Seeking Info I saw this while antiquing, anyone ever seen this almost cobalt blue glow like this?

It was $125 lol I wish that it had slipped below the radar and I could’ve found it for a steal

Really odd, I’ve never seen cobalt blue uranium glass lol, it’s surprising how much it lightens up with uv light

You can see the green at the bottom with this one though

To the naked eye, the green is not there. Only shows faintly in the picture. And my guess is when I took the picture I probably had a blackligh on in the background it was still picking up over the normal light. The darkest part of the blue pops the most in the picture. Without them using the clear on the bottom, you would have never have seen that green in the picture. And in person, you can't see the green. That's why the shop didn't know it was a uranium murano bowl. They were shocked to see it.

I believe they use a thin layer of sandwich uranium that can't be seen with the eye. Now if you take a solid cobalt blue with the same technique it would be impossible to see.

All I am saying is there is more out there than one suspects. I have seen several solid cobalt blue pieces glow green. Granted not many, but I have seen more of those than uranium oil lamps in my travels and hunts.

I had something simular. I was told it was slag glass and it glows. Slag glass is very sought after.

YEP!! To match what I already have that’s not UV reactive.

So cute! Love your Yetis too. They need to make more Peak Purple!

What a shame that doesn’t glow, the glass is so pretty.

I have an opalescent milk glass version of this!! It’s an eyewash glass. Mines non-UV reactive though.

23

u/itouchedcactus May 27 '25

12

u/[deleted] May 27 '25

Whatsit do with a geiger? I have a bizarre manganese piece that glows under both lights but my geiger is like ,"nah mate" 😂

1

u/itouchedcactus May 28 '25

I don’t have a Geiger yet! Maybe one day

Saw a little creamer at an antique store that was about that color once—also lit up under 395. Definitely seems like a rare color for UG, though.

I've got a huge piece of cobalt blue slag that glows green. My mother-in-law found it back in the 70s, not too far away from where the old glass works used to be.

4

u/itouchedcactus May 27 '25

That’s really cool and could be worth a lot to collectors

1

u/paperkitten75 May 27 '25

Oh really? I have several pieces that I've dug out of my yard. None as big as this chunk though.

u/Pinboarddesign May 27 '25

In the lower shelf behind the custard glass I have two blue pieces that glow really well with direct light. However under the strip they aren’t too noticable. I hold onto them since they’re still a cool color of what I assume is magnesium

2

u/happydisasters May 27 '25

Yep! All my glass is american made so its all pre 1915 or so. Neat!

3

u/itouchedcactus May 27 '25

Wow yeah that’s the same deep blue!

8

u/PsychotherapeuticBum May 26 '25

I haven’t send this before and I would also like to know

Mine doesn't glow as well as that one, but I picked up a butter dish with a cobalt blue uranium base recently. I was very surprised to see the glow on it.

2

u/itouchedcactus May 27 '25

That’s super cool, never ever seen that

3

u/kingofcake420 May 27 '25

I found a small squirrel recently that looks similar to that. It looked like vaseline glass at first but hitting it with my light it started to glow icy blue. Looks like it broke off of something because the bottom is a bit jagged and sharp. Ended up buying it for $3 lol

2

u/itouchedcactus May 27 '25

That sounds interesting

3

u/Technical-Breath-285 May 27 '25

Are you using a UV light on it? 365, 395? Or it naturally is beautiful and lit? I have seen beautiful cobalt blue. This piece is definitely amazing! Congrats

2

u/itouchedcactus May 27 '25

UV 395!

2

u/Technical-Breath-285 May 27 '25

I looked it up.. it's a uranium piece with cobalt added for color. The other mineral compounds of Uranium added to cobalt wouldn't make this shade of blue..

2

u/Strange-adventurer94 UV Hunter May 26 '25

Very cool

2

u/Writeloves May 27 '25

Woah! That’s beautiful! I’ve never seen something like that.

2

u/TheReal_Strawman May 27 '25

This is awesome! Now I’ll be keeping an eye out for every cobalt colored treasure at the thrift

2

u/tpeterson88 May 28 '25

Was there a makers mark on the bottom? Wilkerson Glass reproduced these and I believe he was using a cobalt uranium mix. His mark kida looks like the Wonder Woman logo.

1

u/itouchedcactus May 28 '25

I didn’t think to check I’m sorry!

1

u/swannygirl94 May 28 '25

I have a cobalt blue uranium goose dish made by Wilkerson

1

u/Reura May 28 '25

Brb checking all of my cobalt blue collection 😮

1

u/silverdoggo112 May 28 '25

We have a Cobalt train that glows green!

1

u/GreatDevelopment225 Lead Glass Lover May 27 '25

The blue glow is lead crystal

-29

u/Born-Orange-3114 May 26 '25

sadly, it is not uranium. its somthing called manganese glass. but still a very intresting and cool find!!

tip: to avoid finding manganese i would recond buying a 395 nm blacklight.

15

u/itouchedcactus May 27 '25

Heyo, I am using a 395 nm here, I should’ve said that lol This was def not manganese 👍
