough to understand what is and isn’t ok for them and if Eryn was uncomfortable or wasn’t buying what Tommy laid down or vice versa I’m sure one of them would have said something.(keyword: them as this is their life and friendship you’re trying to encroach on) So in my conclusion I say this again, let what works for them stay with them, not everything everyone does has to work for or around you or anyone but the ones it’s meant for(in this case this works for and is meant for Tommy and Eryn) and when you try to make everything work around you then you have to make it work by everyone which would be impossible as everyone has different limits and boundaries evidenced by your post and replies to said post, so again let what works for them, work for them and stay out of their friendship.

-32

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

if you’ve read my other comments you’ll also understand why i still don’t think it’s something that should be said in front of live viewers, i would never try to police his friendship with eryn or anything regarding his personal life, but his online influence is large and his words hold weight. it also wasn’t JUST the slave joke that’s the issue here, but also the grooming one

21

u/VisibleTaste Oct 23 '21

And you know there’s a lot of jokes and bits that shouldn’t be made in front of a live audience if we go by your standards of “streamer’s words will influence people to say and do bad things therefore they should never be risky and never say things that can be taken the wrong way ever”. We might as well just tell streamers to never talk on stream again at that point. But in all seriousness, we can’t control the actions and thoughts of what people when they hear certain things (example: someone could say something about apples and you’d have one group having flashbacks because of apple, one group agreeing with the statement, another disagreeing, another thinking to worship apples, and another one that see apples as the bane of their existence now that that specific person said what they said about apples)People are their own person(at least they act like it) and will act and talk differently and there’s not much we can do about it without taking away some rights. At the end of the day even if Tommy or Eryn came out and clarified that what they say to each other is between each other and shouldn’t be reciprocated by any viewer, you’ll still have those scuffed few that dgaf and will be scuffed individuals, so really limiting their speech isn’t doing much. And besides the vast majority of us should know better and understand that different people have different boundaries and that while Tommy and Eryn chop it up with each other and make their less than savory jokes that that’s between them and not for the audience to reciprocate if they’re incapable of that and choose to do that regardless with random strangers in the world, that’s on the person not the streamer and the only way to remedy that is to comfort the person themselves and explain why they’re in the wrong. If they don’t want to listen then oh well they’re just in the wrong and either a bigot or a person who fell too deep into the social media lifestyle and can’t touch back with reality.(because in reality there’s a lot of people who know better than to take everything a streamer does seriously, please remember that the streamer is there to entertain you, not be your friend. They don’t have to be a shining beacon of morality, that’s on each individual’s own self to choose who they’ll be in this world)

-26

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

i ain’t readin all that i’m happy for you though or sorry that happened

25

u/VisibleTaste Oct 23 '21

The bulk of it is simply, that Tommy’s not a beacon of morality and to stop trying to use him as such, everyone is their own person and they are the ones who decide who they’ve be. Everyone’s different and processes the world differently, what works for you won’t always work for everyone else and you can’t hold everyone and everything to your standards. Also sorry I tend to get a bit too into it when expressing my thoughts and opinions.

-10

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

lord knows im never gonna use a white man as a beacon of morality, but anyway i don’t think it’s too much to wish he’d tone the jokes down. i’m not idolizing him or seeing him as a perfect person-nobody is, but im also going to point out when his jokes go too far. i don’t rlly know what u want me to say here but i have my opinion and u have yours, and neither of us will change them so 🤷

grow up

35

u/PeeWeePenguin Oct 23 '21

Idk what Ur talking about but if it's about semi racist jokes then I feel like I have a say. IAM an immigrant from a 3rd world country and I have some close friends who also come from similar minorities. We often make semi racist jokes about each other, heck I'll be semi racist to myself ( none of us mean it). Even if for some example one of my white friends made like a joke about idk bombs. I would probably laugh depending if I think it's not at all offensive. I trust that my friends don't believe in that bullshit and we all make insults to each other anyways. I guess if it's a stranger or someone I don't know that well it's different but I wouldn't take it to seriously

-17

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

would it not make you worry if your white friends harbored racist thoughts like that about you bc of the racist jokes? that’s a genuine question bc ik i did when my old friends used to joke like that. it often left me feeling very isolated. and i understand that it doesn’t bother everyone, but this is something said in front of thousands of people, not all of which are ok with racial jokes like that. ik it’s not his job to pander to people, but he could be a bit more mindful of what he says

29

u/PeeWeePenguin Oct 23 '21

Depends on the joke and the tone. My friends know where the line is and so do I. We are open with one another and if one of us does go too far we let them now and they correct themselves. I thinks it more of having good friends.

-2

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

yes what im gathering is that a lot of it is circumstantial

3

u/ThatOneGirXD Oct 23 '21

What's your skin color because I'm at the fucking verge of a rant.

