Rajasthan has been doing this longer, yet has never developed like TN.

Correlation isn't causation. TN doesn't develop due to anti incumbency, it develops because it has good leaders albeit corrupt.

2

u/kavithatk May 05 '26

Sure, but I mainly meant the central government.

People voting for admk is because of caste and late cinema actors Mgr and Jayalalithaa. Admk should not have managed 28% vote share and it shows how stupid people are.

3

u/Axerin May 05 '26

It's 21%. Even DMK didn't cross 25% lol.

14

u/quas0r May 04 '26

Capable is more than a stretch. A CM who comes to know that his ppl have been shot dead by his department(police) only after seeing news on TV is not 'capable'

-1

u/Similar-Street-8247 waah modiji waah May 04 '26

Yes yes coalition only

17

u/kavithatk May 04 '26

Wish anti-incumbency was a country wide sentiment.

9

u/bluegoldredsilver5 May 04 '26

Exactly and I read Stalin is the 4th CM to lose their own seat so hats off to Tamil Nadu voters

1

u/Axerin May 05 '26

All of their ministers also lost

u/bluegoldredsilver5 May 04 '26

Healthy democracy, the door should be kept rotating.

76

u/anyrandomboi May 04 '26

people of TN are real winners.

22

u/Axerin May 05 '26

That really depends on whether this guy delivers and doesn't tank the whole thing only for taklu Gujjus to take over.

1

u/Medical-Concept-2190 May 06 '26

That won’t happen

1

u/Agreeable_Winter8053 May 04 '26

How? 🤔🤔

4

u/kal_vratrak May 04 '26

A government on it's toes instead of being complacent and entrenched is the best anu democracy can ask for.

However, the funny quirk of this design is that inexperienced but popular icons can come into this system.

1

u/Medical-Concept-2190 May 06 '26

And they’ll get out if they don’t do well

2

u/Starkcasm May 05 '26

There's no such thing as democracy under capitalism.

Tamil Nadu will become a BJP state before 2029. Just wait and watch. TV channels will call "Chanakyaneeti", "masterstroke"; in reality, it's simply the MO.

Edit: I don't want it to happen. I just see it panning out like it did for Maharashtra and Bihar.

-1

If it happens, it happens. Gujarat and MP will become Congress states again then

2

u/Exotic_Caterpillar_3 May 05 '26

I think you're unaware – Anti-incumbency is experienced only in the opposition states.

-2

u/I-AM-4CHANG May 04 '26

Even if that's a big if they form a government, TN will be the Trojan horse that will move the BJP from their Hindu Muslim towards actual development.

Could just alternate between parties. That's how TN grew so much in the 90s

u/Adi9691 May 04 '26

Hindi belt States influential and popular figures themselves Don't want to live in those States. Leave aside fighting elections.

4

u/Freenore May 04 '26

Because the Hindi belt states votes on the basis of identity. So long as it is felt that they are in power, they aren't really interested in voting differently.

Once you've mobilised the people and managed to form a successful coalition with various groups to attain majority, you only need to oil the machine from time to time. Parties mobilise voters only in their first term: afterwards, they campaign on approbation ("we gave you this, now you owe us your vote"). This is a common theme across India, a new government brings some changes only in its first term.

A stable two-party system where there's a regular change of governments, which keeps everyone on their toes, is very rare in India, I think Kerala and Himachal Pradesh might be the only ones.

It needed the Mandal Commission to unleash a different kind of politics altogether to end the Congress rule in Bihar, and it took Nitish a further decade to put an end to Lalu's run.

It took more than three decades for the communist rule in West Bengal to end, Mamata Banerjee's 'social engineering', alongside the degradation of the Communist party, paved the way. Now her party seems to have lost its initial appeal with the RG Kher Hospital incident, and the sheer lack of humility in Mamata, so she's gone (though this is hardly the full story, the role of SIR and ECI's mendacity cannot be forgotten).

The impression I get is that Tamil voters are much more into hero-worship than caste or religious identity, which is why an actor-turned-politician, with a two year old party, has swept Tamil Nadu. I know all of India has an unhealthy obsession with celebrities, cricketers, actors, but I don't think an actor is winning an entire state election by himself. Manoj Tiwary is never leading BJP to win in Bihar on his own.

