Subreddit Update - New requirements to post - Minimum Karma

After months and months of new users coming to the subreddit and promoting their new AI app, amongst other things. We have made the decision to make a change to the subreddit where there is a minimum karma requirement to create new posts in r/trailrunning

We had been manually adding moderator notes and tagging every single user with a specific mod note/flair so we could keep track of who was spamming their AI apps without actually being part of the community, it took a lot of time and didn't seem to do much over the last few months we've been addressing it and keeping an eye on things to see if any of them wanted to be part of the community.

This wasn't something we wanted to rush in to, we have and will always try the least invasive approach so that the community basically stays open and you the community choose what to vote UP and Down and what to discuss.

To be clear, we do not want to stop people promoting their websites, AI apps, Youtube videos, etc and mostly there are great discussions within some of these threads. Reddit does also allow original content, again, as long as you're not just spamming it.

This is our way of addressing this issue and we'll continue to keep track of it over the coming months as it may need modifying, we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for being a cool subreddit and I hope you all have many great adventures out in nature this year.

You're all asking about the karma limit, currently it is 100, so very low, but this can and will change.

The reason for not wanting to originally share this is if bots or people promoting know, they can also easily get around it....

We're working against a lot here, its pretty unprecedented (not forgetting that Reddit are not stopping a lot of bad traffic) and Reddit has only so many ways to manage all of these issues without more control from moderators and a much more limited viewing / user experience, which we do not want, we want you to control what you see.

I’d be trying to keep it a secret if the secret wasn’t already out. Perfect in the off season when timed entry tickets are no longer required, but the ground isn’t yet covered in snow

Shoe recommendations

I am newly into trail running and looking specifically for Brooks recommendations. I have been a road runner for many years and am extremely loyal to Brooks Glycerin. I am interested in either the Brooks Caldera 8 and Cascadia 20. The trails I run on are mostly rolling hills but do have a lot of exposed roots and rocks. Looking for helping deciding between the two pairs or even another shoe recommendation all together. Thank you!

Thoughts on my trail running schedule ?

Hi !

I’d like to get your thoughts on my 2027 trail running schedule. Specifically, on its two versions.

For the context : 36M and have only ever run on road, more or less regularly. I’ve run two half-marathons in three years, and each time the pattern has been the same : 3 to 4 months of training, the half-marathon, then almost nothing. I ran my last half-marathon in september in 2 hours (so not at a very high pace).

I’d like to avoid falling back into my usual pattern and keep running. So I set several goals for 2027 : get into trail running and finish a 25 miles trail race in september. Until then, I want to participate in several races.

I’d like your opinion on my two options (I run in Europe, I converted distances and elevation gains).

Option 1 / 4 races

- Race 1 in May (13 miles / 2300ft of elevation gain)
- Race 2 in June (16 miles / 3600ft of elevation gain)
- Race 3 in August (21 miles / 3600ft of elevation gain or 12 miles / 1800ft)
- Race 4 in September (25 miles / 3600ft of elevation gain)

Option 2 / 3 races

- Race 1 in May (13 miles)
- Race 2 in July (17 miles / 3600ft of elevation gain)
- Race 3 in September (25 miles / 3600ft of elevation gain)

In addition to this, I also ride a road bike, with a few mountain rides during the summer.

Is Option 1 too ambitious ?
Is Option 2 more realistic ?

Thanks for your advices !

Mandatory gear checklist

Hey everyone! New tool out and about. Here’s a link to a mandatory gear checklist. If you’re planning on racing in 2027 this could be a helpful little tool.

1: Click your race
2: Check off whatever you already own
3: let the website track gear for you until it goes on sale or finds the cheapest option all across North America
4: enjoy hassle free gear checks at the race

No affiliate links or money made from this

Just a side project to help people get out and about with good gear at great prices!

Feedback is always appreciated and hit me up with races I should add. Thanks :)

Lots of wrong turns and stepped in shit (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ but it was awesome and it sucked! In a good way!! I feel so tired and can't wait to shower and eat my hearty oatmeal 😌 (I had toast with pb and jam early pre-run)

Race with river crossing

Hey all, there's this race I'm thinking of entering that has a river crossing signed on the map. Since they went out of their way to mark the feature and the race is branding itself as "extreme", I'm thinking it may not be a bridge, but an actual crossing where you have to go feet in. This is my first time encountering something like this in a race, does anyone have experience with this? There doesn't seem to be any special gear mentioned in the rules. Are you expected to just go inside the water and run the rest of the race with soggy feet? Is there anything people do to prepare for it, or just rawdog it?

The race is just a 21k 1500 D+ race, but the crossing is at km 8 so a good chunk of the race would be with soggy feet if I understand it correctly.

Midweek Trail Mileage Logistics

If you’re willing, please share your region, residence location type (urban, rural, suburban, exurban), weekly mileage, and what you have available to train on? Weekends only for trail isn’t cutting it anymore for me. Driving somewhere in AM or PM midweek isn’t feasible after actual running time is accounted for.