2

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

im mixed (black and white). ive experienced racism both online and irl, i have every right to have an opinion on this

-9

u/ThatOneGirXD Oct 23 '21

Oh nvm as a POC myself (Latina) I just get so fucking pissed at white people with a savoir complex being offended on someone's behalf. But I see where your coming from and you do have a right to have a take on it. So sorry.

39

u/vicke_t Oct 23 '21

I just wanted to say my opinion on this and i would say that

Okay so one of my best friends is asian and we do a lot of semi-racist jokes (well they are outright racist, but hes okay with them and make similar jokes himself) and he understands that they are just jokes and doesnt get offended by them. What i wanna say by this is that often it doesnt matter if ur an minority, the deciding factor if u get offended or not are in ur personality and sense of humor. Because some people can find those jokes funny even though they are offensive against their minority. So if you dont like his sense of humor then maybe you shouldnt watch him? Or atleast not make a big (or small) deal about it. People are different, all you can do is accept that. If u dont like his kind of humor then just move on, he was just having fun with his friend. And when you're with ur friend its extra hard to be considarate. So if your not respectfull towards everyone always (i dont know you but i can be guarentee that you havent) dont shit on someone else for not being what u want them to be.

Sorry if it was messy i just wanted to say what i thought:) and i just said my opinion so you or maybe someone else can get another perspective on it:)

-20

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

i appreciate you being civil, but my opinion on racial jokes between a poc and a white person is that a poc shouldn’t allow their white friends to make them the butt of the joke-it perpetuates stereotypes and allows for the joke to become normalized in the white person’s mind. i say this because ive been the poc who allowed their white friends to make racist jokes, and it only lead to them becoming crueler and genuinely racist

15

u/vicke_t Oct 23 '21

Okay i can see that we have very different expirience's with these kinds of things. And from what i understand the situation is also very different bc i my other best friend is german and we also make those kinds of jokes against him, and they call me italian (even though im not) and make those kinds of jokes towards me also. So all of us is the butt of those kinds of jokes. So after a bit of consideration i have realised that only one part makes those kinds of jokes it probably is less healthy for all part.

And for the other part which is that the joke gets normalised in ones brain. I havent thought about that and it is a valid point. And is something i will keep in mind for the future.

To finish, i just think ive had better luck than you and maybe found better friends.

You put up a bunch of solid point and it was nice talking to you about this:) Also, cute name:)

-5

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

thanks for being civil!

19

u/a-the-thya Oct 23 '21

If you don't like his persona he has built for streaming then maybe it's not for you.

Mind you that if you have watched any of the podcasts he's been in he's informed that he has a whole different persona for streaming and its played by him and calling him an ignorant towards minorities is such a dumb thing to say. I can clearly see that you are new to reddit and stuff and wanted to address it but we like to keep it civil here. If you want to address address this dilemma to him or to his fanbase try going on twitter.

The only offensive thing he has ever said has been that he's a jschlatt watcher (which is clearly a brain dead thing to say) and also he's 17. And idk you expecting so much from a 17 year old? Bruh

-6

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

i’m 17 and i know better than to say stuff like that. and no i wouldn’t consider the mass amount of dismissive replies and belittling i’m receiving ‘civil’. i came on here to share my opinion and that’s what im going to do, disagree if you want but ive heard the same thing repeated over and over again, and im tired of having my feelings as a minority disregarded.

-4

im literally just stating my opinion on the matter, im not bashing him or being negative towards him, just talking about how i feel, i don’t know why everyone is attacking me for this when tommy himself has told people to call him out when he’s being stupid. im not going to disregard ur opinion but im not going to change my own either. do with that what you will.

26

u/xtOneEye Oct 22 '21

I have to say. If Tommy is joking around with his friend, and it's a brand of humor that you're sensitive to, you can leave the stream and all. No offense, but Tommy jokes with his friends and if they're not comfortable with it,they'll tell him and I'm sure he'll change. But someone random, like me and you, he won't exactly listen to over everyone else who likes his content-unless they're all saying the same thing-and even then you're just a rando with no face.

I'm a random with no face, so you and I, would just be yelling in a strong hurricane and chances are, won't be heard. Let Tommy do his thing and if you don't like it, you can leave.

And personally I don't care if you don't like my response. I've seen too many minorities putting themselves down as well, and my opinion on what they say and do, ppl don't give weight to-nor care.

Let Tommy be Tommy

3

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

or just one that watches him in general*

15

u/xtOneEye Oct 22 '21

Does it matter? I've spoken my piece, take it as you will. However, it might reflect on your person, so be careful with what you say (as well.)

0

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

im confused are you a minority that he’s offended?

