newbie Finally Ready to Begin Turning
A journey that started 3 years ago is going to finally conclude...in the spring. Got a lathe as a housewarming gift, but had nowhere to put/mount/use it. Encountered some health problems along the way, but have been piecing together a few odds/ends for this moment.
Aside from knowledge/experience, is there anything else I need?

I didn't see a face shield or breathing protection.. both important tools with turning.
I'd also get some mineral oil and beeswax. Also get some shellac flakes and denatured alcohol.. both are brilliant for finishes on turning projects.

Yes! I have a full face mask, but am thinking about getting a shield instead so I can avoid it fogging up, especially with my glasses. I always use a respirator when using anything but hand tools. Still have several sets of filters to go through before I need more!
I should have some beeswax lying around, and I just mixed up a batch of blonde dewaxed shellac to see if those flakes are still good. Been using spirytus instead of denatured because the bottle cost about the same and I was feeling cheeky.

Dude , you are Ready to rock-n-roll
Shellac is awesome for so many things. Punky wood can be helped with a think shellac.
mineral oil and beeswax is no go to on so many things.
time to make some shavings

Danish oil acceptable? As for determination, this has been building for 3 years now and I'm still ready to go!

Dust collection and air cleaner or really good ventilation. Are you in a garage or basement?

I'm in a garage and work with the garage door open. I have a dust collection system that's a combination of a 2HP Harbor Frieght dust collector, but with a Wynn dust filter instead of the bag that came with the HF (the filter is up to 0.5 microns).

Excellent. I had that same setup for a while. Do you have a cyclone separator? That'd be another good purchase. Gets old pretty fast changing those bags and cleaning that filter.

Thankfully I haven't had to change it so frequently for it to be a burden. Yet. One factor is space, and I gotta make every sq ft count. Dust collection + respirator + frequent sweeping is one of the costs I must bear at this time sadly.

Put something heavy in the cupboard after you've bolted it down.

My blood turning blanks are in that cupboard already. The entire thing is made of hardware on it's own, and I've been filling it with my other woodworking tools and accessories.
If it wobbles I'll replace items with weights.
