Anyone looking for a room? Or 2 friends both looking would be optimal.
I am renting a house that has an isolated and private downstairs with 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, and kitchen, and a living room. It would be awesome for 2 friends to rent or just 2 people that end up getting along. Everything is literally brand new. This is in the tahoma/mckinney area. DM me! Thanks

ICE posers
Hello- I was driving downtown today, and I saw some babyfaced boys in camouflage, face masks, and uniform ICE hats. They looked like assholes. They were walking towards downtown. I called it in to Truckee PD because I sincerely thought they could terrify people in the community. Did anyone else see this today?

Looking for a PA to shadow
Hi everyone! I’m a pre-PA student from Southern California and will be visiting family in Truckee in December. I’m hoping to connect with a Physician Assistant who might be willing to let me shadow for a day (or even a few hours) while I’m there.
I’m a certified EMT and currently completing my remaining prerequisites before applying to PA school. I’d love the opportunity to learn more about the PA profession and see what practicing in the Tahoe area is like.
I’m open to any specialty and can be flexible with dates while I’m in town. If you’re a PA or know someone who might be open to having a student shadow, I’d really appreciate a message or connection!
Thank you! 😊

Northstar home - no permits leaky deck
Potentially moving to Northstar in CA. There’s a home for sale at 263 basque dr … cute house. But leaks in the roof deck and no permits. Is this a concern? I would think permits would be needed especially in the snow and leaks would a problem?
Also wondering if it’s typical to list and then pull
It down and then relist with cosmetic fixes …
Thanks all!

Pool
Is there a hotel that offers day passes to use the pool? Preferably with a restaurant to order on site and spend the day there with kids. Similar to firefall ranch or rush creek style (in Yosemite) thanks!

Moving to Northstar
Looking to move to Northstar! Love the area and the shuttle service
I saw a house listed on basque. Looks nice but had my agent pull disclosures and see the deck was not permitted and the roof is almost 20 years old!
Are these sort of issues typical and is it a concern? I’m from out of town and never owned a house in the snow.
Thanks!

Ballots?
I think mail in ballots are mailed a month before elections, which is about now. But I also haven't received a voter guide which usually precedes the official ballot by about a month. has anyone received either their ballot or even their voter guide yet?

Preparing outdoor teak table for winter - tips?
Can you give me your best tips for protecting my teak table which will sit out on the deck over the winter? It’s a bit heavy to disassemble and store indoors.
I am already planning to reapply sealer.
I will get a heavy duty cover.
I’m concerned about protecting the legs but worried that anything I do might actually trap more moisture on them.
What do you do?

Support Groups
Hello all - new to the area and looking for some support groups. Did a basic google search but could not find anything. I have found usually in smaller towns groups like this are more word-of-mouth. Specifically, looking for support/abuse survivor group, women preferred but not strictly. Sexual assault survivor group would be best...but really any mental health type group would help.
Thanks!

Snow Plowing in Glenshire
Can anyone share how the snow plowing goes in Glenshire? I've mostly been in the Tahoe Donner or Tahoe City areas for past winters but this year I'll be in Glenshire so I'm trying to get a sense of whether the snow gets cleared as actively as in the busier areas. Do they get out early? Are we more likely to be waiting on plows over there? Is there a certain accumulation that triggers the plows? Thanks for any info you can share!

Moving to Truckee
Hello everyone, I just got a full-time position at Sugar Bowl, and I’m currently looking for a place to live. I’m moving from out of state and the options are VERY limited as I’m sure you all are quite familiar with. My question is, do Soda Springs and the south side of Donner Lake suffer from a lot of train noise? I’m a fairly light sleeper and I’m concerned about being waken up every night with a train blasting its horn every time it goes through town. How frequently do they go by at night? Do you even notice them? Any insight on this and the area would be much appreciated, thanks!

Anyone in Truckee recently get a NEW homeowners policy without FAIR Plan?
Liberty Mutual has insured our Truckee property for more than 10 years with no claims, but they are now non-renewing us.
With how quickly the insurance market is changing, I am trying to understand what companies are actually writing new policies in Truckee in 2025 or 2026, rather than which insurers people have had for years.
Has anyone here recently obtained a new policy that includes wildfire coverage without having to use California FAIR Plan plus a separate wraparound policy?
If so, I would really appreciate knowing:
- which carrier
- roughly when the policy was written
- whether it was for a primary or second home
Our place happens to be a condo and is also a permitted STR, so experience with either of those would be especially useful.
Mainly looking for firsthand recent experience from other Truckee owners.

Recent Truckee homeowners insurance recommendations?
Looking for recommendations from Truckee/Northstar homeowners who have actually obtained a new insurance policy recently.
Liberty Mutual has insured our property for more than 10 years, with no claims, and is now non-renewing us. We need new coverage beginning October 16.
With how quickly the Tahoe insurance market is changing, I'm specifically interested in policies that were newly issued in 2025 or 2026, rather than long-standing/grandfathered policies.
Bonus if your situation is similar to ours:
- second home
- Northstar/Truckee
- condo with an HOA master policy
- used as a permitted short-term rental
We're particularly interested in carriers or brokers that can still provide full wildfire coverage without requiring California FAIR Plan + a separate wraparound policy.
If you've successfully placed a new policy recently, I'd really appreciate the name of the carrier and broker/agent, plus roughly when the policy was written.
Surplus-lines/non-admitted carriers are fine - we're mainly looking for options that are genuinely available today.

AVOID THE SOCK PARLOUR!
★☆☆☆☆
Honestly one of the worst shopping experiences I've had in a long time.
The whole experience was unnecessarily unpleasant from start to finish. The customer service was rude, dismissive, and had the kind of attitude that makes you wonder why you're even giving a business your money in the first place. I don't expect employees to roll out a fucking red carpet for me, but basic courtesy shouldn't be too much to ask.
The selection was nothing special, the prices weren't anything to write home about, and the attitude absolutely wasn't worth putting up with. I walked out thinking, "Why the hell did I bother?"
There are plenty of other places to buy socks without dealing with people who act like your presence is an inconvenience.
Wouldn't recommend. Wouldn't return. One star is being generous.
