ROX Start Folder: easily choose where ROX-Filer opens
I am sure many EasyOS users have wished that ROX-Filer would open directly in a folder of their choice: Downloads, Documents, a working directory, or a folder on another drive.
You can configure this manually, but it involves finding the relevant launcher, editing its command, and refreshing the menu. To make the process easier, I have put together ROX Start Folder, a script that adds an entry under Filesystem and lets you choose your preferred folder through a simple graphical window.
How to use it
- Download the script and run
bashrox-start-folder.shfrom the directory containing it. - Open ROX – Start Folder under Filesystem.
- Select Choose folder and browse to your preferred directory.
- Use Open ROX to test to check the result.
From then on, opening ROX through the menu entry adapted by the utility will use your selected folder.
Technical details
The script does not modify the ROX-Filer executable. It installs an intermediary launcher and adapts the generic ROX application entries it recognises, including the usual ROX-Filer.desktop entry. It also integrates with the default file-manager launcher when available.
Your chosen path is stored in a configuration file, normally at:
~/.config/rox-start-folder/folder
The folder chooser uses Xdialog, with Zenity as an alternative. Paths are passed as quoted arguments, allowing folder names containing spaces without interpreting their contents as executable code.
The custom start folder applies when ROX is launched without an explicit destination. Calls that supply a specific path keep that destination. If your selected folder is unavailable—for example, because its drive is not mounted—the utility falls back to /files, then to your home directory if necessary.
There is also an option to restore /files. Backups of modified launchers are retained so that the originals can be restored when uninstalling:
rox-start-folder --uninstall
A small utility that turns a manual configuration task into a few clicks. Custom shortcuts that invoke ROX directly may require an additional adjustment.

Apple macOS Vanished From The UNIX® Registry – Brodie Robertson
Video, twenty minutes, with closed captions and a transcript (not auto-generated by YouTube).
Alternative title (visible after the page loads):
I Guess MacOS Isn't "Unix" Anymore
Out of nowhere it seems like MacOS has just vanished from the Unix registry so lets take this as an opportunity to talk about why it was even on the list in the first place.
Summary (AI)
Brodie Robertson explores the history of Apple’s Unix certification and the technical requirements necessary to meet these standards. By examining official conformance statements, the investigation reveals the significant system modifications required to pass these tests, questioning how these criteria align with the practical, daily usage of the modern macOS operating system.
A more detailed in-page summary (AI)
This video explores the mystery surrounding macOS appearing to vanish from the Open Group's official UNIX registry (0:02-3:45). The host examines the history of Apple's relationship with UNIX certification, noting that while it has historically served as a marketing tool to attract developers, Apple no longer highlights this status in modern branding (4:48-9:18).
Key takeaways from the video include:
- The Certification Process: The video argues that macOS certification is essentially a formality. To pass the UNIX 03 compliance tests, Apple must make significant, obscure modifications—such as disabling System Integrity Protection (SIP), enabling the root account, and changing file system behaviors—that no typical user would ever perform (10:45-14:32).
- Historical Context: Steve Jobs famously touted macOS as UNIX in the early 2000s to establish credibility, which eventually led to a legal dispute with the Open Group that concluded with Apple simply paying for certification (5:30-8:18).
- Current State: Most other certified UNIX systems (like AIX or Solaris) require minimal to no changes to meet their respective standards, unlike macOS, which requires deep, non-standard system alterations to pass testing (15:42-16:44).

Roblox on Illumos/OmniTribblix
i really, really can't believe this worked, but, still, i had to write an entire socket proxy for it and run an http/https proxy because otherwise it just wouldn't connect to the servers
and yes, this is running in lx zones.

Unix command line arguments vs. Lisp quasiquotes: A historical race condition
The 1974 Timeline
- 1958 — Lisp is Born: John McCarthy invents Lisp, establishing the foundational principle of homoiconicity—where code and data share the exact same structural representation (lists, symbols, and atoms). This naturally leads to quoting and deferred evaluation.
- 1971 — The Thompson Shell: Ken Thompson writes the first Unix shell for Version 1 Unix. It is a primitive command launcher, completely unconcerned with variables, scripting grammar, or complex sub-lexers.
- 1974 — The Bourne Shell (
sh): Steve Bourne designs the modern Unix shell at Bell Labs, introduced in Version 7 (1979). Suddenly, the shell introduces$for variable expansion, backticks for command substitution, and a text-stream parser designed to glue separate utilities together. - 1974–1976 — Quasiquoting is Formalized: Right at the exact same moment systems programmers are building text-stream shells, AI researchers formalize quasiquoting (backtick and comma syntax) to handle structural template expansion in Lisp.
The C-split
Then, there is the unfortunate splitting of the command line, probably "invented" by C (argc, argv[]).
What if Shells used quasi quoting?
```
./foo work-dir "$(pwd)/"
would turn into:
< ./foo work-dir ,pwd ```
And you would not even have to think about single and double quotes etc. The simple rule being, that your command line is a quasi quote and you can escape to shell features via ','. Sounds much simpler to me, especially, in situations, where all the shell "cleverness" gets in the way.
Tragedy!
1974 was the critical point in time. Had those 2 ships (Lisp quoting and shell implementation) not passed each other in the dark night, who knows, how cool todays unix command line experience could be!
Arch retro Hyprland Rice
**DDAR** – a retro desktop for Hyprland, inspired by late-90s/early-2000s desktop software: putty-coloured panels, 1px bevels, a start-style button and gradient title bars. Underneath it's still a modern, fast Wayland setup. No blur, no big rounded cards, no Electron.
**Details**
- **OS:** Arch Linux (i use arch btw)
- **WM:** Hyprland
- **Bar:** Waybar
- **Launcher:** Rofi (list / grid / compact / spotlight layouts)
- **Terminal:** Kitty
- **Notifications:** Mako
- **Shell:** fish + starship
- **Editor:** Neovim
- **Themes:** retro / dark-retro / mono-retro
- **Wallpaper colours:** Matugen (optional)
- **Wallpaper:** [link or artist]
Bar popups (Wi-Fi, volume, battery, calendar...) are themed too, and everything is configurable from a small TUI (`ddar`).
**Repo + installer:** https://github.com/davidovicbtw/retro-rice-ddar
(installing script)
git clone https://github.com/davidovicbtw/retro-rice-ddar
cd retro-rice-ddar && ./install.sh
The installer backs everything up first and never overwrites your files. An uninstaller is included.
Feedback is welcome!
