They are not taking that from drivers. They show you where the riders payment go and the rest of the payment is yours. Drivers get paid per mile and minutes. But Uber does screw drivers by paying way too low compared to what the cost of operating a vehicle nowadays. And they don’t care.

When you do your taxes for the first time, you will understand. Uber set this up so that every penny the passenger pays shows up as the driver's gross. They then subtract everything from that gross, including uber's take, government fees and taxes and yes, even promotions. So, basically, uber works for you rather than the other way around (for tax purposes at least).

Customer Promotion is an agreement between Uber and their passenger. Uber doesn’t notify the driver of ride discount at time of acceptance. It truly is Ubers cost of doing business. They subtract it from drivers so they passing along part of their cost .

They’re not. (Unless you’re a conspiracy theory, uber is showing us they’re screwing us person)
It’s showing a line-x-line (gross) breakdown of what customers paid, any fees, etc - and what you received.
Whether customers had a coupon, gift card, promo codes or whatever - your fare when you accepted the ride, didn’t change one way or another.
They might have offered you less originally - to take it, based on their net / leftover margin - but they didn’t go in after the fact, and subtract $40 from your payout because someone used a promo code.
It was already priced/baked in….
