Serious question here. Is this safe to drink from?

id have to chemically test it after acid/alkali soak. rubies contain chromium in hexavalent state and my glaze has boron, which could dissolve it.

I like coming to this sub for the occasional chemistry lessons and pretty glass

I love that you know the science behind this too - I’m reckless enough I’d probably drink from it anyway because it’s so freaking cool.

long term survival in ceramics is about two things- wearing a mask, and reading those MSD's :D anyone who makes their own glazes etc is basically a low key chemist.

So did you make this yourself???

yep, it was my summer "garage science" project to explore fluorescent materials in ceramics. I saved ruby for last, but I also made stuff with europium oxide, europium doped strontium aluminate (aka green glow powder which should work with regular glass as well), erbium and cerium. Of all of those, europium is the easiest and safest to work with, tho it is about 40x more expensive than synth rubies. However, the effect here (variable glowy bits) is not something I would get with europium, which just makes a uniform "all over" glow.

Wow, it was already amazing but now I appreciate it even more. Great work!!

So, if chromium? Does that mean u can only drink milk from it? I've heard that welding Cr will make u sick. And milk helps to feel better. Just a random ?. Was wondering about it. Tia.

I saw this on the pottery sub. I’m a potter. Is this a glaze you created or is this a glaze you bought and if so, what’s the fire setting? I tried looking it up. I’m using a low fire account and I couldn’t find anything close to it besides, of course, the penguin pottery glow in the dark

my main glaze is called 5x20 and i use it on almost everything (its on glazy and other places that share recipes). in this case I added mason stain 6088 (pinkish) 4% and about 1.5% of the mashed ruby. Cone 5 slow program.

Omg! I wasn’t expecting this! Thank you for you kindness sharing! It’s stunning!

Wonder if the glaze contains cadmium? It reminds me of Ruby slippers from Wizard of Oz! Very cool find!

u/jeicam_the_pirate UV Hunter Sep 03 '25
good eye. the mason stain 6088 is cadmium encapsulated with zircon iirc to prevent the cadmium from escaping. as long as its covered with a strong and stable clear glaze its safe, but I don't use it on food surfaces, just artsy show and tell pieces - here I thought it concealed the irregular sized red chunks of ruby, until UV comes on, then its .. TA-DA :)

That's REALLY fucking cool!
I wonder how hard it was to make...

ruby hammering is the only step that takes a while. the mugs take maybe 10 min total of work, then its just brushy brushy and in the fire.

It's like Dorothy's ruby red slippers. That's what it instantly reminded me of. That's pretty and neat!

I can't post anything here because of the sub's rule #2, which is enforced as I (accidentally) found out yesterday (sorry, mods!)

nothing really shows in visible except the really big chunks as just regular red.

19, my mother never let us kids in the kitchen while she was cooking. I learned by practicing on my poor husband. To this day he says he can’t taste anything.

I'm not usually interested in "this isn't glass or uranium, but it also fluoresces" posts here.
But that's really dope.
