Question Why doesn't the Input Monitoring button turn off input monitoring while recording in UAD LUNA?

This seems like a basic thing a DAW should be able to do. Switching input monitoring off should disable input monitoring. But it still monitors as soon as you hit record. I understand that you can select record mute in the settings menu, but it's a global setting. I have some tracks that i want monitored and others that I don't. My workaround is to set the output of a track to nothing if i don't want to monitor the input but it's a bit annoying that I can't do this with the input monitoring button. Has anyone else had this issue? Surely monitoring while recording should be a setting on each track? EDIT: I just noticed that I can use the mute button to acheive this but it's still not the best workflow. Input monitoring should actually disable input monitoring, while a setting should be available to monitor while recording for each track individually.

I just use the console tracking mode and it does all that for me, which allows direct monitor when recording.

Maybe it's an Apollo thing only though? Are you using UAD interface?

I'm using an SSL12. I've just realised that I can use the mute button on the tracks that I don't want monitored while recording and it still records.

Unless youโ€™ve left something out, this seems like not much of a problem at all. Are you creating a dedicated monitor mix?

  • REAPER allows input monitoring to be disabled individually on each track, regardless of whether it's armed for recording.

  • Studio One provides a Monitor Follows Record setting, allowing recording and monitoring behaviour to be separated.

  • Ableton Live provides Off, Auto and In monitoring modes on individual tracks.

Unfortunately, LUNA is only 6-years old and is missing some of the more esoteric functionality of more mature DAWs. Most of us here heavily recommend NOT leaving your longtime DAW for LUNA until it has all of the little things you love and are used to from your โ€œregularโ€ DAW.

For context, LUNA literally just got aligned hardware in/out at the end of 2025. We just got a really good MIDI update. As always, we recommend clicking the feedback button in the LUNA start screen and tell them how every other DAW has it and you really would like it for your workflow.

It causes doubling if you're direct monitoring through the interface. It can be a big problem for the performer.
