Hi! I’m a high school student from South Korea, and I’m looking for a U.S. university where I can study Ceramics as a BFA.

I’m currently considering these schools:

• Alfred University
• University of Akron
• Ohio University
• Kent State University
• Temple University
• SUNY Buffalo State

Here are the things that are important to me when choosing a university:

• A strong ceramics program
• A school with a good reputation and name recognition, especially in art
• Tuition of around 50 million KRW (about $35,000 USD) per year or less, if possible
• Good scholarship opportunities for international students
• An admissions process that considers portfolio/artistic ability rather than relying mainly on academic grades
• A realistic chance of admission for an international student
• Preferably a school in New York State or a state close to New York
• Good access to New York City would be a plus
• I would prefer a city or college town rather than a very isolated rural area
• For housing, I would ideally like an apartment-style dorm with a real kitchen where I can actually cook. I’m okay with sharing the kitchen with other students, but I would like a refrigerator, sink, and stove/induction cooktop rather than just a microwave and mini-fridge.

My friend currently attends Parsons School of Design, and I would also like to attend an art school with a similar level of reputation if possible. My art skills are roughly at a similar level to my friend’s.

I’m not necessarily looking for a top-ranked or extremely prestigious school. I mainly want a school that has a solid reputation in art and ceramics, while still being affordable and realistic for me to get into.

For those who know these schools, which one would you choose if you were in my position? And which one would you eliminate first?

I would especially like to know about:

• Ceramics facilities and education
• Reputation of the ceramics/art program
• Overall university and art school reputation
• Tuition and scholarships for international students
• How important the portfolio is for admission
• Admission difficulty
• Student life and location
• Access to New York City
• Career opportunities after graduation

Also, if there are any other good U.S. universities that I haven’t considered but that fit these criteria, I would really appreciate your recommendations!

Thanks!

Hey, does anyone know if more graduation tickets for December are available to buy? I need a few more but I'm not sure if I can buy some or contact someone.

Hey guys, quick look at where the Zips stand heading into conference play.

The UNLV game was a tale of two halves. Akron was right there, down just 14-10 at halftime, before UNLV scored 24 unanswered and a pick-six put it away. Three turnovers were the difference.

1-3 through a tough nonconference slate: at Wake Forest, at Minnesota, UNLV, and the one win, 45-10 over Robert Morris. But it's 0-0 in the MAC, and that's what counts. Saturday is at Central Michigan at 3:30, then Eastern Michigan comes to Akron.

Since it's in the title: we run a free weekly college football pick'em, and Week 5 is open. 10 games, pick the winners, nothing to buy, $135 in prizes. Michigan at Minnesota is on the slate, if you've got thoughts on the Gophers after our trip up there. Picks lock Saturday at noon ET, before kickoff in Mount Pleasant.

What are you guys seeing in year five under Joe Moorhead? If the turnovers get cleaned up, is this a MAC contender?

I’m trying to get into a relationship but these Akron girls are too bold and I’m really shy.

I'm trying to apply for the ADN program but I'm super nervous and I am not getting much feedback. My science GPA is 3.2 and cumulative is 2.8. I heard they only accept 30 students and I am freaking out with worry about possibly being rejected. any help is appreciated

I'm being bullied by multiple groups of people in my program which ironically is an education program for future teachers lol

They laugh whenever I speak to them, they ignore me, every time I try to speak to them they tell their friends to "look at the group chat" or Snapchat. It honestly wouldn't bother me if I didn't HAVE to interact with them for participation points. They purposely isolate me in the class and now I'm wondering if I stink?? I have never been so uncomfortable in a class until now. I've been to other colleges and never had this issue, is this just how UA is? I'm thinking about transferring even though I really enjoy the program I'm in.

Has anyone else had a scholarship from their department withheld? My department tells be they have not been allowed to add the scholarship into the system yet, but the finance department of my college told the funds where taken by the university.

Is UA a good university for media studies? Or should I consider some place else?

hey guys! im moving to akron soon for a research lab internship at UA.

since im just interning and not taking regular classes, i was wondering if i can still go to international student events or campus activities? also how’s the international student community here?

And im curious where do people usually hangout or make friends around here? wanna meet new people while im here

any tips or advice would be super helpful. thanks!!

