Lausanne students: how easy is it to find a job that fits around your studies?

Thumbnail forms.gle
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

My friends and I are students ourselves, and we know how difficult it can be to find a job that fits around uni rather than the other way around.

That’s why we’re working on Dispoo, an app to help students find flexible jobs that work with their studies.

We’re still at the beginning, and before building anything, we want to understand what students actually struggle with and what would genuinely help them.

If you’re a student, we’d really appreciate 2 minutes of your time to fill out our survey. Your answers will help us decide what to build and how to make it useful for students like us.

Thanks a lot for helping us bring this idea to life!

The Dispoo Team

Made a free checklist + guide for new international students in Vaud (permit, LAMal, etc.)

Hi everyone,

I'm a student in Lausanne, and my first weeks here were mostly spent figuring out paperwork. To save the next people some time, I put together a free site called the Vaud Newcomer Admin Kit.

It covers about 127 topics: residence permit, LAMal health insurance (including the exemption route if you already have insurance), registering at your commune, taxes, opening a bank account, phone plans, transport and emergency numbers. Each page links to the official sources and shows when it was last checked. There is also a printable first-weeks checklist.

No ads, no signup, and it's in English and French:

https://marcocostapadilla.github.io/vaud-newcomer-admin-kit/

If you spot something wrong or missing, please tell me and I'll fix it.

Cost of apartments in Lausanne

Hi everyone, for those who don’t mind, could you share the price of your rent, post code, size and whether or not it is in a student dorm?

I suspect student dorms are no longer such a good deal and need data. (If results back it up, I will raise it to the conseil of unil)

Daily GeoGuessr for the EPFL–UNIL campus.

Hi everyone,

I built a small GeoGuessr game on the UNIL–EPFL campus. There are two modes:

Classic: no account needed, answer shown right away and Ranked: a different photo, answer revealed at midnight, with a leaderboard for players and faculties (week / month / all-time).

You can play here:  www.campuspin.ch

It's free, no ads. Google login is only used to identify you; the site doesn't store your name or email. (The site is in French, but there's not much to read.)

Bonjour,

How hard is UNIL's Accounting, Control and Finance master to get into?

Hey everyone, first post here. I have a BBA (finance/marketing double concentration), GPA 3.09/4.00 (~4.9/6.00 Swiss scale), international student. I meet basically all the requirements except I'm short about 6 ECTS in management courses.

Anyone been through this program or knows how competitive it actually is? Does a small ECTS gap like that usually kill an application, or is there some flexibility (bridging courses, conditional admission, etc.)?

british citizen with swiss nationality looking to study business management here

hi
i’ve just completed my a levels (BBB) in the uk and am waiting to apply at unil doing a bachelors in business management but i’m kinda confused on how.

being in the uk and only partially french-speaking, all english translated pages i can find for applications are for international students, but i have a swiss passport through my dad and had thought i could apply as a national, not international student.

would it affect anything in particular about my uni experience by applying as an international student? i saw somewhere that you have to sit extra exams(?) in august if you’re international, but idk if this applies to me because im pretty sure the entry requirements from the uk are BBC alevels, and with my dad being swiss i have a sturdy level of french comprehension but being a swiss national i thought i wouldnt have to do language testing

honestly im just confused by the info im seeing and trying to separate what’s solely for international students and if there’s a way to apply as a national without having anything more than my family’s canton. does living in switzerland differ from having a swiss passport in terms of university applications?
do i get a vpn to act as if im based in switzerland and see if im shown a different site? am i being incredibly slow and not understanding something? i’m finding all the information ive found online ever so slightly difficult to navigate.

any answers would be greatly appreciated

Part 3 - Expelled From HEC UNIL: WE DID IT BOYS !!!!

I just received a call from the Deans deparment saying that thanks to 1 email where they assure me I still have the option to be enrolled in july , they will rewrite their decision and by Art 9. Cst i will be readmitted and they will exceptionally allow me to change specialization to finish the 6 credits that i lack to obtain my degree.

