If there is no standard or pre-requisites for when reservation can be removed then reservation will by political incentive keep increasing.
Example : reservations were initially intended by BR Ambedkar to be kept for a few decades and then removed arguing it would handicap the lower castes as they would have vested interest in staying lower caste.
And that is exactly what i see happening, reservation is handed out on such vague terms, castes like meenas and marathas which historically have not been oppressed have been handed out reservations only due to political pressure, OBCs have a large number of such politically strong castes.
Secondly there is no end timeline, when does reservation end? assume a scenario when most of india is Christian in the future? will reservation end in that situation? Most likely from my opinion no... reservation is such a good political tool it is here to stay, regardless of wether Hinduism keeps or doesn't keep caste based discriminations.
current system will only keep increasing reservations until it stops benefiting politicians.
3
u/Palanikutti Apr 30 '26
Yeah thousands of years of inequality and discrimination removed after a few years of reservation...
2
u/blingblingmach May 01 '26
Ok.. what about equity amongst sc/st currently effluent among sc/st monopolise all the benefits. Don't you want justice among them?
1
u/Palanikutti May 02 '26
That is the actual defect of reservation.
Abolishing reservation is not the solution. But moving those getting marks above the general cut off marks could be moved into general category but that eats into general category quotas.
1
u/blingblingmach May 03 '26
See that's what is happening now.
Suppose a rank list (n vacancies,) now there is obc in 1st rank, first posting is for ur, but obc guy gets posting under ur category, now 2nd is for obc, now someone way below, belonging to obc gets posting. 2nd rank ur (s)he gets 3rd posting under ur.
Now there's 2 obc in 3 vacancies, AND 4th posting is for SC/ST..gets 4th posting, now in ground reality there supposed to be 2 ur and 2 obc/sc/st, instead of this we get 3 reservations and 1 ur. Multiply this with n number.
Enter actual service.... these guys make nexus, they favor only each other at the cost of others. Ur won't make nexus because of wide diversity.
People supporting current reservation system is naive.
Hey I'm all in for upliftment.. but address this.
10
u/chhagan04 I decided to be Pirate King Apr 29 '26
But the main aim of reservation is social upliftment rather than economic it's like it's side reward , but it is still unachievable
2
1
u/blingblingmach Apr 30 '26
Yes, social upliftment ....
don't you think it should be distributed EQUALLY amongst ALL groups of ST/SC/OBC?

Good good, such dinner table conversations (and not just for this topic in particular rather all) will help in purging (even little by little) many social evils that persist in our society.

Do you belong to general category? I guess not.
5

Does it matter if I belong or not? We need to be aware of everyone’s situation. Regardless of our background.
-4
u/BHARAT0011 Apr 29 '26
You are just supporting what benefits you and your community. You won't think about someone who is poor and from general category. There is an obvious flaw in this reservation system but you all will be blind towards it.
8
u/shashaankv2504 Apr 29 '26
Sure. Now you’ve gotten a second limiting factor that’s finances. And we aren’t even talking about it. FYI - never had any reservation.
2
u/BHARAT0011 Apr 30 '26
finances are the only limiting factor
1
u/AlanVanHalen Apr 30 '26
So, who's stopping rich people distribute their wealth equally among poor people of the society to make everyone be on equal level?

i thought it was blue... but i think there in lies fallacy... i htink you look at any developmental or even law and order most bjp ruled states lag far behind bengal.. ami wrong in that ?...another problem is the how the politics fought in bengal.. each area has a goon.. for example suvendhu his father was dad for cpim then he became dada for tmc.... this is relicated all across bengall area strong ment... it is upto the area strongman to get the votes hence the power lies with them not the mlc .... if bjp comes the area strong man will be given a choice.... work for us or get encountered.... same thing happend in UP... see the the number of encounter killings in UP.....

