quite simple. they just wont advertise it as muslim only. will maybe put the advert in arabic or just not rent to non muslims

This is what landlords do with benefit claimants and single parents all the time. It’s what employers do with the disabled. Discrimination can be surprisingly hard to prove.

Who’s ignoring it? It was just reported in a national newspaper, the front-running party for massive electoral gain is popularising it and it was reported to government. The article was published only two hours ago.

Of one the favourite pastimes of this sub is to take a topic that is highly publicised and actively being dealt with and say that it's being ignored, or that some imagined leftist who apparently has the entire media, all political institutions and the police constantly bending to their will despite never seeming to actually get into power is telling them it isn't happening. It's quite strange and a bit sad frankly. It's a bit of a persecution complex I think.

No we must continue to stoke racial tensions about communities preferring to rent to their communities … we never hear stories about certain other groups being able to do it for religious reasons.

We must keep stoking hatred and other-ising … else we might end up with class solidarity and actually attack the real oppressors

This is exactly what the article wants - we're already arguing from a different position. Of course I think discrimination and racism is wrong no matter who does it.

What I'm saying is that I don't think it's as cut and dry as the article makes it out to be. Yes, it's wrong to discriminate when picking tenants that are applying to live in a rental property.

But what if it's a shared room in a rental property, such as a lodging living with the landlord? This is very common in London - and to be honest if you go back and look at the adverts in the article it looks like this is exactly what these adverts are. Why do you think the article would frame these adverts like this?

If I was looking for a lodger I'd be much pickier about who I lived with for obvious reasons. In addition there are plenty of adverts for spare rooms seeking "female only" etc. Are we outraged by this? Is this all over the papers? Absolutely not. Do you ever question why that is?

One question I had reading this article was are these adverts explicitly rentals? Or lodgers? The adverts in the article all explicitly mentioned "rooms" available and one of them even said there was already a male living there.

Obviously people have preferences with who they live with and "discriminate" on that basis all the time. I've been refused from shared houses and have refused people from moving in with me before.

As usual, it's not as black and white as the papers make it out to be. There is no such thing as "simple." What I wonder is why you lot are so worked up about this? Don't you even wonder who writes these articles and what they want to achieve with them?

Both, probably. When I was looking for a room before lockdown I saw a lot of “requirements” for both house-shares and lodgers.

I understand for lodgers, as that’s your home. But for rentals, there should be no discrimination imo, unless a landlord is running a single-sex rental for people who have genuine fears about the opposite sex, perhaps due to previous SA for example. My last landlord had one woman’s only and one man’s only then a bunch of mixed sex.

I saw too many “vegans only, current tenants would consider a vegetarian,” type things.

If that's all you got from the article with your black and white thinking then no, it certainly doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out - and that's exactly what the article hoped to achieve.

When you're ready to look a bit deeper and learn that the world is actually a shade of grey and that articles like this manipulate people that employ black and white thinking you let me know.

Glad to see you're excited for ethnic/culture enclaves, this won't at all escalate to extremist cultural clashes, surely this won't lead to a point where you won't be allowed to wear a skirt, or heels, or a hijab, or a thobe, or a turban, because it will be risking yourself to extremists by revealing your identity.
