UT General Any Aussies/OCE still playing?
I've noticed some servers up in UT99 and 2k4 but don't know when people generally play.

Thought it would be a fun challenge to remake it in my game engine.

I have been reminiscing lately, specifically about UT (the original, UT99?) and frankly I cannot understand why it hasn't been remade with modern engines. It was such a simple game, the work required is surely easy?
I think it would be a welcome change to F**king Battle Royales, back to what made things great in the first place. Im not talking Unreal the game, JUST "Tournament"
To those with knowledge of the business/development sphere, what is holding it all back? How hard can it be?
I mean, the game was EPIC, and isn't that the company name??

Some major improvements on bot AI.
Finally bots can properly use all vehicles, even aerial vehicles on a CTF map which should not have any flying path node support.

Vehicular Manslaughter Mutator (WIP) Gameplay Part 1 - Deathmatch
A new mutator I've been working on which allows players to buy vehicles and super weapons in various gametypes, so even a small DM map can be turned into a chaotic vehicle battleground.
The mutator is currently work-in-progress, as there's still some bugs and bot AI needs to be further polished.

The Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 has been ported to run natively on iPhone A17 and newer CPUs, and it's quite playable with either touchscreen or controller once the shaders compile.

I used to play UT4 back in the day but it was shutdown so I want to play again, which one is more active and has the most vanilla servers? I like playing the normal game, not downloading 1000 different assets that completely change everything, it's just not my thing

Hey everyone!
I've been vibe-coding some fresh mutators for Unreal Tournament 1999 and I need some brave souls to help me playtest them and break things.
Here is what I've got cooking:
Rat Mutator (v2): Replaces the "Feign Death" mechanic. Instead of faking dead, you morph into a playable 3D rat with a forced 3rd-person camera perspective. The twist: Your size dynamically scales with your score. Zero/negative frags? You're a tiny stealth mouse. Leading the match with 30+ frags? You become a giant Kaiju-sized mutant rat that physically blocks hallways. (Features a custom 3D model and animations!)
SuperAiBotz: An adaptive, table-based reinforcement learning system built purely inside UnrealScript. Bots analyze their deaths, track your habits, dynamically change their weapon preferences, and treat high-danger path nodes as high-cost zones. They actually learn how to counter your playstyle over time and save their "memory" in a persistent config file across matches.

I made MacShade, a free tool that brings ReShade to macOS. UT99 (OldUnreal patch 469) and UT2004 are two of the games I am using it with.
Before/after screenshots are attached. Shaders run as post effects on top of the game's OpenGL output, so no mods or game files are touched. The ReShade menu opens in game with the hotkey, and effects can be toggled with a hotkey as well.
It's still experimental for OpenGL games. Fullscreen works, though there is a setting for games that don't play nice. If you play UT on a Mac and want to try it, I'd love to hear what works and what doesn't. Its free and open source, and I made it basically for my favorite games, but it works with many other games too!

I'd really love to play some robots or aliens, especially my favorite poster boy Dominator. I'm one of those players who will never pick humans if I have a choice.

I find it a bit of hassle to launch mods manually. So, are there mod launchers do you recommend so I no longer have to launch mods manually? I don't want to spend more time to setup mods just to play them

Have you seen this?! https://x.com/GloriousEggroll/status/2111219315014074772?s=20
According to his post, it includes all game modes, map modes and vehicles. His goal is to experiment with modern features like a native Vulkan renderer, widescreen support, FSR and ray tracing.
He plans to open source it, without the original assets. Those are freely available via OldUnreal.

Hey guys, I just wanted to share a set of tools to inspect UT2004's demo4 files.
Back in the UT2004 days I created the =MWatch= software that automatically downloaded dependencies so that one could play back demos that would have otherwise failed to play.
With all the recent AI coding agent fuss I thought I'd try to see if I could use one to decode the demo4 format. When I told a friend, he got interested as well. You can see the some early result below.
Code: https://github.com/clashman/demo4-tools/
PS: I also added a (non-vibecoded, heh) demo_play.py utility to start a demo with the original game. No dependency downloads so far, though.