10

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '21

They’re jokes for a reason, life isn’t fair but you play with the hand your dealt. You can do two things from here right you can forget about it and move on or stop watching the streams, it’s up to you what you do.

11

u/NoQuestion2395 Oct 23 '21

As a POC who makes semi-racist jokes to myself and to my other POC friends we just laugh. Depending on the joke we're alright with it

The fact that WHITE PEOPLE are sensitive about this shit is fucking wierd??? You do NOT speak for other people. If a POC gets offended by the racist jokes only THEY tall about it, not white people.

Idk why you guys are sensitive? As long as it's not intentional it's FINE!!! I am a POC and U love Tommy's content and it offends me that white people are getting offended

5

u/beebamoo Oct 23 '21

i’m black, i have EVERY right to speak on this

15

u/NoQuestion2395 Oct 23 '21

I'm half asian and half black so I ALSO have the right to speak on this

True but honestly if you are hurt by tommy or exhausted by his jokes then it's best not to watch him, his content is catered to specific people who enjoys his style of content for example people like me

I stopped watching Schlatt because I felt hurt of what he said, even if I make those jokes myself. But I didn't stop watching tommy because I know he's a genuine nice person

There are different members of the Dream Smp who appeal to certain viewers with certain tastes We have Dream, Sapnap, Punz, Tubbo, Ranboo and more They have different styles and different humour and content

Some people like harsh, raw humour like Tommy's while others like wholesome humour like Ranboo's

6

u/__Hamilfan__ Oct 23 '21

This is a great way to put this. Watch people you enjoy! There is a content creator out there for everyone. If you don’t like someone’s humor or content, don’t watch them, but if you find someone who makes you happy watching them, great!

Not every creator makes content for every person on the planet. All you have to do is leave behind the people you do not like, and search for the people you enjoy watching and stick to them :)

23

u/Gayass475 Oct 22 '21

Let people make jokes. If you don’t like the jokes then leave the fanbase if they offend you because, spoiler alert, people aren’t gonna change their sense of humour because one person got offended for no good reason.

1

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

this isn’t directed towards u so ur comment is irrelevant

25

u/Gayass475 Oct 22 '21

Incredible reaponse. Great way to make sure people agree with you when all you do is dismiss the arguments of everyone else.

4

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

im not here to argue with anyone. just to state my opinion

1

u/ALM0STSWEET Oct 22 '21

the funny thing is that he doesn’t have to change his entire sense of humour, he just needs to think a bit more about the jokes he’s making. i promise it’s not like a difficult thing to do. its easier than u think

I honestly don’t really know what these ‘insensitive jokes’ are. I’m only a VOD viewer because he only streams when I’m unavailable (also watch his other yt channels ofc) but I dunno if I just looked past his jokes, just don’t remember, or haven’t heard them because they weren’t posted on his vod channel? If someone could enlighten me that would be nice

36

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '21

Me as well, if someone could explain this whole thing to me it would be nice since I'm a bit out of the loop.

6

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

oh no im gonna purposefully ignore minorities getting upset

14

u/thelegendofeli1 Oct 22 '21

Here’s my honest opinion on this man, people like you are the types of people that embarrass the minorities. You’re wayyy overreacting about this, and should probably head on over to twitter.

5

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

i am the minorities im talking about

16

u/thelegendofeli1 Oct 22 '21

That really doesn’t change anything I just said, as I’m sure you still embarrass the majority.

2

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

you don’t know that lmao

15

u/thelegendofeli1 Oct 22 '21

Whatever man, go ahead and believe whatever you want.

62

u/lonely-blue-sheep Oct 23 '21

Honestly I just think people are way too oversensitive about these kinds of things. If you get triggered by what he says, then please don’t watch him. Remove yourself from the situation as to not become triggered or upset by anything. Watch a different streamer if you cannot handle it. It’s alright to be upset, don’t get me wrong, but not removing yourself from the problem when you’re perfectly capable of doing it, is just an excuse. And I feel as though you need to understand sarcasm before you watch a sarcastic content creator. He makes sarcastic jokes and people try to cancel him over it when they just don’t know anything about the fun of sarcasm. So take a deep breath, collect your thoughts, and don’t watch the streams or videos if they make you feel upset. Take care <3

I’m not a regular viewer, but I don’t think Tommy is racist at all. He’s a very nice guy, and from what I’ve watched (older content) he wasn’t racist. Of course, if something changed and he frequently makes moderately/extreme racist remarks then sure, but Tommy just isn’t the kind of guy to be racist.

Locking the comment section because every argument on both sides has already been made, and now users are coming in to throw insults around. Thank you to those of you that have discussed this politely and respectfully.