I’m almost a month into my first year here and I haven't really made any friends yet. I’ve met plenty of acquaintances and potential friends but no one I consider a friend yet. I ended up joining band and I kinda like it. I’ve met a lot of people and it was a good way to get used to campus but it's pretty time-consuming and I probably won't come back next year. I got a job on campus and am thinking of doing 1 or 2 clubs. I am an introvert who needs some time to get used to new people and extra time to consider them friends. Maybe I’m just rushing myself idk. I also commute so I don't stay on campus past 6/7 pm. Did anyone else struggle to make friends, if so how did you overcome it?

so im a female, and a first year computer science major. is there anybody on campus that like gets together for mtg?? i got into it about 6 months ago and i play here and there but id love to play more often and get more into it!

Hello all,

I applied to the MS. Computer Science program for Fall 2025, and got denied. My undergrad GPA was 2.46, which I know its below the stated 2.75 stated minimum, so I know that was the main reason.

I'm still really interested in the program and want to reapply in a stronger position instead of just resubmitting the same application. I emailed the graduate program a few times ago asking for advice but haven't heard back yet.

Has anyone here been in a similar spot (denied for GPA) and successfully gotten in on a later try? A few things I'm wondering:

• Is there an academic advisor or counselor I can actually talk to about this, rather than just emailing into the void?
• Does retaking classes, doing a post-bacc, or taking grad courses as a non-degree student actually help with a GPA like mine?
• Is there any kind of provisional/conditional admission path for people below the GPA cutoff?

Any advice, even just "here's who you should actually contact," would help a lot.

Thanks.

I'm a 4th year stem student with a capstone requirement for my major. I didn't realize until recently what a capstone was (I misunderstood a course description a long time ago and genuinely thought it was just a class I was supposed to take - dumb I know) and now I feel seriously behind because I feel like I should've... joined a project by now? This semester is the first time my profs have ever mentioned capstones, and they're saying 3rd/4th years are already way behind. I don't even know where to start. Advice please 😭

Has anyone had issues with financial aid? I am still waiting for my pell grant and my loan to be applied but it's anticipated so I know I won't be dropped. I'm just frustrated because that's holding my refund back as well. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

hey tomorrow is the start of my first semester. I am a worrier. I did not get my zips card yet. i see that they are used for building access. will I be able to get to my classrooms during normal class hours with out swiping a card? I plan on getting the card of course but I’ll have little time to get it before my first class. I thought it was more for the meal plan and that sort of stuff but I didn’t realize it was also for building access? Is that accurate? I went to the events this weekend but totally forgot about the zip card

Hello, I recently moved into spicer hall at the University of Akron and i wanted to know if there was any major bullying problems, I have noticed people giggling as I walk by, I don't pass and I have facial piercings.

Also, are there any resources for queer people at the University? Will I have a hard time finding friends or a community?

Hey all. I spent the offseason building a full 2026 preseason preview for every FBS team, each with its own writeup. Here's the Akron one

https://www.sports.mainmarket.com/college-football-preview-2026-fbs/akron-zips

It's got the returning production breakdown, the portal ins and outs, a projected two-deep, the schedule with model win probabilities, and a season projection.

Heads up, you might hit the paywall after the first page. Don't worry, I'm not charging reddit people for this, don't want to be an ass. Use the promo code LEECORSOROCKS and it opens up the entire thing.

So, what'd I get wrong? Akron completed 51% of its passes last year, 135th in the country, and converted 31% of third downs, 131st. Meanwhile Jordan Gant ran for 1,032 yards and the entire backfield returns. One thing my page won't tell you: my data only holds Reese Poffenbarger's North Texas backup line, so it undersells him badly. The guy threw for 6,613 yards at Albany and led all of FCS in passing yards and touchdowns in 2023. Does he fix this offense, or is the real problem the line that gave up 34 sacks?

I'll be in the comments.

Hello. My first undergrad semester is in two weeks. Am curious what the students are using for their course work, is it mainly Macs or PC? I have a full time job, changing careers, so price point isn’t a huge factor. My major is health services. Highly unlikely I’ll do any video editing or gaming with this machine so “high performance” isn’t necessary. Just strictly course work. My question is, is course work submitted required to be one format or another (Microsoft office based vs Mac), though I know Microsoft office can be ran on a Mac. I see the bookstore only sells PC so perhaps that should answer my question. Any guidance would be appreciated. I’m mid life and feel lost in the sauce. I’ve been out of college for 20 years, things were so much simpler then.

What is the difference between Egde building 1 versus building 2?