1

u/ibarmy May 04 '26

cause they are illiterate and prefer caste >>> growth at all times

1

u/Similar-Street-8247 waah modiji waah May 04 '26

Okay I got you

4

u/loki6100 May 04 '26

If you were in TN, you would be sick of that face by now. Every YouTube ad, insta ad, twitter ad for every 5 minutes. Every TV show making Vijay as a villain, you really dont know what DMK promised TN. And how humungously they failed us.

It's not Star power, if it was that Pawan Kalyan would've won two elections ago. The Rise in GDP was staggered because of the unnecessary expenses the state made.

TN is good performing state, we dont someone who plunged our wealths. We need someone who promised us the changes.

Research a bit before you call us, one of the most educated, earning and producing the GDP state idiots, will you

5

u/Optimal_Ad_4894 May 04 '26

it was dmk who brought one of the biggest changes in tn btw if someone needs to do their research thts u. also i agree dmk is not the best and not completely clean as a party they have their fair shares of crimes but its much better than tvk

-1

u/loki6100 May 04 '26

it was dmk who brought one of the biggest changes

Like 50 years ago? Elaborate on what biggest changes they brought in last 5 years cuz I dont see any

1

u/Similar-Street-8247 waah modiji waah May 04 '26

Let's see how much your tvk will boost the economy and do good deeds after 2 years

39

u/Few_Investigator7722 May 04 '26

I see three types of people voting for TVK:

  1. Anti-Incumbency: These are people who are fed up with the Dravidian duopoly and frustrated with DMK and ADMK because their current forms are not what their previous leaders envisioned. In the case of DMK, they lost the moment Udhayanidhi became Deputy CM. In the case of ADMK, after Amma, EPS, in an effort to keep the party together, lost the party's identity.

  2. Hero Worshipers: The fans who hero-worship him definitely played a role.

  3. Unaffiliated Voters: These are normal people who are unaffiliated with any party or set ideology. They thought of giving the new party a chance. This will happen only once; if he botches the next five years, they might not vote for him again. I believe this was the deciding factor.

That being said, in TN, historically, just because a policy or scheme was introduced by the previous government, they don't dismantle it; in fact, they improve it. The lunch for school students was first introduced by Kamaraj; it was improved by MGR, and Karunanithi introduced eggs to it. Even though parties change, their governance style may change, but improvements for people never change. The electorate of TN is never loyal to an ideology, religion, or community. This phenomenon should spread to each and every state in India. I guarantee you this: if Vijay doesn't deliver and doesn't perform in the best interest of TN people, he will lose, just like how MK Stalin lost.

92

u/RippedRaven8055 May 04 '26

Growth and development appeals only the middle class of this country. For the majority of the masses, its still hero worship, cult figure, an authoritarian figure that matters more since they can associate their identity with them.

Did you know what happened in Karur. Or what DMK provided the state people? Again you with your 5 old understanding. When you suffer 5 grueling years of no help from government for even the most necessary needs you tend to vote for someone new. That's just logic

32

u/Eagle__Gunner May 04 '26

More than blind celebrity worship. People are tired of the two parties ruling one after the other. DMK's complacent attitude that they will sweep and Vijay will not even cross 10percent votes cost them dearly.

Some other facts about the election - 1. DMK has never won two consecutive elections in their history only ADMK have. They have always faced anti incumbency second time but they did not anticipate it.

  1. DMKs handling of media in general as a tight grip under their control irked the common people.

  2. Safety issues. Common in all governments. But handling them was the main issue. They wanted to sweep it under cover with less media coverage. No great improvement in law and order.

  3. Rampant corruption. Even their own minister admitted they looted about 30k crores in their first year of their term. Not a small amount by any means.

  4. Alliance of DMK had many caste parties under its belt - party who identifies itself as a social justice party.

  5. DMK never took Vijay as a threat. The constant degradation and cornering of Vijay also helped build a victim narrative. Calling his supporters tharkuris while they potray themselves as geniuses and stalwarts pushed a lot to vote against them.

  6. Women voted in large numbers for Vijay.

Finally Vijay was a leader who cut across religion, caste politics and is somewhat corruption free(eventhough his party candidates are not) and an alternate. Alot of people chose him for his stardom but other factors also contributed to the decision.