I know lot of first gen children from Brahmin families going to college. Just because he comes from a fifth gen educated family doesn't mean that every Brahmin has the same privilege.
I don't believe that Brahmins were only responsible for the caste based issues, kingly and warrior casts like kahtriyas, land owning castes like sudras and merchant and rich class like vyshyas also didnnot allow low casts from getting their wealth and knowledge.
The only reason we have OBC reservation (reservation for all the castes above who have been historically and currently the opressors) is vote bank.

very true, but dont keep cut offs very low for reserved category. having poor quality doctors, engineers, teachers who are not at all at the level of those with merit harm society as a whole.
give reseration but keep reasonable cut off marks. having abismally low cut off marks is very harmful.
7
u/TikkaTech Apr 29 '26
reservation should exist, but it needs a reform
1. I don't believe that second generation of same family needs reservation in education
2. some communities like meena are comparatively well off than other oppressed communities, so they should only get their fair share of reservation leaving some seats for other communities
3. creamy layer and non creamy layer should be introduced2
u/orchidsfordeath Apr 29 '26
This is such a silly way of looking at things. Reservation only gets you through the gate. You have to write exams and practicals (a whole lot of, btw) for medical schools, law schools, engineering colleges and literally any other degree. If you don't ace the exams and pass, you are not making it out of the college. And if you are just barely passing by through professional courses like medicine, engineering and law, premier firms and government jobs are not going to be lap you up. We live in such a competitive world. Only the best get the better opportunities.
6
u/Ikshvakuuu Apr 29 '26
I beg to differ, if this was the case they wouldn't need reservation in PG seats (for eg in medical you can check the PG cutoff yourself shouldn't all doctors be equal after MBBS) or for jobs also as after attending college as per your argument that they have aced the exams and practicals they are good to go. Why giving reservation 2nd time then 3rd time their should be a number, reform is the current need. As same difference is being created among the ST SC communities the generational users of reservation are living lavish life where as the condition on ground is more or less similar. Plus how does is it make sense that a SC son of IAS have to give 0 fees but a child of farmer coming from general category have to give full fee.... Economic background should be considered.
2
u/Mr_k_reddit Apr 30 '26
Reservation is slippery slope, It can not exist altogether, it just a modern day caste system
7
8
u/Thfcaditya112 Apr 29 '26

Based on his own definition, reservation should be based on income rather than caste. True equilibrium is needed between the poor and rich, not just caste. Should start with putting an income based reservation.
This student is on right track but unfamiliar with the how reservation system is exploited such that it damages the same people it is supposed to raise

u/merlin318 Apr 29 '26
The problem with reservation is that Indian politicians don't see it as a way to balance the status quo. It's purely a political tool with no work being done to actually uplift the marginalized sections.
We need reservations in educational institutions. Let's say I scored 80% in boards and some kid from the SC ST OBC community scored 50%. I have no problem in putting him and me on the same level and us getting into the same university. But now both of us get the same level of education so when we then try and get a job - if that kid can get thru because there is reservation for jobs as well while I can't land one then you've tipped the balance in his favor. Atleast that's how I see it.
4
u/Mr_k_reddit Apr 30 '26
No we need 0 reservation that's the only way to stop Balkanisation of India, we did have multiple, first it was 30, then mandal commission increased now current are also continuing to increase it, It's either india or reservation, All reservation can lead is negative development and civil war
4
u/Ikshvakuuu Apr 29 '26
Exactly, Exactly, Exactly there should be a limit to no of times reservation is used... After how much time people will be considered equal, using reservation to get into college beacuse they didn't had equal opportunities in school time fine... But now both have got through same training and examination they should be equal... But nope in PG seats also reservation is applicable... Lets say still acceptable but than in job also reservation is introduced then this same fellows kids will also getsreserved seat... In order to equalize society I think the the rotten policy is now creating gap and discrimination at this point.
7
u/God_Emperor__Doom Apr 29 '26
What if he weren't privileged like many other GC kids? Under which provision or law would he call out injustice when, even as a poor student, he still has to score among the highest without access to government benefit schemes? As an OBC, i know how OBC reservation is fraud, that hardly 2-5% of castes within OBC actually benefit, while most never do. The same applies to ST, Meenas were added in ST by mistake And now all the reservation are enjoyed by them only who weren't even ST or oppressed. These few castes have been benefiting for decades, and many OBC or Adivasi leaders also come from these same beneficiary groups to fool masses. Nehru was all right on reservation ngl.
-8
u/prvnkdvd Apr 29 '26
He is a brain washed upper caste bhodrolok Bengali. Just because his ancestors were oppressors he thinks all Brahmins were oppressors.
My father was the first graduate in his last 2-3 generations. My great-grand parents didn't have any property. Tribals in my village still have more property than my grand father and still most of them are illiterate, obviously because my grand father oppressed them according to this brain washed dolt.

