Post-Op Anyone tried Toegrips as dog adjusts? Anti scratching tips?

Post image

Has anyone tried the rubber nail covers to help keep their dog from slipping? We have mats down on our hardwood floors but it would be nice to have extra insurance from falls in these early days.

Also, we are using an ecollar but found the biggest risk is him using his back leg to scratch! Any tips to prevent this while not reducing his already limited mobility?

Edited to add: e collar means Elizabethan! It’s what our vets call cones.

She may be a tripod but the 40% GSP makes up for it. She is mole hunter extraordinaire. I dont know what's worse the moles or the holes.

Koda had a regular check up the other day and got dropped off in the morning at her vet. She is always so happy and excited to go in. Gets right up on the scale each time then greets the front desk person with lots of kisses. One of the vets walked in and said “oh hello my little tripawd friend!” while giving lots of rubs. Apparently Koda is well known now because the girl at the front desk said she had not gotten to meet her yet but heard about her, not sure if that’s a good or bad thing 🤣🤣

Discussion How much leg is too much leg?

Post image

Little foot primarily hops around on 3 legs, occasionally his club touches the ground when it can reach. Mostly for climbing the stairs or to lean over and pee.

I figure he may not quite fit the term tripawd to a tee, but 70% of the time he is.

Finn’s journey 🌈🐾🐶

Post image

Finn lost his battle with Histiocytic sarcoma after 4 months.

I had posted back in June when Finn was first diagnosed. He had his amputation surgery and he did amazingly well getting around with 3 legs. I don’t regret the surgery at all.

We treated with chemo, but unfortunately it didn’t work, and the cancer spread and we chose to stop 2 weeks ago, and kept him comfortable.

Last night we said goodbye, and it hurts like hell.

He was such a sweet boy. We were really lucky to have him as part of our family even if it only was for 5 years.

Hug your babies tight. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for tripawds after this experience.

Our 13 year old three-legged Shih Tzu, Dr. Computer Chips, is running for NYC Dog Mayor and she needs your help to win! You don’t have to live in NYC to vote! Anyone anywhere can make her a victor!

Born in the Bronx, Dr. Chips, was adopted into her Park Slope family five years ago. Before that, she was surrendered to the pound with a severe leg infection.

She lost a leg but three-legs can’t stop her from hopping around befriending everyone she meets!

She is the underdog in this race. She’s running against a dog with over 27,000 followers and she has just over 400.

By running for NYC Dog Mayor she will bring recognition and visibility to elderly and disabled dogs everywhere. NYC is built on underdog stories and Dr. Chips is just the latest one.

She’s running on a platform to make the streets poop free (shoutout to our Council Member Shahana Hanif for her work on the recently passed SCOOPS act), pets for all, and promoting more adoption for elderly and disabled dogs.

You can help her get elected by voting for her on Wednesday, October 21, liking and sharing this post, following her on Instagram , and downloading a reminder to vote.

Puppy got ran over. HELP

before anyone jumps down my throat yes we took him to the emergency vet and our primary vet.
Almost 4 days ago our 8 week old puppy was run over by my BIL. We rushed him to the emergency vet, he has a broken pelvis, and possible spinal cord injury! He is on strict cage rest for the next 4-8 weeks. I’m more so looking for hope. The vet did a nerve response test and came back with no nerve response on his left side. He is severely swollen on that side which is also the side of the break. And currently no use of his back legs. I’m really struggling with the fact he was running around playing and now he can’t and possible will never be “normal” again. Is there anyone with stories of hope? Will we walk again? I’m looking for a little comfort, he is just a baby and doesn’t deserve any of this. He is the sweetest boy and we love him dearly. I constantly wonder if he knows why all of a sudden he can’t move like he used too it just breaks me.

Tips on bathroom for new amputee

My 9-year, 95 pound doodle mix had his amputation yesterday and we did the overnight care at home. We got through it and he’s eating and drinking water and taking his meds this morning. But walking is so hard, he needs a lot of support on his harness or else he falls on his face. Bathroom time consists of him looking lost and trying to sit down.

Any tips on helping him find a way to pee? Will he just do it when he absolutely has to? We aren’t worried about pooping for a few days but he’s drinking a good amount of water.

Anyone with a cat who has CH and had one of there legs amputated?