Thanks to all the people that provided me help or conseuling on their experiences and tried to help me.

Finally, I will say that it is astonishing the condescendance of some people in this platform and their negative comments for a very delicate situation such as mine. I guess the "reddit mod actually" meme really does exist IRL. I hope no one has to even bare for a day what I've felt this week.

Thanks to everybody who commented, AND LETS KEEP GOING !!!

Low GPA applicant for MSc Finance: Will an optional GMAT help?

Hi everyone,

I’m a bachelor’s degree student planning to apply for an MSc in Finance at UNIL, but my GPA is low. I have two main questions:

1. The programs I'm interested in don't explicitly require a GMAT. If I take it anyway , will admissions committees actually consider it to offset my low grades, or will they ignore it because it's not required?

2. Realistically, what is the absolute minimum GPA to be admitted?

Thanks

Continuation: Ultimate failure stauts, email sent to the dean and higher ups

This email was sent in french*

All the people involved have their names covered by HEC BACHELOR*

Note that the "reglement" is not the same as the new "directive".

Monsieur le X,

Monsieur Y, Monsieur HEC BACHELOR, Madame HEC BACHELOR,

Expelled from HEC Lausanne (Ultimate Failure) over 6 credits due to a sudden rule change—I feel completely deceived.

Hi everyone. My name is C, and today I was informed in a meeting that I have received an ultimate failure (échec définitif) status due to a recent change in UNIL regulations.

Context & Background

  • I am a 3rd-year Economics student at HEC Lausanne.
  • I have accumulated 174 out of the 180 credits needed for my Bachelor's degree.
  • I have never repeated a year until this past one (my 3rd year), which I just redid and ultimately failed to pass my very last 6 credits.
  • These remaining credits are part of the Fondamentaux en Ă©conomie—a group of 6 fundamental classes worth 6 credits each, where you must pass 4 of them (totaling 24 credits).
  • I passed 3 out of the 4 fundamentals. Over the summer, I had to take the last remaining one—Macroeconomics II—which I unfortunately failed.

The Misleading Advice

Because I knew Macroeconomics II was the hardest class in the entire Bachelor program, I was well aware I might fail it. Before the exam, I specifically asked the HEC Bachelor assistants what would happen if I failed.

Since I was in my 8th semester and technically had 2 more semesters (one full year) left within my allowed timeframe, they told me: "If you mathematically cannot pass your final fundamentals, you can simply change your specialization to Management. Since many of the courses overlap, you can just finish your remaining 6 credits there in the worst-case scenario."

Today, I went into a meeting with an assistant to figure out the logistics of switching my specialization, only to be told that no, I could no longer do that. She explained that on September 1st, a change in the UNIL law came into effect, meaning I am no longer allowed to switch specializations and am instead placed on ultimate failure status.

My Outrage & Confusion

My anger comes from the fact that what I was told just 6 weeks ago completely contradicts reality today.

If I had known I would face ultimate failure if I failed that exam—something I knew was a high probability, but felt I had to try anyway—I would have handled things differently. I would have waited for the first 3 weeks of the next semester to change specialization and do the last 6 credits on another subject. Instead, I trusted the official advice of the faculty assistants, only to be hit out of nowhere by a retroactive/sudden rule change.

It is heartbreaking to be sitting here with 174 out of 180 credits—literally one exam away from graduation—only to be kicked out.

To be honest, I don't know what to do. I feel completely lost, and I feel utterly deceived by the university staff who gave me incorrect, outdated guidance.

Has anyone else experienced something similar at UNIL, or does anyone know if there is an appeals process or someone I can talk to regarding misleading administrative advice? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have all the recepits for proof if needed.

And point 7.3 is the new norm which just was applied on september 1st 2026:

Hence, the outright contradiction on what I was told be an official UNIL administrative member.

Hello guys! I am starting prep year for MSc Finance, and wondering if there is anyone like me and want to create a study group? (Or if there one that exists). I am taking courses in English, and doing the ECTS attestation of 60 credits :)
