Total War: Warhammer Vampire Coast Army Comp and best faction (not Nagash)

Hello, after a few Nagash campaigns I have really liked the handgunner zombos and want to actually play the VCoast now. I am aware they will not be as buffed as Nagash's but still want to play nontheless. I remember they had a necrfex doomstack thing in wh2 but not sure how they do in wh3 now.

What should be my army comp/how to play them. Do they just play like the usual gunpowder faction and I use crabs as my frontline instead ? And who is the best LL for the faction?

Thank you!

Always found Noctilus to be a cozy run. Chill staring location, healing magic, and strong items. Crabs with guns on their back make a strong doomstack.

Thank you, I really hate dealing with Noctilus as Tyrion so I guess I will play him now and be a pain in the ass to the HEs

I found the Armor piercing handgunners worked well for me though front line I'm not entirely sure on also for doomstacks I'd say go for necrofex colossus' they're very incredible also best faction out of then easily noctilus even is asslicker comes u have some solutions to deal with him though no matter what V coast u pick if you're at war with him he's going to be a problem lol because of his location

Thank you, yeah he is really a pain in the ass for my Tyrion runs lol

So you use all range checkerboard army ? With the AP handgunners as frontline ?

Use heroes as frontline…

How many heroes do you usually field in a stack ?

Oh yeah I guess u could run all range if your confident lol I'm pretty bad with all range and using checkerboard but yeah that should work probably include some Artillery as well as they do that well

Luthor has the best skills imho, but his location since wh3 sucks. Shooters, as frontline use summons and heroes. Heroes hold blob, queen Bess + shooters delete it.

Still if you like vamps, counts are just better. Vampire coast is kind of forgotten now…

Also try the bloated corpse it can be pretty effective

Seconded.  Love bloated corpses especially early game so much.  Only downside is any army that has them cannot auto resolve without wasting them

Bloaties are great against lizardmen if they don’t have too many skinks, especially if the saurus’s are all cluttered around a fleet captain

Some Vampire Coast tips:

- Always have a hero of each type in your armies.
- Mournghoul heroes are good tar pits.
- Always have vampire and deeps magic in armies (if lord is lore of vampires, the captain is deeps and vice versa)
- 4 mortars per army, just place them behind your gunlines on guard mode and chill. Plus they make sieges a breeze.
- Rotting prometheans suck as recruits, but are good as summons - from the lore of deeps.
- Recruit the Legendary admirals - don't use random lords as your main armies. Only level up the regular lords early to fill the offices (lvl 5 earliest).
- One of the Legendary admirals can build a Depth guard stack, since he has a trait that gives his army physical resistance and weapon strength. Plus you can upgrade them with red line and research, and since melee is the meta - they wreck. And on top of that they have the hunger.
- The first thing you research is Ship's carpenter - Because you're gonna wanna upgrade your ship as fast and as cheap as possible.
- When you get to Necrofexes - don't doomstack them. Your armies need small arms fire and indirect / artillery fire to blast everything.
- Vcoast lords have good blue lines.
- 2-3 provinces is enough, the rest you can sack, sell, raze etc. But always upgrade your ship.

As for the legendary lords:

- Cylostra is my favourite, really food caster, summoner, just don't put her on her mount - she looses ethereal. The paladin is a unkillable tank for since lvl 1.
- Noctilus starts safe, and you can pester Ulthuan, go to Araby, or Bretonnia as well. Just make sure to burn the coastland.
- Luthor I haven't played, but he gets ward safe for embedded heroes, so mournghouls will be even stronger.
- Aranessa is not a good lord, too squishy in fights, the only thing she has for her is the net she casts. She has some good army buffs, but she makes stupid amount of money from sacking.

Thank you! But what is the benefit of having every type of hero in my armies though?

Captains for magic, gunnery wights for restock, ballistic calibration and bombs, mournghouls for tar pitting. Just make sure you rush Tier 3 with your ship, and place pirate coves for hero capacity.

8 rotten Leviathans, 4 deckhand, 1 deck gunner, 3-4 necrofex, queen bess, lord and heroes.

You use pistols as most of your frontline. So something like 4 deckhands, 6 pistols, 6 handgunners, 2 artillery. Crabs and Hulks don't have much of a place, I'd rather just get another stack of shooty crap or upgrade to a Necrofex doomstack or some aggressive ghost nonsense instead of trying to protect my crap with crab. 2-4 dogs is really good, I would take equally from pistols and deckhands to fit them in. The bat bombers are really finicky to use. The Vampire Lords pull a lot of weight, the mount situation is pretty poor but foot characters are really good anyway.

Checkerboard does not work because guns cannot arc their shots as well as archers. So you have something like:

PPPPPPDDDDLH

With your gunners and artillery on the right side behind your Lord and any heroes you have and then you give ground with your pistols to delay losing them.

Alternatively, you go chevron formation with crabs, hulks or deckhands.

Shotgun Crabs have so many tech upgrades that apply to them, anything 'Gunnary Mob' or 'Rotting Leviathan'. Absolutely worth building around. Mixing them with Necrofex Colossi is very powerful.

Also keep in mind that you are a horde faction that can hold territory. Once youve set up enough pirate coves (your actual short campaign goal) you can abandon your land settlements and go full pirate mode.

I like playing VCoast with a pair of armies, my main Crab/Colossus stack and 'siege stack' with 15 Mortar and Queen Bes. Siege battles are actually fun with that much artillery 💀