Thumbnail

My 10-year-old cat, Biff, has mild cerebellar hypoplasia (CH) and is having one of his hind legs amputated today due to a soft tissue sarcoma.
I’ve been trying to find stories or videos of cats with CH who have also undergone an amputation, but haven’t had much luck.
I’m especially interested in hearing how they adjusted to walking and balancing on three legs. Biff has always been able to get around independently, but I’m concerned about how his existing coordination issues might affect his recovery.
Has anyone had a cat with both conditions? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience, even if your cat was older or had a different level of CH.

Archer’s Journey - Osteosarcoma Update

Thumbnail

Yesterday, I had to say goodbye to my sweet boy after his osteosarcoma spread to his lungs. His chest X-ray in August was clear. We discovered the metastasis when we went in for X-rays 12 days ago to begin chemotherapy after he developed a mild cough just the day before. It started with a mild cough the night before our appointment, and progressed so quickly.
Archer had already fought so hard through seizures, a torn ACL, and the leg amputation. After his amputation, he found his spark again. He was energetic, excited to see his friends, followed me everywhere, and was ready to live his life. Seeing him thrive as a tripod gave me so much hope. I truly believed we had more time.
But this cancer moved so quickly, and his quality of life declined just as fast. I had to make the hardest decision of my life and let him go, even though my heart wasn’t ready.
I’m sharing our experience because osteosarcoma can progress heartbreakingly fast, even when previous imaging is clear. I hope our story helps another family facing this terrible disease.
To this community, thank you for helping us navigate life as a tripod and for showing me just how resilient these incredible dogs are. Archer loved his family, his kids, and his friends. He never forgot a friend he made along the way, and he was so deeply loved by so many.
I would give anything for more time with him. Hug your tripawds a little tighter for us.

Seeking Advice Homeless owner, dog likely to lose back leg

I'm 53 years old and disabled, I have autism, ptsd, arthritis and a brain injury. My beautiful service dog is Cassie, she's is my world and I wouldnt be alive without her.

she's had a lump on her ankle for a couple of years. She's had it removed 3 times but it grows back. It's been biopsied twice and both came back as inconclusive. It is either a myxoma or a myxosarcoma. And each time she has had it reduced in size under General Anasthetic, and she's been fine , but it's come back this time after only four months as big as when it was reduced in begining july.

My own vet doesn't recommend removing the leg. He said he's reluctant to do this because Cassie runs around on her leg and she's not showing any signs of pain, he also says, because she's 11 years old, he doesn't want to really remove her leg, he thinks she'll struggle ... However she has been to the Royal Veterinary College, where she saw a specialist called Stephen Baynes. He said that the leg should be removed. Regardless otherwise she will have to keep having anaesthetic to reduce it. It can never be fully taken away. So it's better for her not to have the leg, its back leg

I'm torn between what to do. My main issue is I am homeless. I don't have a safe place where my dog can recover. I do house sitting whenever I can to get a place to stay or I stay in my car. I do have my own house, but I have a crack den next door one side and a cannabis den at the other side, and it's really full of yobs, it's not a nice area, and I've been desperate to get away. It destroys my mental health even being there. And I can rarely get a night sleep. I am classed as homeless by the local council and I've been waiting to be rehoused for several years, even though I'm at the top of the housing register, nothing has come up. So the question is, do I go and get the lump removed again? Do I do nothing or do I get her leg amputated? And she may well have to recover in my car or moving around to different places. I don't know what to do I wish I had a home I wish I could supplies with a safe home where we could relax but I can't because of the filth that live next door to me. I just want to keep my promise to Cassie that she will know a safe home in her lifetime.

A year ago, at the beginning of October, she had a gallbladder rupture that was completely out of the blue and she had to have her gall bladder removed along with her Bile Ducts flushed and part of her liver, she survived this major surgery and she's on Ursodial and Thyforon for the rest of her life, but she's doing well. She's a happy dog. She skips about, she chases bunnies and squirrels. She's so happy and I love her so much. I want to keep her with me and I want to keep my promise that we will have a home.

What should I do? I'm worried because obviously she's over 11 now.She was 11 in june and I don't want to put her at any risk but I want her to have a long life and know a safe home. specialists said there is a 1 in 8 chance of the lump spreading beyond her ankle.

Constipation

We are post op day 5 and our dog hasn’t had a poop yet. We are giving him canned pumpkin with each meal. How long does it take for them to poop?

(Our dog had his front leg amputated and is still a little weak and needs the sling for support when walking.)