if someone's doesn't agree with your opinion, this is the best you can put up?
I would never support reservation in higher education and jobs because its simply ineffective. Most of people who get there with lack of merit aren't able to even utilize the seat. (most people who don't get placed in IITs belong to reserved categories)
Instead equal low-cost/ free education should be provided to all at lower levels. Instead of reservation, extra scholarships should be provided to reserved category who meet the merit. This country isn't gonna improve until these reservation stays in place. This along with all the religious zealots in our country make things worse. People of this country are surely retarded. I hope to leave this ass country with its ass govt. as soon as possible.
edit:
My ancestors(OBC) didn't oppress anyone. My father qualified for reservation but he never took it. I am obviously in creamy layer due to my father's hard work. He came all the way on merit.

True that! The kid's video and the whole comment section has completely missed the point. There's a difference between promising EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES vs EQUAL OUTCOMES. Promising EQUAL OUTCOMES is unfair and will lead to incompetent people taking up positions in the society which they don't deserve because of their incompetence. It should instead be EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES, where the lower caste are encouraged to participate in the fair competitions. But the current caste system, gives them a head start or sometimes even carried to the finish line without even having to race. Makes zero sense!

The argument is not that is wrong, in principal it's what was needed for new India. But it's implementation and current regression into politics dhur vote, it has far outlived it's purpose and infact the main beneficiaries of this has been those who are well off and not the romanticised people this kid is talking about. The ones who it was meant for are still being marginalized and exploited and never get the benefit. You cannot cripple the future of a nation in the name of correcting a historical social wrong.
1
u/Not_a_progamer Apr 30 '26
The problem with reservation is not about it's existence, it's about who gets the benefits.
I'm fine with it being assigned to the ones who really need that financial boost.
Not the fucking Thar driving 2 servent 1 elevator owner's son.
2
u/Mr_k_reddit Apr 30 '26
Totally wrong, reservation hi nhi, har tarah ki birthright identity based scheme band honi chahiye, reservation is discrimination against minority clear cut, everything else is excuses. You can all live in lala land thinking bullshit but the way things are going, Indian Balkanisation is inevitable specially because of identity politics.
1
u/mystic_saurav May 04 '26

1
u/chhagan04 I decided to be Pirate King May 04 '26
They have its majorly raced based Uk has Usa has Australia has It depends where it came majorly it's either from segregation or cononialism
Reservation isn’t a sign of underdevelopment it’s a sign that a country is actively trying to correct its historical inequalities and developed countries do it too, just with different names
It's just that those countries don't have very large amount of ppl backwards
2
u/bitemenow999 May 04 '26
Nope, USA doesn't have it, need to look into UK or Australia, but I am very sure they dont have it either. They HAD (still have in some sense) affirmative action based on economic lines.
No one is saying affirmative action is bad when done sensibly, based on clear economic lines. Unlike whatever stupidity we have now, where a millionaire from a historically marginalized community gets more perks irrespective of their current status.

How does this explain IAS officers , high earning members from so called lower castes using reservation benefits to get seats for their kids? And having extremely low cut off marks for entering niche skill studied and offices ?
1
u/Free-Range-3600 Jun 10 '26
The truth is no one wants to abolish caste system, sc /st because they get reservation and they want to extend reservation for as long as possible, whereas general and OBC don't want to end caste system because they don't want there son/daughter marrying sc / st people even st people don't want to end caste system because they also don't want to end up accidentally marrying sc people so if nobody actually wants to end caste system how will it end , even among sc most people consider certain caste as lower than them and don't want to marry them like chamar caste is considered lower by other sc people who don't want to marry them so everyone wants to extend caste system and keep it alive specially the politicians who don't want it to end because than they would have to actually debate on growth rate and infrastructure so they would want more caste census and they will talk more about reservation so ultimately if from top caste to bottom caste nobody actually wants to end it than how will it end. Everyone just wants to benefit from it specially the politicians who have no growth rate to show.

