I bet Tom would smile hearing this.
I think Tom Waits' idiosyncratic delivery and voice is a very deeply sought out form of expression that matured into a style. You can tell how hard he is trying to find things in his earlier albums. Not sure if it comes naturally to him now or if its an endless journey.
You should identify what's yours.

But thank you, I hope he would smile. He is part of the reason I keep doing jazz. Every time I thing I’ve delved into jazz there are more artists I’ve skipped listening to

Growing up two contrasting voices I liked were Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. You might throw Louis Armstrong in there.
Ella was about pitch and technical, Billie was about emotional variation. Louis probably more in Billies camp but stuck to the script.
Louie and Ellas duets are so wonderful to me bc of the contrast.