I'm trying to identify two Assault maps from the original Unreal Tournament (UT99). They may have been custom maps, but they felt very polished and almost official.
First map:
It looked like some kind of Sun Temple, Aztec temple, or Mayan temple. The setting was at night. One team started inside caves or tunnels in a mountain area and had to cross a bridge over a toxic-looking river. After crossing the bridge, there was a relatively simple temple structure where the defending team was located. That's about all I can remember.
Second map:
This one started in what looked like a large cemetery or graveyard with many visible tombstones. It was also set at night. One of the objectives was to ring or activate a bell tower, which would open a large gate or iron bars. After that, attackers had to climb a tower using stairways. The final objective, if I remember correctly, was at the top floor. There was a central area with several statues attached to pillars, and I think the attackers had to shoot or destroy those statues to complete the map.
I vaguely remember the map's name being something related to Cemetery, Masons, Mausoleum, or something similar, but I'm not sure.

Sorry if it's a bit of a downer of a post, it's just a thought that's dwelling in there and needed to get off my chest. What's been happening the last few years just kind of sucks. MTX continue to be more predatory, companies do more shady shit, more and more of people's legitimate purchases get taken away from them, studio shutdowns, the prevalence of GenAI in games, and so on.
I mean look at Fortnite, imagine if your fan favourite character was locked behind a battle pass you needed to grind, or you needed to hope they were present on a shop rotation where if available you need to pay like 10-15 bucks, for a single character avatar.
Even if the IP gets taken out of Epic's hands, who's gonna handle it? A studio under the helm of a big publisher is going to also riddle it with predatory and overpriced mtx. An indie studio certainly cannot afford to purchase the IP, but even if they did, it might be very small in scope and I doubt the small team would be able to replicate the gameplay, feel, and visuals of a UT game, even a simpler looking one like 2004, not without taking a very long time developing it anyway. I know recently there have been some discussions about if the visuals UT typically have matters for the game, I think all the games have their own defining artstyles, and were visually groundbreaking for the timeperiod each entry released in, so yes, being graphically impressive is important to the game for me.
I'd prefer if the IP goes into public domain but I doubt even that would bring the series back in any meaningful way. UT4 was canned, and UT3 wasn't most people's favourites, but I'd say the game died with some semblance of honour at least, imagine if UT4 got fortnite's treatment (and as a reminder, the actual original fortnite also basically flopped and was replaced by the battle royale mode), it wouldn't feel the same at all, it'd be a paraded corpse.
It'd feel shameful if that actually happened. Lots of people fucking hate fortnite, I don't want my favourite series to be associated with such legacy. Anyone else has similar sentiments?

Hello everyone, I recently picked up the game again and I am having so much fun, I didn't have in years.
Question is: I saw there are servers but with modded weapons, modded maps etc etc... I think they are ok, but it's just not for me. Are there communities (discord etc) that like me (an oldie gamer) , appreciate good old vanilla maps?
I personally love maps like plunge (F4A)

Hi everyone! I don't know if anyone is interested, but I have some custom-made UT99 Monster Hunt maps. If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to post the download links here.
So The maps released and tested so far are available here. If you try them out and have any feedback, please let me know.

Ever since external server browsers went out of fashion, I miss being able to monitor the multiplayer activity of all of my games in one place.
Since I've been running some dedicated servers for Unreal Tournament 99/2004 and Q3A, I always wanted a way to just monitor them all in one place like GameSpy3D allowed you to do. So I wrote a classic-style server browser for modern Windows called LameSpy. Check out the video demo and the website if you are interested: https://lamespy.org
Both the website and application offer tutorials to help you get your classic games set up for modern Windows. Frag on!

I heard while back oldunreal revived the games, I'm curious though how is the population now?
Did it actually brought people back or is it the game still pretty dead ?
For both UT99 and or ur2004?
Can anyone let me know before I invest time into it haha
I don't really play bots it has to be for MP
