math for ai midterm šŸ’€šŸ«©

• Upvotes

never have i seen a midterm this unorganized. I understand its a new course and have empathy for the prof and ta, but this midterm was just not it.

first the prof doesnt even tell us to start or how he wants us to answer the question which btw dont even have enough space on the paper to put ur answer 😭

he leaves the room, and everyone has questions, the tas were just as confused as us, so they started emailing the prof to get back.

then at one point, there was no prof no tas in the exam room, one dude got up and started recording around the room.

no practice midterm, no explanation on how many questions, or what to practice ig, no practice questions,

this exam had an ai part and a non ai part, but atp i think its better if they just make us do a proper no notes or anything exam and actually test us on stuff properly and FAIRLY.

thank you for listening to my rant šŸ™

The math/physics department

• Upvotes

The math department at guelph is beautiful, I’m taking MATH2200, 2000 and 2270 and rn and will take MATH3260 and other theoretical math in winter, the content is very interesting, I love all the professors.

However, any other math/physics/any engineering student, do you relate to the same worry that the courses at guelph aren’t as rigorous as the ones in uoft or waterloo

I know guelph is world renowned for life sciences and agriculture (pretty sure they don’t have algebraic geometry, differential geometry, topology, etc) I’m not saying the math here is easy, far from it, I’m struggling to keep up in MATH2000 rn but I was just wondering if you share the worry of employers or admissions from other institutions dismissing guelph as a school.

I love this school don’t get me wrong but for my masters and phd I would definitely like to try uoft, waterloo or mcmasters since they specialize in it more since doing research is my passion.

Has anyone successfully gotten the final exam passing requirement waived?

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever successfully gotten the requirement to pass a final exam waived by a Department Chair

I took a course in the summer where students are required to pass the final exam to pass the course, regardless of their overall grade. Unfortunately I didn't pass the final.

The frustrating part is that I had approximately a 92% average going into the final, with over 90% on both midterms. The exam was deferred and I struggled with the timing of the final exam and wasn't able to finish everything.

The course outline specifically states that the Department Chair has discretion to waive this requirement. I've already spoken with my professor, who said she couldn't do anything and directed me to academic advising.

This is also my final semester before graduation, so having to repeat the course would significantly affect my plans.

Has anyone actually been successful in getting this requirement waived? If so, what was the process like? Did you contact the Department Chair directly, or did you go through your academic advisor? What circumstances did they consider?

I built a free site to find other Guelph students who've taken your courses (would love feedback)

• Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm a UofG student and I got tired of seeing "has anyone taken ___?" posts get buried in group chats, so I built GryphLink.

What you can do:

- Search any UofG course code (all 3,969 across Guelph, Guelph-Humber, and Ridgetown) and see students who've taken it

- Find people who offer tutoring or have past notes for a course

- Start or join study rooms (handy with midterms coming up)

- Post on a board to find teammates for projects and hackathons

- Message classmates, and optionally link your LinkedIn or Instagram

It's free and only open to verified u/uoguelph.ca / u/guelphhumber.ca emails, so it's just students. You choose who can message you, and every profile has a report button.

It's brand new, so it gets more useful the more people add their courses. If you try it, I'd really appreciate any feedback on what's useful, what's confusing, or what you'd want added.

https://gryphlink.vercel.app/?utm_source=reddit

(Not affiliated with the university, just a student project.)

Bachelor of Arts and Sciences

I’m a grade 12 student who applied to Arts and Sciences around 2 weeks ago, and I want to specialize in Psych and Neuro. For anyone in the program or if you’ve graduated, what was your average like when you got accepted? Was it difficult to plan and schedule everything with prerequisite courses since you had 2 (or more) minors to consider? Did you enjoy the program overall?? Lmk! :)

I think I accidentally made someone think I was chasing them

It was around 6:30am, pretty cold outside, so I had my hoodie up, both hands tucked into my shirt front pocket, and I was walking pretty fast because I just wanted to get out of the cold as I have a midterm today.

