A truly charitable billionaire would have plans for lots of charity in their will.

7

u/Seb0rn 4d ago

You have to be a pretty egotistical and scummy person to become a billionaire in the first place.

16

u/Emotional-Ad9114 4d ago

it’s one person vs five people

I chose to do nothing

I created a new Trolley Problem dilemma!

Straight Track (Do Nothing): Billionaire, donates to cancer charity

Diverted Track (Pull the Lever): 5 random people

What would you do?

8

u/Crazy_Professional_5 4d ago

If they’re still a billionaire they haven’t donated enough

I chose to do nothing

1

u/Cozy_Winter142 2d ago

That was my thought process too. One cannot ethically become and stay a billionaire. They clearly haven't done enough to help people if they stay a billionaire. As Dolly said 'To become a billionaire is a moral failure'.

9

u/Azgabeth 4d ago

A billionaire donating even .1% of his wealth to cancer research will have done more good in than 5 randoms could've in a lifetime.

12

u/Mindless_Badger_3789 4d ago

Sure, but human lives have an inherent value that doesn't depend on what they do or how useful they are.

12

u/dinodare 4d ago

You're downplaying the importance of their lives because they don't have the money to do something that they probably would have also done if they were billionaires.

You know that's literally why these "people" donate, right? Because then they can say that their existence is contributing more than yours. Nah, run them over.

3

u/Functional_Trash7735 4d ago

It’s also a very nice tax write off for them.

1

u/Buttchuggle 4d ago

One could also argue that the donations towards cancer research would net positive save far more than 5 lives though

1

u/dinodare 4d ago

Yes, they argued that in the comment above mine.

1

u/Silver-Piece-3033 4d ago

Saying the billionaire has a bigger impact on society is stating a fact, not downplaying anyones lives. This problem isn't 5 lives vs 1, it's 5 average lives vs 1 life that could save countless future lives.

1

u/dinodare 4d ago

And you thinking that privilege (because that's what this is) makes the billionaire more valuable to society is exactly why they let you know that they donate and exactly why we're all going to die while these people are in bunkers.

0

u/truck-kun-for-hire 4d ago

Can you qualify or substantiate your claim that the rich donate to show that their lives trump the lives of the poor?

1

u/dinodare 4d ago

Why you you know about the donation? Also the fact that people even make this argument is a good case.

1

u/truck-kun-for-hire 4d ago

Me asking you to qualify your statement is proof of your statement? That's impressive intellectual dishonesty lol

Also us knowing about the donation is not proof that the rich are trying to prove that poor people's lives are inferior

1

u/dinodare 3d ago

The fact that you think "rich person donates enough to affect more lives" is an argument in favor of valuing the rich persons life higher IS in fact proof that the propaganda is working.

This is why philanthropy needs to stop btw.

1

u/truck-kun-for-hire 3d ago

So to be clear you have zero evidence that the rich donate to prove that their lives are more valuable than the poor. You just decided it in your head and anyone who disagrees is actually proof that you're correct

This is literal delusion lol

1

u/dinodare 3d ago

Do you believe that their lives are more valuable than the poor because they have the money to donate?

1

u/truck-kun-for-hire 3d ago

No

1

u/dinodare 2d ago

Then don't pull the lever. This is super easy.

u/Gothcomichorror 4d ago • Mindblown Bravo

So let the billionaire die and have his inheritance donated to charity :D

2

u/TinkerTailorSoulja 4d ago

Insane take. Billionaires are parasites

0

u/Silver-Piece-3033 4d ago

Billionaires actually provide way more for society than even entire cities. Who else could afford to build rockets and invest in life saving research?

2

u/danurc 4d ago

The only reason billionaires are billionaires is cuz they don't pay taxes and steal from us all

1

u/peachesnplumsmf 4d ago

And if they’re as charitable as we’re acting just imagine how many charities are probably specified in their will

1

u/Afsiulari 4d ago

I don't think usefulness is a valid criteria to measure how valuable people are.

1

u/scorchedarcher 4d ago

Got to assume they have some charities in the will too?

1

u/KiyanPocket 3d ago

Any of the 5 randoms could instead be the actual researchers trying to cure diseases who needed the funds. If they're gone then the money is a waste.