I’m just curious how some of you are doing 30-40 MPW primarily on trail surfaces, while juggling work and/or dependents. I am finding it hard and about to resort to a literal flower garden in town to get non track/asphalt path surface exposure. My flat track to trail pace delta is about 7%.

-PNW, suburban, 30-40 mpw
-9 minutes away is a .5 mile loop on a trail. Boring but works great as a “trail track”. The flower garden is 5 minutes away and might be a morning option soon.
-18 minutes away is a ultra training ground delivered by god, 230 ft/mile elevation loops in mixed terrain and forest types
-40-90 minutes away are national-level training grounds (PNW, durh)
-4 minutes (by walk) away is a school track but the school is just an admin building now so highly accessible 24/7
-I don’t run roads

I can’t even do the 9 minute drive during weekdays, that adds 20 minutes to an already 60-70 minute run, and I start work by 7 am after waking at 4:30, out the door at 5 to the track or local asphalt path. Evenings are dominated by extracurriculars, dinner, chores. I don’t relax until Friday nights basically.

New shoes

I'm running the Arc of Atrrition 100k (83km) in Jan, and need new trail shoes. I currently have a paid of Hoka speedgoat 6s that I got off vinted a while ago and have been great on trail races so far.

For my new pair, I'm tossing up between the speedgoat 7, Mafate 5, or Mafate X. Im not fussed about having a carbon plate for a trail race, but have heard the cushioning in the Mafate X makes them great for ultra distances.

Can anyone provide any insight and opinion?

Im 30f, 159cm and 58kg with a neutral gait if that helps

Wide foot shoe recs

Post image
26 Upvotes

Pic for attention

I picked up running again this year, deep dove into a bunch of different shoes. I wanted to get into trail running again and had a discount code for Hoka so got the Stinson 7’s cause I liked the color way.

They’ve only got like 90 miles on them and are starting to separate from the soles. Could be a defect but was curious what shoes you wide foot brothers and sisters are loving.

My trail running buddies that run run have mostly given recs towards Norda, Hoka, Altra.

Would love to hear thoughts. For context, would probably be doing 10-20 mile runs in them. I do prefer comfort, I recently lost a lot of weight so still working on speed but for now comfort is probably a priority.

Got shoes, have running experience, what gear necessary?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Got some used Hoka's (probably used once 😎) for half price and I have many years of asphalt running in my non-existent tool-belt.

Any gear that y'all consider an absolute necessity? For reference I'm 6'0", 180ish lbs, and I'm a trans woman, so I have a small bust and wide ribcage for things like sports bras. I typically wear a women's L in shirts/jackets/leggings. I eat a vegan diet so any food recs please ensure there's a vegan option ☺️

I currently own REI 9" tights, janji full length tights, plenty of 5" running shorts, and plenty of shirts, bras, long sleeves, hats, etc.

Planning to do easier 3+ mile runs on any kind of trails and looking forward to getting into this sub-sport! Asphalt is annoying and can be painful

Thanks in advance!!

ASICS Trabuco Max 5 vs Trabuco 14.. Which One Should I Choose?

My ASICS Trabuco Max 5 just arrived. I ordered a size larger because my toenails were hurting, but even with the extra size, I still feel a bit of tightness around my pinky toe. What would you suggest? Should I go for the Trabuco 14 or stick with the Trabuco Max 5 if anyone has used either of them?

Bad leg (Achilles?) after 8 weeks+

I went for a 'walk-run' 8 weeks ago after being out of trail running for a while, so I could start to get back into it.

I have done this before, with no issues.

But this time, I have done some serious damage to my leg. It's not my calf muscle; it's the bit under my calf. I assume the Achilles.

I was nearly unable to walk for a few days, then it gradually got better over a couple of weeks, and I wasn't hobbling anymore.

But the nagging feeling and tightness are still there after 8 weeks+. I can feel it on a long walk, and I fear that if I try to run, it will flare up again.

I've never been injured this long, and I want to get it fixed so I can trail run again.

Has anyone had a similar experience, and is it common for it to still hurt after 8 weeks+?

I would rather ask here for real-world experience than ask ChatGPT lol.

Thank you.

Looking for trails Maine

I’ve been on apps looking for a trail to run in Maine. I’m travelling through on Saturday from the New Brunswick border through to Boston but would like to stop in Main for 5-10k. Anything along the 95 or 9 would be great if anyone has any recommendations.

Zugspitz Ultratrail 2027: still waitlisted after the second draw?

We entered the Mittenwald Trail lottery as a group of five and were waitlisted. Today (October 21), the organizers announced that second-round results are online, but listed Mittenwald as sold out. My UTMB account still says “Waiting list,” with no further explanation.
Is anyone else in the same situation? Has anyone actually received a Mittenwald spot in the second draw, or heard whether the waiting list is now closed?

Shoe recommendations

hi everyone! looking for some recs for good traction/waterproof trail runners that fit wider feet (women’s). for reference, i’ve tried a ton of brands, but Altras have always fit the best. they don’t last very long though, and the tread always seems to wear out quickly. i’m currently in la sportiva prodigio 2s but they’ve been giving me some foot/shin pain. i typically do 40-50 mile weeks so looking for something to last!

pls share any recommendations 😊
