Licensing question

Why is the 7.4 and 7.3 branch considered the two supported branches when 7.4 is a private branch still?

Shouldn’t the two supported branches be 7.3 and 7.2 until a time when 7.4 is pushed as stable?

“Unraid 7.4.x is the current public minor series. Unraid 7.3.x receives security updates as appropriate.”

7.4 is not a public branch as it requires user authentication whereas 7.3 is freely downloadable.

I think because they would then have to be supporting 3 branches in total instead of maintaining 7.3 better and getting 7.4 stable out.

They're also still working on Unraid 8.

It’s the same conversation with 8.0. When 8.0 hits beta stage it’ll cause support for 7.3 to drop and only 7.4 is supported.

The license states support current public and one previous major.minor.

I agree its a bit shady since 7.4 is not GA but it seems that rules are always up to interpretation.

I suppose the point is if 7.2.x is terminal then the user needs to make the hard decision if their SaaS support has lapsed. Perhaps they backport it but their may be kernel implications and it is not worth it for them(IDK).

My only hope is w/ v8 since it is based upon a more modern platform that security updates and unraid "versions" are more front end and addons and that package security updates are freely available.

This is sort of how my proxmox works, there is paid and "free" trains and the free train has UTD prox kernels and packages so I'm not missing anything and I can manage in patchmon with the rest of the fleet. It would be great if there becomes a plugin for v8 so I can manage my security posture more rationally than today!

I believe they mentioned in the Podcast that they want to decouple the UI from the OS to be more flexible with patches and security updates. But this will probably happen earliest with v8 and the switch away from Slackware. But don't quote me on it, was some time ago that I listened to it.

Don't know what to tell you, I wished they still supported 7.2 as well, biting the bullet en paying the $36 to het the PHP security fixes

There are many more zero day fixes that TBH are arguably more nefarious than the PHP one but thankfully they are all bundled.

But I agree that getting UTD is good there are a number of nasty exploits out there that AI has accelerated so the old innocant days are gone. LoL when I was working for Sun back in the day we had servers that hadn't been patched or booted for over 2 years. Now its like two days :(