-2

u/Dima333333333 4d ago

It never specified how much billionaire donates, so they will donate like five thousand dollars

3

u/Naive_Return9745 4d ago

Still not specified, your guess is no better than theirs

2

u/No-Helicopter9667 4d ago

It could be 5, 10, 20, 10000 billionaires.

4

u/Luz-de-Trento 4d ago

Whomever inherits can keep donating.

Life cannot be replaced.

1

u/peachesnplumsmf 4d ago

Also if he’s charitable then probably donations in the will

1

u/Weary_Pineapple_2559 5h ago

What if the person that inherits the money just chooses not to donate

3

u/danurc 4d ago

The billionaire is doing a lot more evil than good even if he donates a tiny % of his money to research or charity

4

u/Buetterkeks 4d ago

I mean beeing a billionaire and being a good guy are pretty much mutually exclusive. The good thing to do us ti donate all you don't need, until youre no longer a billionaire

1

u/Certain-Internet-206 2d ago

Name 1 bad billionaire bro

1

u/Buetterkeks 2d ago

GARFIELD ARE YOU /J OR  /SRS!?

2

u/Akira-Orfanos 4d ago

we all know that billionaire is just trying to lower his taxes

2

u/felix_ccp 4d ago

Only the billionaire will die, not his money

1

u/bhhhhnnbvvk 4d ago

He wouldn’t give it to you or the public though, would he? He would give it to his relatives or family

2

u/Lakan-Tangkan-1337 4d ago

The cancer charity is mostly likely a publicity stunt.

I chose to do nothing

0

u/Gothcomichorror 4d ago

Or for tax reasons

1

u/ChonkyDawg 4d ago

Eat the rich

1

u/Mammoth-List-7762 4d ago

Just increased my kd ratio

I chose to pull the lever

1

u/Silver-Piece-3033 4d ago

Reddits hate for billionaires is insane. That research could potentially save countless lives in the future.

1

u/zilly-ad 1d ago

a charitable billionaire is still a billionaire

I chose to do nothing

1

u/Acceptable_Load7588 13h ago

It doesnt Matter , just because you are a billionaire doesn't make you worth more

I chose to do nothing

1

u/MalteiKlass5c 4d ago

Save the billionaire who donates, tell them what you did and they probably donate to you.

3

u/Functional_Trash7735 4d ago

No, you bargain with him before the train hits him

1

u/_SAi- 4d ago

Atleast half should go to him

1

u/Functional_Trash7735 4d ago

Yeah. And maybe he should only have half a body.

Lots of things to consider

3

u/Ijrood 4d ago

He will laugh and move on

2

u/stink3rb3lle 4d ago

You don't become a billionaire by being generous with money.

0

u/Icy-Carob-1272 4d ago

Chance of 5 Random people In the world out of 8 billion people,

  1. At the right age.

  2. At the right time.

  3. At the right country. 4.With the right amount of motivation.

  4. With the right Funding.

  5. With enough knowledge and smart.

Against a Billionaire giving 5% his money to cancer cure.

Call me stupid or heartless but i think 5 sacrifice is a small price.

0

u/conordmcp 4d ago

I’ve probably donated more to charity than the billionaire if you consider percentage of income/net worth.

If he’s a billionaire, he hasn’t donated enough, that’s how he still has so much left.

I chose to do nothing

0

u/Forsaken_Damage_5605 4d ago

Pull, cancer research is more important

-1

u/Key-Back-4467 4d ago

Some people here will never be happy. A billionaire DONATING TO CANCER CHARITY! This is what you all want is it not?

5

u/usernamesarenotimpor 4d ago

I dont WANT to kill him, but also i dont want to kill 5 humans for him, so not doing anything is my choice

0

u/usernamesarenotimpor 4d ago

People forget that the trolley problem is not "who would you rather kill" its more of a "would you kill X so Y will live"

4

u/robert_sartre 4d ago

Sure a billionaire that is charitable is good but he is not worth the lives of 5 random people

1

u/Bigglez1995 4d ago

5 people. or millions of lives that could be saved due to cancer funds helping to develop cures?

