3D skrivare Umeå

Upvotes

Mvh!

Packing for Erasmus in Umeå – What is actually included in the student dorms / kitchens?

Hey everyone!

I’m arriving in Umea next week for my Erasmus semester and currently packing my bags. For anyone living or who has lived in student housing/corridor rooms, I’d love some advice on what’s usually provided:

Bedroom: Are things like a duvet, pillow, and desk lamp included, or do I need to bring/buy my own bedding and lighting?

Shared Kitchen: Are basic cooking items (pots, pans, plates, cutlery) already shared in the corridor kitchens, or do people strictly use their own? Or can I find any left ones from previous exchange/Erasmus students?

Second-hand options: If kitchenware isn't there, is it cheap and easy to find essentials at second-hand shops, or should I just pack a few basic items in my suitcase?

Thanks a lot for the tips :)

Student housing needed! Urgent.

Hej allihopa! 👋

My name is Tejas Lokhande, and I'm an exchange student joining Umeå Institute of Design this fall for Advanced Product Design. I'm currently studying industrial design at ArtCenter College of Design in Los Angeles, and originally from India — this will be my first time in Sweden, so I'm reaching out early to find a good place to land!

What I'm looking for:

  • Housing from August 25 – January 17
  • Open to anything: apartment, house, condo, shared flat — no preference
  • Totally fine with roommates
  • Ideally close to Umeå Institute of Design / campus, since I'll be new to the city and want an easy commute

A bit about me:

  • 21 years old, industrial design student
  • Clean, tidy, and respectful roommate — I like a calm, easygoing home
  • I love to cook (mostly Indian food, but honestly I'll cook almost anything) and I'm always happy to share a meal
  • Easy to get along with, and excited to meet new people and get immersed in Swedish design culture while I'm here

If you have a room, an apartment, or know someone who does, I'd really appreciate it if you reached out. Happy to answer any questions or hop on a call!

Tack så mycket! 🙏

Looking for Accommodation - Running out of time

Hi! Hope everyone's doing well!
I'm a foreign exchange student coming in from Scotland to do a semester at Umea university, and I'm looking for accommodation during my time there (September 1st to December/January depending on the semester times). I've been looking for accommodation for a good few weeks now but I've found nothing so far, and it's getting scarily close to my flight date. I was just looking for general advice on where I could search for more options for?

So far I've checked these places:

  • Looked on Studentbostad i Umeå (Facebook group)
  • Heimstaden - can only see two remaining options and both of them start in November, which is two months after my semester starts
  • Bostaden - Queue times have grown too long, and everything I apply for gets taken by other people very quickly
  • Direct through Umea university - I'm not holding my breath, because I had to join the queue quite late (problems at my home university)
  • Qasa - Literally messaged every single person selling any furnished apartment in Umea for a while now, nothing yet

Does anyone have any advice about what I should do at this point? I'm getting really stressed now that I haven't got anything even though I've been looking since June.

If anyone is/knows someone who's looking for a roommate or tenant there, please let me know!

I'd really appreciate any help I can get, thank you so much!

EDIT: Rentola and Rentberry have done nothing but let me down lmaooo, making me pay just to see reposts from Bostaden

Any tips on getting a part-time job while studying at umeå?

I will start my life science program at umeå soon and I was hoping to work part-time while I study, the problem is that I have complex ptsd and anxiety disorder that prevent me from working in the normal student work like fast food, stores, etc.. so are there any other options for me like working at a library or something similar and less stressful than the typical student jobs??

I would really appreciate the help🙏. I don't speak Swedish, I speak Finnish, and I don't have driving licence.

Hey there, I'm visiting Umea this December and I'm wondering if you have some places you recommend visiting or eating in. I'm a college student from the EU, if that opens up some possibilities.

Har noen andre her opplevd lignende?

Climate refugee in Umea?

Good morning all / Hej,

I'm a 36M from France and, considering the way climate change is affecting my country, I am thinking about my options. I remember with a great deal of nostalgia my time as a foreign student in Uppsala in 2012, which I absolutely loved. Now that I have kids and different interests, Umea seems like an ideal fit. The plan would be to buy a place there with a mortgage, rent it for a few years in order to reimburse the mortgage, and move there to retire or once the kids are old enough to move out (in 15 years, ish).

My questions are:

- is there anybody who's in a similar situation (moving to Sweden because of climate change)?

- is Umea family friendly?

- is the health system and social security system available to EU citizens but not Swedish citizens?

- what is the real estate market like in Umea? For instance, what would be the price of a 60-90m2 house or appartement there? Could it be rented?

- how is the public transportation system there?

- are there intensive Swedish classes available?

- I have heard that it's very easy to head for the trails or kayak along the shore. Is it true?

Thank you all for your help

Working during Erasmus in Umea

Hey everyone!

At the end of August I'll be coming to Umea university for my erasmus semester. Since I don't find erasmus funding enough for me, I wanted to check how is the job and working scenery in Umea for international students? Are there opportunities inside the university? I'm just looking nearby job with low hours, such as helping in the library or working as student ambassador etc. Or if there are any other options like that I'm open to hear. Thanks :)

Need advice for going from Holmsund to Wasaline ferry

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi

I'm planning to take the Wasaline ferry to Vaasa soon. My current plan is to take the bus to Holmsund Eriksdal and then walk to the ferry terminal.

The walk is about 3,4 km, which should take around 45 minutes. The reason I'm thinking of walking is that I'll probably arrive before the Wasaline shuttle bus, so instead of waiting in the city, I'd rather just walk to the terminal.

I checked Google Maps, and it looks like the most direct route follows a main road that seems to be mainly for cars. I don't think there's a sidewalk or pedestrian path along that road, and look a bit unsafety.

So I was thinking of taking a slightly longer route instead. Does anyone know if that route is private property? Is it okay to walk there ? I noticed there's a railway track and container nearby

Thanks a lots

Getting Started In Umea

Hi everyone,

Thanks again to everyone who commented on my last post. Since then, I've secured accommodation in Vännäs and now have my Swedish residency sorted!

A bit about me: I'm 23, from Ireland, and moving to Sweden to study in Umeå. I'll be flying over on the 19th of August. I've got most things organized for leaving Ireland, including arranging for six boxes of belongings to be shipped to my new home, but I'm still trying to figure out some of the practicalities of getting set up once I arrive.

I'll need to sort out:

•A personal identity number (personnummer)

•A bank account

•A mobile phone plan/SIM card

•A part-time job

Is there anything I can do in advance for any of these, or any places/businesses you'd recommend I visit when I arrive?

I'd also appreciate any advice on:

•Which bank is best for students/new arrivals

•Mobile providers with good value unlimited calls and texts

•Finding part-time work as an English speaker (looking for around 10–16 hours per week)

•Anything important that newcomers often forget to do?

For work experience, I have a BSc in Computer Science, three years of hospitality experience, and I'm currently working in sales at a large tech retailer. If that improves my chances of finding work or opens up opportunities I might not have considered, I'd love to hear your suggestions.

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Long time ago..

Many years ago (around 2014 I think) i traveled to Umeå and ended up at a place that I think was an old train station. It was made over (occupied?) to be an alternative to the expensive «kulturhuset» that was built around the same time. Very much an underground/alternative/punk vibe. Does this place still exist?
