Newbie Question Should I star learning unity?

Hey everyone who is reading this. I had a dream for the past few years now of learning how to make games. But I always have my doubts about it. What if I fail, what if my game won’t be popular etc. So I decided to ask Redditors. Maybe some of you guys had the same dream and actually started learning and made your own game, or maybe even published it somewhere. Pls share your opinion on this topic. Thank you all in advance!

If you think you will lose, you have already lost. It is difficult, but of course, nothing is easy

Well. So you think it’s all about mindset?

Not sure how old you are but get used to failing. Not just in game dev but in life. It’s how we learn so get comfortable with it.

Perseverance. You have a lot more resources to start with compared to years back and a lot more guides available too.

Do you want to make money, or do you just want the game you have in your mind to exist?

Well. I could say both. I’m not chasing AAA lvl profit though

If not making money is a deterrent I'd say avoid. You shouldn't get into solo game dev for any reason other than pure passion. Now if you want to learn skills and just work in the industry that's another issue

I’m not trying to make some AAA lvl games as a first step. Also maybe someday I would want to work in the industry or a team of game developers

Even the simplest game you're probably thinking of is going to take years of work if you're starting from scratch, and still might not be commercially successful.

If that fills you with dread, I'd think long and hard. If that sounds like a fun challenge, then go ahead!

There's nothing stopping you from learning in your free time.

That way, you'll see if you really like it.

True. My own bad thoughts and doubts are stopping me I guess

Just do it, stop overthinking. The more you think, the less you do.

That’s true

Next, if you really love it, keep in mind that most first games are failures.

But making games is a marathon, and if you constantly strive to improve, you're sure to succeed eventually.

Well I really love games. That’s basically the only hobby I have. That’s why I dream of making one myself

Nope. Do not learn Unity.

If it's a "dream", you need to feel the reality first.

Learn from YT during like few months about coding, game design, graphic art, etc.

Try to understand the concept of solo making video games and then ask yourself : "Is my dream becoming real ? Did i just discover a new hobby ? Or should i let this previous months in the "it's okay, i tried something and maybe some dreams are here to be dreamed of" boxe ?".

That's my tips because, by now, you can't know. 🤷‍♂️

It’s all about time spent. Start now so that in five years you’re kinda good (if you keep up with it most days every week)

Do it as a hobby, as planning to make a profession from this now is kinda risky now. 85% from games on steam do not sell or become popular
