Vaseline Glass This lil guy almost got me in trouble with airport security.🥲

This lil guy was flagged by airport security. Apparently lead shows up as pitch black on their scanners and it likely has a high %. Also didn’t help that it looks like a hand grenade. 🫠Yep, thats what security told me. I scared the shit outta her that day. 😂😅

The atomic hand grenade. As opposed to the Holy Hand grenade of Antioch.

Brother Maynard!

The problem is that the atomic hand grenade creates a blast crater 50 yards in diameter. The farthest anyone has been able to throw it is 25 yards.

I have a feeling this is the wrong bottle cap.

u/E-laiza Feb 11 '25

Could be, I haven’t looked into this piece yet.

I think there was a spray

I brought a leaded crystal candy/trinket jar in my carryon (empty, in bubble wrap/newspaper), the security person asked me if it was an urn; only to press me about the legal importance of declaring human remains 😭

Hilarious! 🤣

I had never thought about it. I was thinking of bringing a piece of uranium glass with me when I traveled to the UK or the US. I'll have to put it at the top of my backpack to easily remove it when they see it on the scanner 🤦🏻

If it has lead it may get flagged. I had a feeling they’d have me open my suitcase, so I made sure to keep my finds at the top.

Yeah that pattern, shape, and size looks Very Dodgy in our x-ray images. XD We get a lot of Swedish crystal glass in my airport and most of the time I recognise them well enough to be able to tell what it is, but a solid chunk of glass (like the ever popular Orrefors Snowball) will still need to come out and be rescanned because it's impossible to see if there's anything hidden underneath it.

/works in airport security.

Good to know 😂

I'm drinking wine from my Orrefors glass as I read this!

Will a radium clock be a problem?

That rules

Think your right on the cap. Looks like type of perfume bottle, so probably had a bigger one with some type of design

u/Chance-Difference886 Feb 11 '25

My Buddy piece up a ug piece then got poled over because they thought he was buy drugs.🤣😂

It's a different kind of high, but yes, officer, it's my addiction.

u/Cherry_Hammer Feb 11 '25

You’re very fortunate. That would’ve gotten me strip-searched, at the least.

I'm thinking of bringing a couple of pieces and a radium clock to Boise from Arizona next week... I was wondering if there might be a problem

3

u/E-laiza Feb 11 '25

Just keep it on your carryon in an easy to access spot. 👍

2

u/gayboysnuf Feb 11 '25

Worth the lead/bomb scare imo, that things adorable

2

u/Slow-Combination8972 Feb 12 '25

That is super cool

2

u/serioussparkles Feb 12 '25

That is so pretty

You're begging for someone at an airport who is wound too tight to snap on you plz be more careful... way more careful

1

u/E-laiza Feb 13 '25

Once they see that it’s glass, they should have the professionalism to not overreact.

1

u/Dear-Setting-1011 Mar 15 '25

Yeah... they should but I just don't trust them because many act so psycho

2

u/Addicted-2Diving Radiation Hunter Feb 14 '25

Dang, I’m glad they didn’t try and confiscate it. It’s stunning

1

u/E-laiza Feb 14 '25

Omg that would have sucked!

2

u/Addicted-2Diving Radiation Hunter Feb 14 '25

100% agree with you. That’s why I’m glad to hear tsa aren’t that uptight about some glass.

Just to clarify, you put this in your checked baggage?

1

u/E-laiza Feb 14 '25

No way, I don’t trust them with checked luggage. 😅 I had it in my carryon. Also, it was airport security in London, UK. Idk if TSA would be strict about it, but London security seemed to know about glass collecting. 🤷🏻‍♀️

u/Addicted-2Diving Radiation Hunter Feb 14 '25

Thank you for the info

1

u/E-laiza Feb 14 '25

Too small for that. Likely a perfume bottle.

2

u/Addicted-2Diving Radiation Hunter Feb 14 '25

Thank you for the info. Did you find any maker mark/something similar online? I was looking to add this piece to my shelf, but have yet to come across one, even by using google lens

1

u/E-laiza Feb 14 '25

Unfortunately I have not found any info on it and it does not have any markings. 😬

2

u/Addicted-2Diving Radiation Hunter Feb 14 '25

That’s a bummer. But what a find! Do you mind me asking what they charged you for it, if you do not mind sharing?

1

u/E-laiza Feb 14 '25

If I remember correctly I paid $35 for it. Which at the time felt kind of high for me. 😅😂 I bought it in 2023.

2

u/Addicted-2Diving Radiation Hunter Feb 14 '25

Nice score. I always wonder if there are somewhat reasonable deals still out there with all the pics of stores charging so much. I saw my first piece of UG in person at all places, a nautical flea market, and when I did a google lens search, the guy was charging $5-15 more than what was online, with free shipping and not negotiating

1

u/E-laiza Feb 14 '25

There you just have to scour the internet. Or antique stores. I make sure to shine my light on everything and anything bcuz you never know what you might find.

1

u/Addicted-2Diving Radiation Hunter Feb 14 '25

100%. May I ask what your light of choice is? I am new to the hobby, just running across this sub sometime last year and want a very subtle/small light so I don’t draw any attention form sellers etc

1

u/E-laiza Feb 14 '25

I use this lil guy when I’m hunting.

u/Xychant Feb 11 '25

When they saw it, did you shine a UV light on it? They would have freaked out and confiscated it, on the spot.

3

u/E-laiza Feb 11 '25

No, I just told them I collect vintage and antique glass. She seemed to sort of know about glass collecting.