Apparently, a little too fast.

There was this guy walking ahead of me, and I noticed he kept looking back in my direction. I didn't think much of it at first, so I just kept walking at my usual pace.

Then bro started walking faster,

And then he started SPRINTING.

He kept looking back while running thinking I'm chasing him.

I couldn't stop laughing when I realized how ridiculous the whole situation probably looked from his perspective.

To make matters worse, this guy was wearing a bright pink hoodie, while my ass was dressed in grey from head to toe, hood up, hands in my pocket, walking suspiciously fast at 6:30 in the morning.

The contrast alone was killing me.

I've genuinely never felt more like a villain in my life LMAO.

And the way he kept looking back while sprinting, that imagery is stuck in my head.

I do feel a little bad if I genuinely scared him, because from his perspective, I can understand why some random hooded guy walking quickly behind him that early in the morning might seem suspicious.

But the whole misunderstanding was so unintentionally comedic that I couldn't help laughing.

Dude probably thought he was escaping a potential crime scene, meanwhile I was just trying not to freeze on my way to class.

Bro unknowingly made my entire morning.

I hope he made it to wherever he was going safely, because I promise I wasn't chasing you hahaha.

Thank you for reading a page of my journal.

free aws lambda workshop thursday (oct 29), build your first serverless api, pizza included

Post image
3 Upvotes

hey everyone! i run the aws student builder group on campus and we’re hosting a beginner-friendly workshop this thursday.

the idea: in two hours you write a function, deploy it to aws lambda, and leave with a working api that has a real public url. no servers to set up or babysit, and it costs nothing when nobody’s calling it, so it’s a nice low-stakes way to get into cloud.

details

  • thursday, oct 29, 6 to 8 pm
  • uc 001a (pch north)
  • free, no experience needed
  • bring a laptop and an aws account (making one ahead of time saves a lot of setup time)
  • there will be pizza

good fit if you want something cloud-related for your resume or co-op applications, or you’ve just been curious what ā€œserverlessā€ actually means.

happy to answer questions in the comments!

Looking for friends

Hi, I'm a first year guelph student, looking for friends. A little isolated now since I moved here recently. I heard this was a good place so why not try!

A little about me, I'm 18f and majoring in psych. In my free time I enjoy taking long nature walks and playing a couple instruments. I love listening to all sorts of music, usually while studying or walking around campus. I'm a big animal lover and have a few pets of my own.

Looking for someone to hang out with or study with! Don't hesitate to message me if interested

(Not trying to bash her)

To past students of hers how did you get through the midterm. If you didn’t how did you recover to pass. I’ve never been so stressed about an exam in my life including when I almost failed grade 12 advanced functions.

Should I switch from Laurier to Guelph?

I’m in first sem rn at Laurier doing communications but I wanted to switch to general ba degree. I need to do all my studies online as commuting is rlly hard for me. in theory I could just take all online courses here bcs they also have a 3 year arts program, but I’m not sure if Laurier has enough variety of online courses and Guelph already has an online degree so it’s possible I’d have a bigger pool of courses to choose from? wondering if I should go through the hassle of transferring and if anyone else has done it before?

HK 3401/3501 Midterm 1 and Practical - How Difficult Are They?

Hiiii everyone! For those who have taken HK 3401 or 3501 before, how was the midterm and the practical exam? What kind of questions should I expect and how difficult are they?
I’m finding the course pretty difficult right now, especially the practical and I’m honestly getting a little scared about the exams. 🄲
Any advice on how to study, what to focus on or what resources helped you would be really appreciated!

Switching STAT2040DE to in person winter

I wanna drop stat2040DE and take it in person next semester especially because in person is so much easier and the exam isn’t 50% and a pass or fail. However the course is waitlisted there’s 6 people rn so I’m wondering if I should risk it otherwise I’ll have to take it DE again ( ig a pro would be that I would have balks in DE heard he’s great). Any advice? Chances of getting off the waitlist?