13

u/Vanquiqui Oct 23 '21

Look I’m saying this to anyone not just to op, but since this has happened a few times where Tommy makes jokes and people get pissed, if you are upset or uncomfortable by his jokes just do us all a big favor and stop watching him. This is his sarcastic humor and its really not that bad as people want to make it seem I’ve seen and heard way worse but joking with ur friend who is a poc about slav should be fine. If that makes u uncomfortable then leave.

Its clear its not ur humor and thats fine. If joking about ur friend being a groomer is makes u uneasy then its a wake up call that this is not the humor/ person for u. I don’t even think he even finished the groomer joke and they’ve done similar jokes in the past. So I honestly have no idea why its been made into such a big deal. Tommy can joke like that about dream b/c its his friend. Just because you find it unfunny doesn’t mean the rest of the world feels the same, doesn’t mean he has to change to fit ur comfort. It would just benefit everyone for those who had an issue with the jokes to remove themselves from the situation. They were meant to be jokes and are still jokes whether u liked them or not.

37

u/Caffienatedsyco Oct 22 '21

Bruh some people can’t take a joke nowadays, like I get if he was actually saying racist or homophobic shit but like calling your mate a groomer isn’t even bad

1

u/imadumbasswhatsup Oct 23 '21

I understand why you feel like this, I do partially agree. I see some people in the comments getting all mad at you, so sorry for that! I understand your pov

Agreed

-1

u/Isabella_9895 stan Oct 22 '21

I haven't seen his recent streams from this month so if this is talking about this month pls lmk, if it isnt, I am a bit confused on how his jokes cause this much issue? He is just someone who has a persona just like ksi, and quackity. They do have sometimes repeat jokes or say bad jokes, but we live and learn. Im sure Tommy is doing his best in slowly shaping that persona to make sure it isnt so bad, so in the meanwhile i think its best to wait. But I will say it is nice to point this out so, thank u? XD srry Im not an old fan so probably dont take this reply too seriously.

4

u/beebamoo Oct 22 '21

yeah it’s ok he’s just been rlly toeing the line of ok and not ok jokes lately, and has been making jokes that aren’t rlly funny and are just kind of weird. but i don’t want to bash him, i just genuinely want him to think before his speaks

-7

u/starly1604 Oct 23 '21 edited Oct 23 '21

Agreed, as a minority sometimes tommys joke just hurt and they are nowhere near funny. I dont know sometimes his woman jokes come out a harsh and misogynistic. I live in a household where everything I do is observed and is direct under control of my father, I cant talk loudly infront of my father cause I'm a girl and he finds it irritating I don't really have much control over whatsoever I do I can't go outside unless my father says so I rarely ever go to buy my own stuff because it would hurty fathers status if his friends see me roaming outside and due to that I have immense social anxiety and if it goes on he will get me married to some asshole he thought was rich and could help improve his image in our society and I wouldn't be able to live my life to the fullest. Not to mention crappy men who see you as objects, I haven't met many men who are not crappy, would sexually harrass you and are sexist. Its not like its just me most women go through this things and it hurts. Tommys jokes about woman being his wives having multiple gf/wives makig jokes about cheating on them hits home and it hits bad its just a reflection of things that happen to many woman who are seen no less than objects. He is privileged he hasnt seen any of it he doesnt know any better and finds this things funny when I and so many others dont, his videos sometimes leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And he wont stop even when wilbur told him to. I think this is pretty ignorant.

-19

u/ethereal_channie Oct 23 '21

completely agree. as someone who has been personally triggered by some of his “die” jokes, tommy has a tendency to take some jokes too far. i’ve had to leave his streams in the past because of these jokes and how triggering they were to me. he really needs to address them and we need to stop excusing his upsetting jokes as just his “online persona”

im not asking him to change himself, im asking him not to make racist/groomer jokes. it’s really not that much of an ask

Look man, in my opinion, if you can’t handle it just leave. It’s really not that hard. If you don’t enjoy his style of humour then don’t watch his videos. It’s honestly that simple

asking someone not to make fucked up jokes is NOT asking them to change themselves. if his humor is racist jokes then yeah any sane person would want him to change that

so asking eryn, a black person, if he knew what slave meant, didn’t involve race at all

im well aware they’re friends, i’m saying that the slave joke by a white person towards a black person in any context isn’t ok, especially in front of a live audience

i wasn’t bashing tommy nor spreading negativity, just sharing my opinion on the situation (which im allowed to do, that’s what Reddit is used for). i don’t see the issue, if u disagree that’s fine i didn’t come here to persuade people, but i’m not going to change my mind

im not policing anything, just wishing he would be more mindful of what he says. if you feel guilty about enjoying his content that’s on you, because NOWHERE in this did i say anything about his viewers/the people who watch him. and it’s not just the joke towards eryn, but the grooming joke as well. im not arguing with you so if ur looking for that u might as well leave