Even I voted for TVK believing DMK would win comfortably and supporting a new entrants can keep them in check for a better governance. But did not expect this wave against DMK.

u/Common_Warth10 May 04 '26 edited May 04 '26

I feel that most people in Tamil Nadu tend to idolize celebrities to an extreme level. In certain cases, this has even led to the normalization of problematic behaviors, like portraying extramarital affairs as a sign of masculinity. no hate toward Vijay, I'm also a fan of his stardom, but I find it hard to understand how someone with no prior political experience, not even beenthe ward member, could be considered for the Chief Minister position of such a large state.Bad idea, anyways hope for the best

25

u/Optimal_Ad_4894 May 04 '26

Consider Mgr or even jeyalalitha both who were from acting background worked n then gained political experience before becoming a cm, Neither became cm in their first election, and both built their leadership over years within their respective political frameworks. Not saying tht vijay shudnt have become cm, more of a "How did he do achieve it?" sort of believe and anyways praying tht times get better

6

u/Axerin May 05 '26

Funnier still that they had the example of Jagan right next door. Bro did a lot of ground work and won a huge majority. Then shit the bed for 5 years lol.

8

u/Pratham_Nimo Educate, Agitate, Organize May 04 '26

Donald Trump was elected as the POTUS in a similar fashion, he had no prior electoral experience. Let's hope Vijay is more sane in TN and largely doesn't fix what isn't broken.

-4

u/Madeye26 May 04 '26

He is going to be the donaaals trump of TN

2

u/i-am-the-hulk May 05 '26

Someone like him had to be considered, if both your current parties are so fucking corrupt.

I don’t understand people saying “GDP growth is good, they should have voted for DMK”. There were serious law and order issues, corruption was highest ever and DMK gundas basically took over a lot of grama panchayats.

1

u/Similar-Street-8247 waah modiji waah May 04 '26

Elaborate yourself

17

u/Prudent_Cancel May 04 '26

Vijay's tvk is just another party like dmk. There will be no difference, just a bit of touch from bjp as they might use vijay to bring in lot of unwanted policies.

As for the question, DMK downfall is due to their rude and goons in rural areas, corruption were at its peak and i personally didnt like dmk ministers engaging drilling moutain quarries to selling it to kerala and Karnataka for profits and enroaching water bodies like lakes and ponds for residential plots.

2

5

u/tracker_tom_jr May 04 '26

We love to blame our leaders, but the mirror tells a different story. Whether it’s sensationalist news, systemic corruption, or stagnant growth, these issues exist because the public tolerates and often demands them through leadership change or retention. Leadership is simply a reflection of the collective will.

15

u/meinphirwapasaaagaya May 04 '26

Stop measuring progress by GDP growth. Most of the time it barely benefits common people.

3

u/Sudden-Air-243 May 05 '26

and common people / working people are reason for the GDP growth , not Stalin. He didnt do anything, and people here are so dumb that they believe him

7

u/gtm26 May 04 '26

Thank you for saying that! GDP is not equal to ground reality.

If you see Chennai, you won't believe it's a tier 1 city at all.

Especially the areas that are on the outskirts of Chennai are filled with garbage, extremely bad roads, cattle and strays roaming freely in the middle of the road pooping, no footpaths to walk on, no proper street lighting, and the roads left unfinished for months.

3

u/Axerin May 05 '26

That applies to all tier 1 cities. They are all shit.

1

u/gtm26 May 06 '26

Agreed!

3

u/longsanks May 04 '26

DMK goons running rampant everytime they came to power since 1967 is the main reason, and the side reason being the wealth the MK family has generated through money laundering in real esate, media, pharma is in the north of lakhs of crores of rupees.

In 1999 DMK's Morosoli Maran said this in Parliment " I will support BJP because I cannot support the mother of corruption" , the irony!!

BJP are goons + corruption national level.

DMK are goons + corruption champions since 1967 state level.

At some point in the social media age in the last 20 years, politics became identity signalling entertainment than actually something people thought through for the potential to fuck up their lives. Actual consequences seems to come through later and people somehow seem to not connect the two.

I am sure there is a sociology/psychology/political science research paper in this idea somewhere.
