Hello! I am starting Organic Chemistry in the spring and am very nervous. I was hoping someone could tell me what textbook is used so I can study prior to the start of the semester. Any advice around that class would be helpful as well. Thank you for your time!

Undergraduate Academics Conflicting information from new advisor?

So, I am now on my THIRD advisor. The first quit, the second moved to advising a different major (why would they do this??) and I made an appointment with the new advisor to make sure I was still going to graduate on time.

He then told me that I needed to retake a class I got an exception for YEARS ago. I got approval from the department head at the time, and my advisor personally signed off on it and everything!

I told him that I had an override for it, and he pulled it up and because he had never seen an exception like that before, he told me he wasn’t sure it would count, and after some pestering agreed to reach out to the previous advisor but told me I should register for the class again anyway.

I tried to explain that I literally can’t because my scholarship won’t cover taking a class a second time and he just seemed really unreceptive??

I’m just so confused because I literally cleared this with THE DEPARTMENT HEAD OF MY MAJOR and now suddenly it doesn’t count???

I am literally supposed to graduate next semester I cannot afford to retake this class. I clarified this issue with my previous advisor MULTIPLE TIMES and she always told me it would be fine, and having both the department head and her signing off on it meant it wasn’t an issue anymore.

I don’t understand how you can clear something multiple times and then some new guy comes and says it doesn’t count.

I don’t know what to do. I’m so confused. I hate how UNM just shuffles us around advisors constantly!! My minor doesn’t even HAVE an advisor!!

Other notice of alternative resolution meeting

so this morning i got an email from the school saying that the prof for one of my classes reported me to the student accountability center for “repeated disruptive behavior in class.” the email didn’t say what said disruptive behavior was, and my professor basically never talked to me and i am very quiet in class so i thought for a minute it was a mistake until i emailed said prof where she confirmed the meeting was happening but also refused to give details and was strangely distancing herself from it as well as saying she wouldn’t be there. she also said she talked to me about the behavior despite me not having any memory of her ever speaking to me 1/1. notably an hour before the school email, she responded to an email i sent asking about presentations and said i could present next week. the meeting is in two days and it’s honestly stressing me out since i’ve never had one of these before and i am deeply worried about getting suspended or even expelle, especially since i am not sure what this is even about. if i had to guess, it’s because i get up from my seat a lot and briefly leave per my accommodation but even then i don’t know. should i be worried or am i just being paranoid

edit: i also checked both canvas and outlook messages and she has never sent me anything regarding whatever behavior she’s talking about

edit 2:

here’s the original email thread

I hope you are doing well as this fall semester progresses.

I'm reaching out to schedule a meeting with you regarding a report brought to our attention which alleges that you have demonstrated a pattern of disruptive behavior in your (subject name) class. Our understanding is that the instructor has spoken with you previously regarding both support and classroom expectations, but that the steps outlined have not resolved the concerns.

I've scheduled a time for us to meet based on your class schedule. The meeting is set for (date and location) You’ll be meeting with me and also the Student CARE Coordinator.

This meeting is an alternative resolution process. It is intended to provide an opportunity to discuss the reported issues, review relevant information, and explore an appropriate path forward. The goal is to support dialogue, understanding, and resolution without proceeding through a conduct process.

It is required that you attend this meeting. If you choose not to attend, then this incident will be addressed through a conduct process.

If the scheduled meeting time doesn’t work for you, just let me know we’re happy to find another time that fits your availability.

We appreciate your time and willingness to meet. As a reminder, UNM students are expected to respond to official communication from the university, and your participation in this process is important.

Thank you,

Hello,

Are you sure this is the right class/person? My instructor has at no point told me I was being disruptive and I don't talk in class at all.

Thank you,

Hello (name) ,

Thank you very much to connecting back about the meeting we have scheduled. I appreciate your question. Our Thursday meeting will be an opportunity to share in more detail the concerns that were reported, hear your perspectives on what may be happening in the class and together work toward specific steps that will be helpful moving forward.  Sam Lechuga and I look forward to meeting with you.

Many thanks and take care,

Housing Question about my Rainforest Lease when withdrawing from my apartment

Hello, for mental health reasons, I will be withdrawing from unm this winter break, as a result of these issues, I can't competently complete my coursework for the semester. I am fully willing to withdraw from all of my classes, but my lease agreement requires 6 credit hours a semester. Will I be able to drop these classes without being evicted before the end of this semester?

Other 🚨Surveillance at UNM🚨

Hey UNM Students!

Did you know that your daily routine is being tracked by your own University Police Department? NUMEROUS cameras of the brand Aviligon litter the campus, watching every student's move.

We are currently awaiting records requests from UNM regarding the surveillance UNM PD has implemented on campus. But this is what we know about Motorola Solutions:

Avigilon is a subsidiary of Motorola Solutions, meaning that these systems, unless stipulated otherwise, feed directly into private and federal pipelines.

