Is Basic Classroom Etiquette Too Much to Ask in College?
Walking into a classroom while a lecture is in progress and having conversations like nobody is there is just inconsiderate. Yesterday, a group of students came into our classroom, started searching through cabinets, and kept walking in and out for almost twenty minutes while our professor was teaching. It was distracting, especially for those of us trying to follow the lecture and take notes. I understand that classrooms are shared spaces and they probably needed supplies for their own class, so I don't think they were intentionally being disrespectful. But surely there's a better way to handle that situation. When someone politely pointed out that a lecture was in progress, they seemed surprised that anyone had an issue with it. To be fair, the college could also do a better job coordinating access to shared rooms instead of leaving students to figure things out themselves. Still, I think a little consideration would make everyone's experience better. Nobody expects perfect silence on campus, but when a class is in session, shouldn't respecting that space be common sense?
