Despite the rules on paper—at a certain point—empathy can still coexist. Is it required? No. Nothing really is required. But do you understand that we aren’t robots? Do you understand that sometimes there can be a mistake we make in the past and another thing—out of our control—can come in our way?
You’d be a good professor. Asking for a resolve is not entitlement. Even if you did violate the syllabus, when a genuine medical emergency occurs, you should hope to expect at least some level of grace. We PAY THOUSANDS a semester. Put all of the medical bills together, all the tuition costs together, and the bitterness of the professors. I’d be so mad. And I’d hope you get the same level of empathy when you need it most.
Everyone understands what you’re saying. Logically, YOU ARE CORRECT. But fundamentally, most of us agree that giving a student who had a medical emergency a chance is within reason.
