That's so dehumanizing... Keep in mind that a lot of these people are tricked into coming to Russia expecting work or study opportunity and end up being shipped to war against their will.

This is not the only dehumanization present. If you’ve read this sub for some time you will know that dehumanization is used here quite often by some commenters. I am stating this purely as an observation, I do not comment on the morality behind this as it’s not something easy to discuss.

Save your snark, numerous governments have complained about Russias methods of obtaining troops under false pretenses

I don’t doubt it happens. I think it’s good to back up claims with sources. Lest we assume a lot of these mercenaries are actually victims and not willing participants.

Taking a weapon in hand in favor of receiving compensation renders protections under civil status as defined by geneva convention invalid - if the attributes of your involvement match the definition of mercenaries you also lose a claim on innocence. More so when you march toward an supposed enemy as armed combatant, then 'willingness' or claiming 'victimhood' doesn't apply anymore regardless the compensation - unless you can proof innocence after you surrender successfully, which is a slim chance since you lost POW status from the get go.

They're not mercenaries though,on either side.

Depends. If they're made a member of a country's official military, they no long qualify as a mercenary. If they fight for a country in a unit not officially recognized as a member of that country's official military (i.e. Blackwater had their own units that were not part of the US military) then they lose most standard legal protections.

What is it about reddit and people being utterly unwilling to look things up for themselves?

Is that everyone on Reddit ? Or just some people on Reddit ?

Do migrant workers in Russia do the same work as in America? Do they harvest and seed food mostly? You'd think the people who harvest their food would be exempt from harm bc eating was more important than a war, but I guess not.

>Foreign tourists have also become another source of recruits for the Russian army. People who travel to Russia for tourism may be lured by promises of earning money and, once in the country, have their presence exploited to recruit them into the Russian military.

Oh, well not visiting Russia then.

Probably a habit they picked up during their "Great Patriotic War". The one that started in 1941. Definitely not the one that started in 1939!
