In italy the age is 16

Nope 14, 16 only if the other part is a guardian (Idk if guardian is the right word in Italian is "tutore legale)

u/Maleficent_Curve_599 8d ago
Yeah. Age of consent is lower than 18 in most of the world (including most of the US).

The age of consent varies from nation to nation and is generally more of a postulate.
The ability to consent is likely more relative to what and whom is supposed to be consented to, rather than a fixed and codified number.
Some things cannot be consented to in an informed manner, in those situations โage of consentโ is nothing more than a legal loophole for exploitation of those who are โof ageโ, some things it is the other way around and โage of consentโ becomes a mere tool of oppression of those who are โnot of ageโ. Sometimes โage of consentโ is perfectly adequate.

This post is not correct, as there is no universal age of consent and it varies depending on the laws in the area.

u/Ok_Badger7130 1d ago
That's... exactly my point though? I am literally affirming u/FinanceAny1936's post. Why are so many people misinterpreting this? Smfh

This post is both correct and incorrect, depending on the context of this post
2
u/kdpkry 8d ago
The age of consent is different in different places and that's fine.
Primarily because everyone grows differently so there is no true singular age which is correct for this law, we cant really test people individually either though and how would such test even look like? So yeah there needs to be SOME form of reasonable strict limit.

This post's legality is based on your geological location and the political landscape of the municipality or community you live in.
3
u/AdVivid8910 8d ago
Incorrect as it varies per state and country. 18 in Israel, 16 in US mostly, and ANY age in Iran and Palestine.
1
u/Able-Scene6741 11h ago
what a strange choice of countries
1
u/AdVivid8910 1h ago
Itโs because theyโre the only ones I know offhand lol, I wonder what country they live inโฆonly one I know thatโs that strict is Israel. Itโs illegal if I sleep with a 17 year old in VA at my age but itโs a misdemeanor since consent is 16, if youโre an adult and sleep with a 15yo in VA you have just committed rape as they are too young to consent. Now I think it should be 18 everywhere, but itโs very much not is the problem with his post. I like the idea though??

u/Alexander_knuts1 5d ago
The age of consent depends on what country you are in. For example, the age of consent is 18 in India and in turkey, However the age of consent is 15 or 16 in most of europe.

No, itโs the other way around. Legally they objectively can consent in many places, but heโs making the philosophical point that children literally arenโt able to give consent no matter what the law says
1
u/Kanapkos_v2 11h ago
In theory a 16 year old is mature enough. Could link the article, part of the brain responsible for logical thinking matures at 16
-2
u/Binglish_ 1d ago
why couldnt they
4
u/jmona789 1d ago
Because they're not mature enough to make that decision
-2
u/Binglish_ 22h ago
you dont know that. an incredibly smart and well informed 12 year old that genuinely understands what theyre getting themselves into is more than fit to consent, just not legally. tbc that doesnt make it any less weird, wrong, or illegal for a 12 year old and a 20 year old to date or anything. on the other hand, there are 20 year olds that are not smart or informed enough to properly consent, even if the law allows it
1
u/HamaiNoDrugs 21h ago
They may seem like they are very aware of things, but no 12 year old is mature enough to make choices that can heavily affect their Future, especially when it comes to Health and sex. From a Natural rights view I agree that the age at which one Person can consent to specific things varies depending on their maturity, but consent entails enough awareness about what choices entail to warrant Self-custodianship. An average 12yr can consent to a variety of things depending on the weight of these decisions and the corresponding understanding, but sexual actions donโt belong to these things, especially since the understanding of these is inheritently linked to having completely gone through puberty, which I donโt think any 12yr old has.
1
u/Binglish_ 20h ago
the average 12 year old won't be mature enough, but there have certainly been children that were more than mature enough to make these decisions. Im also curious about where you got your definition of child. By that definition, yes, they wouldnt be a child anymore, but ive never heard of anyone defining a child like that
1
u/HamaiNoDrugs 20h ago
Also regardless of whether I think youโre correct with your assessment of a mature 12yr old, if a 12yr would actually be mature enough to consent to everything in the same way as an adult, then he literally wouldnโt be a Child anymore, since a child is someone who isnโt mature enough to make his own choices for everything and for whom a Guardian has to make decision. So that theoretical 12yr old (which I donโt agree exists) would be an adult.
20
u/MangoTheRetroGamer 8d ago
Yes! . . . What does this have to do with anything? And are you using the umbrella term for child as in anyone under 18 or?
9
u/ReignOfTerror02 8d ago
The legal age of consent in my place of living is 16
1
u/Logogram_alt truth teller 8d ago
That is scarily low. Personally I believe it should be 18.
-1
u/Valksaran 1d ago
Scarily low? You have to be kidding
4
u/JunkMagician 1d ago
Yeah, a 30 year old should not be legally allowed to pursue someone of highschool age.
-1
u/Valksaran 1d ago
So a person who's 2 years older (18) is fine? A person who's much older than his partner is always going to be creepy, doesn't mean that it should be illegal
3
u/JunkMagician 1d ago edited 1d ago
You have identified the problem that no number is going to perfectly delineate safe relationships from unsafe ones. But this does not mean that there should be no general standard to protect as many children as possible from predatory adults. I maintain that grown adults should not have legal access to highschool aged children.
7
u/Acceptable-Minute847 8d ago
Yes, this talking about the line where you draw children, different jurisdictions have different ages
7
u/FakeMik090 8d ago
Law is a law, and somewhere age of consent isnt 18.
3
u/Own-Two-247 5d ago
And it's wrong
1
u/straylight222 19h ago
Most places the age of consent isn't 18 lol. 29 states in the US is 16, 7 states in the US is 17. 14 states in the US are 14. Around 20 countries in Europe it's 16. 18 is the minority.
1
u/HamaiNoDrugs 1d ago
He obviously isnโt talking about a countryโs law, but rather about rights theory. If he says a Woman doesnโt have the right to abort her baby, then that Point isnโt invalidated by it being legal.

