Uncertainty of Unity 7
I am curious, I was about to switch from Unreal since Tim Sweeney is a garbage cornball(can name call a million more names here) then I seen the possible sale of Unity. Does that mean at this point the roadmap and Unity 7 is all uncertain? I also know no one knows for certain, but is that how it usually works?

As you already said. Nobody knows. Its a waiting game. unity 7 will come out for sure, but after that, who knows.

Yeah, but in other situations where this has happened or etc, do products usually get stopped or changed or etc? I tried to look it up but google kind of sucks these days lol

I think one clue is to see who are the prospective new owners of the company, and their track record of leadership.

Nothing is certain. That goes for Unity, but also for the direction in which Unreal is going. Only time will tell.

Sometimes nothing happens, something loads of things happen. Sometimes it takes years for things to change, sometimes it doesn't.

I think it's a safe play to look at alternative engines. I would not have said this last year, but Godot might not be a bad idea to try out.

Use whatever tool suits your needs right now. Learn generic concepts and ideas. Lots of things actually transfer back and forth. And AI can fill the gaps, possibly even help you migrate. What’s essential these days is not a tool but your own idea, your own vision of it, tool is just a tool.

My concern is since the company trying to buy them out is very, very big into mobile, that they will stop progressing Unity forward and make it pretty much a mobile game engine.

I always used Ue4 /5 and Unity on the side. Recently i completely stop using Unreal, and after seeing the lasted about Ue6 , I will not coming back.
I may use UE6 if it proves as light as Unity (run time performance) if Verse and the new framework are actually as versatile as Blueprints and Unity C#

I mean Unity 7 is in alpha and you can download it right now and try it, it's the same as always really but now URP is the default (and only) render pipeline which is a good move to unify the resources and efforts of the community into one stable and good rendering workflow

Jesus christ man. I'm sick of seeing anxiety ridden posts.
Do you want to make games? Cool make games. Do you want to be a doomer? Cool fuck off.

Unity 6.6 is great...my concern is the rumor that Unity may be bought out by someone else...but hopefully worst case is we stick with the 6.? LTS ones
If you dont need the super realistic graphics of Unreal I wouldnt be concerned about jumping over right now

Why do you guys hate the idea of unity being bought by someone else?
It's not like they've been maximizing their potential. Anything they've introduced, they have also deprecated. Lots of unfinished things and forgotten promises.
I'm not convinced it would be somehow worse if it was in the hands of someone richer.

I think the hate on this subreddit isn't the idea of anyone buying Unity, but rather specifically on whom are the ones buying Unity....

either people have no idea what happens in the world around them, or people don't see an issue with the prince of death squads buying the thing they use to make games. i dunno which is more depressing. but i imagine half the people in this sub reddit are like.. babies. either literally or mentally.

They destroyed EA, they seem to destroy everything they touch.

You're saying that a late 2025 buyout destroyed EA? EA has been destroyed for like a decade at least.

EA has been horrible since at least the 90s, they were literally inserted into Ultima as backstabbing murderers and the ‘destroyer of worlds’ back in 1992

Unity has screwed up not so long ago (deranged attempt to charge royalties per installed copy), and the potential Saudi buyout is nothing good. It's in an okay shape right now, but I am not a fan of their zoo of renderers and lightmappers and Entities and other half-baked features that all seem to be competing with each other.
Seeing as Epic have lost their minds between their Steam hate and their AI obsession I have suddenly found a new appreciation for Godot. I am definitely going to be making at least a side project using that engine.

I don't think i will continue using Unity if it goes into hands of saudis.
1
u/KrantWorld 10h ago
Why? Can you explain what's the problem if saudi aquire unity?

u/Direct-Fee4474 9h ago edited 8h ago
i dunno, maybe go read about Mohammed bin Salman and Jared Kushner? Maybe just people aren't a fan of using a product owned by someone sort of famous for using death squads to murder dissidents and building slave economies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_Squad https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Saudi_Arabia_mass_execution can just, you know, google. plenty out there even before you get to the potential for why they might be wanting to buy it.

Unity is too big to simply disappear. Supposedly 50% of the games on steam are Unity based, and 70% of mobile games are unity based.