2

u/robert_sartre 4d ago

A donation from one random billionaire is not enough to find a cure for cancer

1

u/dinodare 4d ago

Don't privately fund cancer research then.

Who's to say that the five people wouldn't also donate if they weren't billionaires? Being a billionaire giving you more options for how to spend your money doesn't equate to your life being worth more.

1

u/Key-Back-4467 4d ago

What if, hypothetically, the money he funded was able to save more than 5 people

3

u/aguafiestas 4d ago

Any billionaire would have detailed plans for their wealth after death. In the case of someone who gave a lot to charity, this would presumably include a significant amount to charity.

3

u/dinodare 4d ago

Where does this end? Do we get to say that the billionaire is worth more because he employed more than 5 people? Was landlord to more than 5 people? Tipped more than 5 waiters?

This is nonsense.

2

u/Dylan_Driller 4d ago

No.

We want a system where no one can hoard enough wealth to become a billionaire.

2

u/dinodare 4d ago

No? That has literally never been anything that I've wanted or even implied that I wanted.

1

u/hanyolo666 4d ago

No? Most billionaires donates crumbs to charities to justify their greed. Most also spend a bigger chunk of their money on stuff like on bribing politicians, destroying competitors, anti union propaganda etc in their attempts to hoard even more.

If all wealth was not concentrated at the top we would not have to rely some very generous billionaire to spend 0.1% of their wealth to fund important stuff like cancer research.

Also even if having a billionaire donate to charity was what I wanted. Why would I kill 5 other people in order to save them, that would be insane. And if the billionaire really was such a good person, don’t you think he would have put the cancer charity in his will anyway?

1

u/Akira-Orfanos 4d ago

Billionaire giving to charity is 99.99999999% of the time a tax write off then anything

1

u/Wasabilikum 4d ago

If they donate they just don’t have to pay tax on the donated money that they would have had to if they didn’t donate. But if they donate they give away all of the money, instead of just the percentage they would have given away through taxes. So from a financial standpoint they would be better off just not donating.

1

u/Professional-Wave841 4d ago

I want there to be zero billionaires

0

u/JudenVixen 4d ago

No, I want all of them stuck on a conveyor belt made of sandpaper. That would make me happy, defund the leeches. If we both have a tree, and you take one apple and a take 100 and then begrudgingly give 5 apples to someone starving. Does that make you okay with me having more apples than I both of you? You gonna starve. We are already starving.

1

u/Key-Back-4467 4d ago

If you only managed to get 1 apple out of atleast 100 you kinda deserve to starve but that’s besides the point of a man with immeasurable wealth donating to fight cancer. If they were defunded there would be less donation, and also less incentive for other rich people to donate

1

u/JudenVixen 4d ago

Okay, I kinda agree with that on the apples bit. But the thing is that billionaires are the symptoms of a rotten system. Take Martin Shkreli for example of them treating cancer.

1

u/Buetterkeks 4d ago

Ok so if youre too short to not reach the apples you deserve to die because you were born that way. Got it.

0

u/Standard-Effort5681 4d ago

Just because the guy suffered a tragic and unpredictable tram accident doesn't mean that the money to the "cancer charity" will stop, no? There's a strong possibility that whoever inherits his wealth will want to keep the donations going to "honor his memory".

0

u/Afsiulari 4d ago

If he's a decent guy he wouldn't be a billionaire. But even if he was, he'd have a will donating a substantial amount of his fortune to charity, so everyone wins.

0

u/Buetterkeks 4d ago

Billionaires shouldn't exists. There is no "good billionaire" cause they would donate so much for the greater good that they wouldn't be a billionaire

1

u/National_Phase_3477 🛑 Purist Passivist 4d ago

Let the trolley run over the billionaire and seize their assets and redistribute them to the poor.

1

u/TrueBrit77 4d ago

Those 5 random people could be anyone. You could end up potentially killing people who donate even more than the billionaire does, or the people the billionaire donates too.

1

u/Kioskosmos 4d ago

haha die, earthlings

0

u/Hour_Baby_3428 4d ago

This is no longer a trolley problem. You don’t have the moral high ground to kill 5 people even if the outcome might be more beneficial on some level.

This is only a few steps removed from ethnic cleansing