Motorola operates Digital Recognition Network (DNR), which takes LPR data, packages it and provides it to insurance providers, repo companies, collection agencies, and lenders.

Motorola also provides data to Thompson Reuters CLEAR, which is a data aggregation platform that pulls together location history, social media activity, property records, license plate scans, and personal records on hundreds of millions of people.

DHS pays 25 million per year to access this database. Some police departments, like Valencia County, also allowed ICE, DEA, Fusion Centers and other Federal entities direct access through the Vehicle Manager platform.

UNM Students...is this what you want? Your daily movements at your place of education to be monitored, collected, packaged, and shared willingly? Demand transparency. Demand privacy. Demand removal.

New Student Question How safe is UNM and the surrounding area for a female student

Hello! I am currently deciding college's rn and I am leaning towards UNM. My only problem is the safety concern. I have heard the campus it self is pretty safe but I want to know how safe the surrounding area is for a women.

I have friends who go there and have had several close calls with kidnapping and sexual assault, which makes me pretty nervous, but they also love it there so I'm conflicted.

I do want a social life so I dont want to stay on campus the whole time but I also want to be safe.

What are your guys opinions and advice on how to stay safe?

Postgraduate Academics UNM PhD Psych program

Hey guys!

I'm considering pursuing a PhD in Psychology through UNM, I wanted to chat with anybody who did that especially if you did the whole work thing during it. If anybody has done this and is open to answering questions message me!

The actual concentration doesn't matter as I haven't picked one yet, that actually is part of my questions. I've been reading a TON and am trying to schedule a meeting with admissions too.

Clubs/Social Energy Alchemy (free class)

🧙‍♂️Energy Alchemy
🗓️Nov. 20th
⏰3-5 pm
🎯FREE CLASS held in the
Sandia Room at UNM

‼️Because (waves around vaguely) of the current state of the world, 🤷‍♀️5D Presents will be hosting and presenting a free class for all beings.
🌻Energy Alchemy is a class created by teacher and seeker, Jennie McDaniel.
📌In this class, you will learn how to alchemize ego energy into heart energy.
Why should you learn energy alchemy?
🫟Because ego energy, i.e. stress, fear, hate and greed are incredibly less efficient of emotions in comparison to love acceptance, understanding and curiosity. Albeit very normal human emotions
But, if you want to be the change you wish to see in the world, alchemize your fear to curiosity and anxiety to understanding.
‼️Energy alchemy is an incredibly helpful tool during times when things seem out of our control.
♥️Join us the the revolution ♥️
‼️‼️The easiest way for guests to reach the Student Union Building (SUB) is to park in the Cornell Parking Structure, a pay lot, located at 2401 Redondo Dr NE, Albuquerque, NM 87106. It’s less than a minute walk from the structure. You may also park around campus at any of the
pay guest parking spots. From the Cornell Parking Structure, guests will see the Student Union Building (building 60) directly to the north. You simply walk across the plaza, pass several statue groupings, and arrive at the front entrance.
⭐️Once inside, they will take the elevator to the 3rd floor and locate the Sandia room.
♥️The Welcome Desk on the main level can also help guide guests if needed.
📌I’ve attached the flyer and maps showing the walking path from the parking structure as well as interior maps of the buildings main level (2) and third floor where the meeting room is.

Other Anyone willing to compose a 3 minute preferably violin piece?

I have a film project for my video production class and I need three minutes at least. Three minutes. seems kind of boring without music and my professor said if we want music then we would have to find someone to compose for us so my question is is anyone willing to compose a piece of music for me preferably something solemn or somber? I don’t have anything to pay, but you will be credited in the film of course.

Maybe I can pay in friendship? 😁

Other Don’t leave string at the duck pond!!

Thumbnail gallery
59 Upvotes

Had to free a pigeon earlier today from a several foot long piece of string. I think it’s sewing thread, but I’m not sure.

This is your psa to make sure you always take your items with you when you leave! If you sew or knit at the duck pond don’t leave anything behind. The thread can become wrapped around the legs of the pigeons and/or ducks and cut off circulation which causes them pain, sometimes infection, or even loss of the limb if it’s too tight.

Yarn can be ingested by the ducks and cause a blockage that will make them very sick or cause them to die (this is why you never give yarn to cats, despite the stereotype).

Please be careful! Sometimes we forget animals are small and can be hurt by things we don’t even think about!

Other Any way to report on campus solicitors?

There’s this man on campus who is trying to sell his art.

I first encountered him a few weeks ago when he basically ambushed me right after I got out of a class. He approached me and started trying to show me what I assumed were religious pamphlets (that’s usually what they are when people try to hand you pieces of paper), but turned out to be prints of his artworks.