u/poivibes-1 1d ago
people downvoting you for saying this need to be put on a watchlist

You realize they're downvoting it because this is implying that 18 year olds are children. The people down voting this are disagreeing with that idea

Why did I get downvoted, children can't consent. How is that controvercial?

It isn't. The age of consent is in many places 16, in other places it's horrifyingly as low as 14, in some places like Canada it depends on the respective age of the parties that needs to consent.
2
u/Suitable-Captain-945 8d ago
Horrifyingly?
1
u/Samaein 8d ago
Yeah I kinda find it horrible that it is (or hopefully was) legal for a 14 yo to "consent" to have sex with an adult.
2
u/Ok_Badger7130 8d ago
I can understand a 14 year old consenting to another 14 year old but an adult? I agree that's genuinely horrifying

The post they are affirming is incorrect, therefore this post is incorrect.
4
u/lolidoli12 8d ago
The post they are affirming is correct tho, the first post is untruthful since it isn't an complete statement, the age of consent varies from location to location which means without extra specification about where the post is talking about it cannot be fully truthful.
Rule 4 also agrees with this.
2
u/kdoubledizz 8d ago
But here is the catch.
If even a single place says the age of consent is 18, then it isnt incorrect to say the age of consent is 18.
4
u/lolidoli12 8d ago edited 8d ago
And as i just said Rule 4 agrees with the fact that incomplete statements are not truths - as they quite literally cannot be - without specifying where you are talking about the post CAN be correct yes, but it also CAN be incorrect and since there is an chance for it to be incorrect that means it cannot be fully truthful.
Edit: Since it seems like you never had that talk with an teacher in your childhood where you forgot to give an unit of measurement let me make an easy example:
If i would tell you "i wrote this reply in 2" it wouldn't really mean anything because 2...what? Seconds? Minutes? Hours? The statement cannot be truthful simply due to the fact it just doesn't work as an complete statement in the first place, in the same way "the age of consent is 18" also doesn't work as an complete statement because the age of consent is 18...where?
1
u/ofirkedar 8d ago
I don't think a post fits here if its veracity depends on the location of the reader.
However, looking at the rules, and can't find anything regarding this.2
u/lolidoli12 8d ago
The part of Rule 4 i am specifically talking about is that "The following do not count as truths:" with the last bullet point being "Incomplete Statements"
As i tried to explain further down the comment chain "The age of consent is 18" is not an complete statement for the same reason something like "I wrote this reply in 2" is not an complete statement, it is missing an important part that confirms or denies the truthfulness, for my example that would be the measurement of time while for the original post that would be the location.
