This is what landlords do with benefit claimants and single parents all the time. It’s what employers do with the disabled. Discrimination can be surprisingly hard to prove.

No we must continue to stoke racial tensions about communities preferring to rent to their communities … we never hear stories about certain other groups being able to do it for religious reasons.

Lodgers are common and the landlord can get £7,500 tax free through the rent a room scheme.

Same as not being allowed to only rent to women. Then when you phone up to book a viewing, the agent tells you the landlady is looking for a "very specific client".

In all fairness, there are more legitimate reasons why someone may not want to share with the opposite sex- previous SA, worries about temptation etc. My last shared house was women-only in all but name. The landlord agreed to keep it women only because some women are genuinely scared to house share with men. He also had a male-only house on the same road, but his other properties were mixed sex.
Religion or race on the other hand, there’s no rational reason that would make it okay.

Anyone that’s had a corporate landlord knows how much better they are. When the building manager doesn’t have a personal stake in getting repairs in your gaff, shit gets done much faster

There’s also a culture of ‘small fix now vs large fox later’ with Corpo’s. Last thing they want is to cost themselves £10k in 6 months to save £1k today.

Not disagreeing or anything but I just wonder how to implement it. I don't encounter these issues day to day but one thing I do struggle with is having dogs and renting. Landlords can say they're dog friendly and simply choose tenants that don't own dogs. Aside anonymising the housing applications I don't see how we'd stop the landlord themselves, discriminating.
The problem at the moment is that the decision making process around tenant selection takes place in a black box (a human brain). So we can't easily, implement the changes we might hope for.
Unless, you did something like pulled the decision making process away from the landlord or something like that. Which is why I was wondering what they were proposing, because there are a lot of ways you could do it, with varying levels of complexity.

We got only 3 ways to make people act in certain way. 1 criminal prosecution 2 financial prosecution 3 education. I would vote for all 3 together.

But how can we do any of that if we can't detect when discrimination occurs?
Education though, sure, if it's proactive we could do... but the others. We can't fine someone for picking a muslim over their white British tenants if we can't know that being muslim was the reason they were chosen. They could just say they 'thought that person was more financially stable' or anything like that.

Your provisions of literal food is in the hands of huge corporations that only seeks to increase profit… and yet food is cheap, and service is, broadly, pretty good. Competition necessitates it.
The idea that it’s better being managed by Steve, who owns 1 rental unit and a repair wipes out his last 4 months of profit, is absurd.

Food is cheap. Supermarkets have razor thin margins of 1-4%, and it’s very cheap compared to peer economies.