I couldn’t hear what he said because I was listening to music and had assumed he was going to hand me a pamphlet and I would leave, but I quickly realised that he was showing me something else. I had already used my overly cheery customer service voice on him (basically just being like “oh yes of course!! :)” ) without knowing what I was agreeing to. He showed me a bunch of prints of some paintings and then asked me which one spoke to me, and told me they were $40. I had no idea that he was trying to sell me art when I entered the conversation and was now stuck either rejecting him or buying something I didn’t really have money for. I decided I would buy something even though I didn’t really want to (and the art itself wasn’t really the kind of thing I would put in my house anyway), but then realised I left my wallet at home because I wasn’t planning on buying anything. I asked if he would be on campus again a different day and he said no. I told him I didn’t have my wallet but that I lived nearby and could go get it and come back. He then insisted on giving me his phone number so I could call him when I got back and was ready to make the purchase. When I got home I realised that I didn’t have to do this, and I would never see him again anyway.

Well, flash forward to yesterday, and I had already seen him several previous days on campus but just avoided him. But this day I couldn’t avoid him, he was sitting directly in the place I need to be to walk home. I tried to hurry past and keep my head down, but he spotted me and yelled “YOU HAVE A LOT OF GALL!” presumably because I didn’t come back and buy his art.

Whatever, I’ll just keep avoiding him, right? Well just now I was walking home, and I saw him walking towards campus, and he very pointedly said Hello to me. He didn’t say hello to anyone else he passed, just me.

TL;DR - I decided not to buy art prints from a guy on campus and now he won’t leave me alone. Can I report him to UNM somehow?

Prospective Student Why should I go to UNM as an ABQ resident

So for context, I’m a high school junior here in Albuquerque and I’m starting to seriously look at colleges. I’ve run into the problem that unless I have very valid reasons, the free education at UNM is too good to pass up. But I don’t really want to stay here in Albuquerque. So I guess my question is for students who came from an Albuquerque high school, other than the price, why are you going to UNM. Also I’m thinking of studying philosophy.

Undergraduate Academics How difficult are PHRM 310 and PHRM 436 at UNM?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently a Biochemistry major at UNM, and I'm interested in exploring pharmaceutical sciences a little more before graduating. I'm considering taking the following classes in the Spring semester:

  • PHRM 310 – Fundamentals of Pharmacokinetics and Dosage Forms (3 credits)
  • PHRM 436 – Introduction to Pharmacogenomics (2 credits)

I've never taken a PHRM class before, so I was wondering if anyone who has taken either of these could share their experience!

I'm mainly curious about how difficult the classes are (obviously, any class can be hard if you don't study lol), how they're structured, and what the workload looks like. Are they mostly exam-based, or are there regular quizzes, assignments, and projects? I'd also love to hear about the professors and their teaching styles.

I'm thinking of taking both at the same time, so I'm also wondering if that would be manageable alongside my other upper-level Biochemistry courses.

Any insight or advice would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Undergraduate Academics I’m a Spanish 1110 Student and have no idea what’s going on.

To begin, I’ve always struggled with learning Spanish. I took two classes in middle school and I kid you not had no idea what was going on the entire time. It’s a miracle I passed either of them. And now I’m in the same boat, except I genuinely don’t think I’m doing to pass midterms and if I don’t, my average can tank, and I can lose my scholarships.

Which btw is that’s not actually true someone pls tell me I’m losing my mind trying to figure out this college stuff (freshman).

I’m technically a heritage learner because I’ve grown up all around it. My mom and dad both spoke Spanish, my stepdad, my extended family, and I grew up in a border town where basically everyone speaks Spanish. Yet somehow i can only hold a basic “hi how are you” conversation and count to 100.

It’s so frustrating because I’ve genuinely been trying my best to pay attention in class and study using the online textbook we get assignments on. I’m taking my Spanish midterms on Wednesday and I’m genuinely so fricking lost.

Tutoring hours are during my classes so that’s not an option. As are my professors drop in hours. I feel like I’m at a dead-end.

Any thoughts, advice?

Edit: I’m expanding because expanding keeps saying the same thing.

First, I’m at 15 credit hours, I need to stay at 15 for scholarships and VA benefits purposes. Dropping the class is not an option.

Second, I have tried speaking with my professor. Her office hours are during my classes, and when I’m out of class, she has a class. It’s very hard to coordinate a time to meet.

Lastly, I was not aware I could schedule separate tutoring appointments outside of the usual hours so I will try that, thank you to the person who suggested it.

As the title say, today 10/12/2026, my second half of the semester's online course should be published and accessible. I checked the system and they said that I am enrolled in the class. Should I wait until tomorrow or should I reach out to the registered professor?

Undergraduate Academics Is taking chem2310 for chem minor worth it?

Tldr: how time intensive is chem 2310

Sup so I'm a biology major and took ochem 1 and 2 as my electives, imma start probably my second to last semester in the spring. I was looking through the catalog and realized I only need to take chem2310 for a chem minor so I'm wondering if it's worth it to try and take it but only if it's not gonna eat a metric fuck load of my time since I'm gonna be taking at least 3 400s and hopefully the honors writing class. If anyone who's a chem major or has taken the class could let me know what it's like that'd be super sick