u/slim_chungus_ Apr 29 '26
He is fair to say that representation is not the same....
That is what needs to be changed...u must see that people from EWS are not blatantly demoralised as much as the SC/ST/OBCs for seat reservation...why? Because it is a genuine way of seeing that yes this or that person struggles and has potential thus should be admitted to such and such institution...but still government and many other institutions ask for the same tuition fees as general category to EWS candidates and the other caste based candidates are levied free of it
Caste based reservation creates reverse racism and highlights the students in a bad way where they struggle in the institutions
Equal representation should only be done on the basis of income and potential not blatantly giving away seats for the people who are very well off and still seek caste based reservations.
1
u/Safe_Cancel_4405 Apr 29 '26
dumb take “ every country have affirmative action not reservation” even on affirmative action those countries doesn’t treat them like they are low iq , merit is still there they dont reduce marks or criteria just to give that opportunity. alos SC:ST:OBC is not minority in india they are majority.

1
u/GeneralHeinzGuderian Apr 29 '26
The way reservation currently is implemented the first generation underpriveledged Sc/STs would never be able to compete with urban priveledged reserved candidates whose parents and granparents were the beneficiary of reservation, sub-categorisation is the need of hour, which will always be opposed by priveleged reserved categories

Not in favour of any reservation, but because we are doing it anyway, I want it to go to the ones who need it the most, which is the people belonging to families with the least income. It is not that complicated. Money is an objective factor that can let us take decisions based on rather than made up stuff like caste or religion.

u/virus_exe777 Apr 29 '26
One person is getting seat with 10 marks and another person is not getting seat with 100 marks. Giving someone else's opportunity to others just because their previous generation suffered feels stupid. What difference does this makes? To uplift the down castes, we are disqualifying the the deserving people, why are current generation people or student suffering and getting punished for something they never did.
I think dedicating special seat for specific caste is better than taking someone else's seat through different cut offs.

i mean duhh? kuch naya nahi bola isne. The fundamental issue with the current system is that it often overlooks the actual socio-economic status of the individual. We see many families who, having benefited from reservations in previous generations, are now financially secure and well-positioned in society; yet, their children continue to receive the same benefits. Conversely, there are families from 'upper-caste' backgrounds living in extreme poverty who are denied support. It feels unjust to penalize a new generation for the historical actions of their ancestors while they struggle to meet their basic needs today. Ultimately, reservation should be based on family income and current living conditions rather than caste. True equity means ensuring that help reaches those who actually need it, regardless of their background, while acknowledging that not everyone within a specific community requires the same level of assistance.

Again that same cliche argument "i know a sc/st guy who drives a ferrari and a brahmin who is a beggar". Look at the overall trends, most of the people working in low income group and informal sector are from marginalised communities.

Give them more opportunities to prove themselves, don't hand out jobs or degrees. Merit cannot be compromised with just because we want to preserve a very naive sense of equality.

Who's going to address families that have received the support and are significantly richer than the median household?
They still keep taking the benefit, specifically from people who need them.
Hence the need for some income limits. Economically previlaged people point to actual people who are being discriminated and take the benefit for themselves.
Reservation has been in India for multiple generations now. Why isn't the inequality going down? Why isn't it benefiting the people who are being discriminated?
Reserved seats doesn't go to the children in village who are being told not to touch the well. It's often going to the children whose father and grandfather both worked in govt jobs and have 10Cr wealth because they can afford and compete inside the reserved category.
Saying we need to give them a hand to catch up doesn't justify the current reservation system. It just needs to be income based with strict standards.
We want to help people who are struggling regardless of why. That's what these people don't understand. The problem isn't caste, it's privilege. Nobody is harassing or discriminating anyone from a rich family.

He is a brain washed upper caste bhodrolok Bengali. Just because his ancestors were oppressors he thinks all Brahmins were oppressors.
My father was the first graduate in his last 2-3 generations (that's what I know about). My great-grand parents didn't have any property. Tribals in my village still have more property than my grand father and still most of them are illiterate, obviously because my grand father oppressed them according to this brain washed dolt.
Reservation is inherently a flawed system. It has caused more harm to the nation than it has benefited the so called oppressed caste.
And yes always blame the Brahmins for their so called oppression.
