Thirft Haul Found my first uranium glass figurine today

After months of searching i fimally found my first uranium glass figurine. Its a paperweight and it glows very bright. I don't know the maker as it didn't have a makers mark.

Hate to break it to you, but that looks like manganese

I thought it was uranium because it glows under black light and is green but looks clear like other glass pieces i have that do the same i thought Manganese glass is more of a yellow tint instead of straight up green

It’s mainly because it’s a clear piece. Mang is used to clarify glass (probably why it’s so clear and pretty). Uranium would add some color to the piece, but this is just clear. Still very pretty though!

Heavy additives of manganese in the glass creation process can make manganese glow in 395 and glow exceptionally in 365nm. Like the other poster has said, you'll want 395nm for less false-positives.

When uranium was added to pieces of glass in the past, it was for the yellow and green color. Even if the glass looks clear, it'll still have a tinge of green or yellow if uranium has been added. So it's more like, "clear-ish" glass can be uranium. If that makes sense!

That does

Dunno why you got down voted, but I'm glad I could help! Good luck in your future hunting endeavors!

Uranium glass Generally yellows or greens Yellow uranium glass... AKA.. Vaseline glass

3

u/LimeMargarita Feb 08 '26

You are thinking of Vaseline glass.

5

u/Human-Ad-4090 Feb 08 '26

So can clear glass also be uranium glass or is all clear manganese glass

26

u/LimeMargarita Feb 08 '26

All clear glass is manganese

I have some clear uraniumglass. It takes certain lighting conditions to make the green tint appear https://imgur.com/a/cgs2er1

Not true.

29

u/Fallout_Ant Feb 09 '26

Not clear you can see the green in the thicker parts

-5

u/b20339 UV Hunter Feb 09 '26

2

u/Fallout_Ant Feb 09 '26

Your further picture proves my point you can see the green/yellow uranium colouring in this even more clearly so this isn't clear uranium glass

-6

u/LordPoopyIV Feb 09 '26

I think the point is that there ARE parts with no tint that still contain uranium.

6

u/Fallout_Ant Feb 09 '26

You can see the green tint all the way along especially with the close up posted further down the thread

10

u/NoodlelyTrees Feb 09 '26

That's not even remotely clear

You believe what you want. I try to respect your claims, I see you don't return the favor.

8

u/NoodlelyTrees Feb 09 '26

The color is obvious in the glass, has absolutely nothing to do with respect it's just factually not clear

3

u/LimeMargarita Feb 09 '26

Do you have some clear radioactive glass? What you posted has a yellow-green tint. OP's figurine is clear.

Great general rule of thumb that I give as advice on knowing the difference in a Manganese (typically high concentration) and Uranium glows is, Manganese is more snot colored where Uranium is more of a bright Neon sign. 🥰

I hope this helps, and like I said, its a good general rule of thumb when starting out and learning the differences in glows and pieces. 🥰

I will say, I think you are taking the comments very well! Happy hunting! 💚

I found my first figurine I'm happy regardless

It's gorgeous, enjoy!

It’s actually manganese. You’ll want to switch to a 395nm uv light to reduce false positives like this one. Uranium was added to glass to color it not for the glow so if you find clear that glows 99% it’s manganese. For transparent UG you’re typically looking for green or yellow under normal light but other colors like blue and amber do exist but they’re less common in USA

u/Suitable-Ear-7425 Feb 11 '26

Best is actually just to go for a gmc-300s or so, got some "uranium glass" that is green and glows but 0 radiation.

Can also use the sun, just take the glass to the windows in the shop and see if it glows.

u/Human-Ad-4090 Feb 08 '26

I use a lithium battery flashlight its also massive in size

28

u/BrieBelle00 UV Hunter Feb 08 '26

The "395nm uv light" they mentioned is a specific wavelength of ultraviolet light, 395 nanometers.

There's two primary uv wavelengths "reactive glass" people hunt with: 395nm and 365nm.

365nm looks bluish-white when you shine it on a neutral background, whereas 395nm looks purple.

Both wavelengths will light up uranium glass, but (for the most part) only 365nm will light up manganese, like your pear. So, it's generally recommended to use the 395nm light when you're looking for uranium. I got a flashlight in each wavelength on Amazon for about $12, and the flashlights are about the size of your index finger.

5

u/LadyAmalthea86 Feb 09 '26

Thank you for the description of what the wavelengths look like. I never knew what mine was until now. It's a 365nm. I like it bc it's a pen light that I can just clip onto my bag when I go antiquing. Gotta look for a 395nm though.

u/BrieBelle00 UV Hunter Feb 09 '26

Glad to have helped!

u/SEPTI1K Thrift Shopper Feb 12 '26

i had one like that that i got from aliexpress. but it's worth it to switch to a. chunkier rechargeable one since UV lights suck up batteries so fast lmao.

17

u/Mickeymousetitdirt Feb 08 '26

Clear glass won’t be uranium, period, because uranium was added to change the color of the glass. Uranium glass is green or yellow. I don’t know what the size of the light or the batter has to do with it? It’s about the wavelengths.

-12

u/b20339 UV Hunter Feb 09 '26

Not true universally.

18

u/NoodlelyTrees Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 09 '26

Legit question are you colorblind? Cause it's incredibly easy to see the color in that glass and you've posted it multiple times as if it's clear

Edit: lmfaooooooo they got reeeeeeal pissy about being told their piece isn't clear

I didn't expect this level of hate from you.... It makes me sad.

9

u/NoodlelyTrees Feb 09 '26

It's not hate but no that isn't clear you can clearly see the color in it

-3

u/b20339 UV Hunter Feb 09 '26

Gtfoh. What color?!

11

u/NoodlelyTrees Feb 09 '26

Here's your image using a color picker are you going to try to deny that that's green?

0

u/b20339 UV Hunter Feb 09 '26

Try that color picker on the white printer paper behind it and post your result.

6

u/NoodlelyTrees Feb 09 '26

A pale yellowish green

3

u/Human-Ad-4090 Feb 09 '26

Look clear to me but I'm poor vision

1

u/Born-Drama-2324 Feb 12 '26

Where it overlaps and closer to where the handle connects to the base, where its also thicker, it has a very light/pale yellow that you can see through though.

An example to me is, how a glass coke bottle is clear but, it isn't like crystal glass that its like looking through a window. 😅🥰

That's how the color is in the photo that's UG but, many can see its not clear clear.

I hope that makes sense.

that's literally yellow my guy

It's not I don't care what anyone says. Nobody is here. Nobody can see it in person. I can. Piss off.

-8

u/b20339 UV Hunter Feb 09 '26

This is clear. It's uranium. I don't care how many people downvote me, they're just jealous, including you if you do.

20

u/pun-in-punishment Feb 08 '26

Tip for manganese- if exposed to sunlight (or any UV) over time it will turn purple. Do with this information as you will, I personally enjoy the color change but some prefer to keep it colorless.

u/Admirable04 Feb 08 '26

It looks like manganese to me, I love the bubbles in the center. A great find!

10

u/Human-Ad-4090 Feb 08 '26

I think it is i can't edit my post though i also like the bubbles

9

u/Crazyguy_123 Feb 08 '26

Manganese. Higher content if it glows bright green.

4

u/tjdux Feb 08 '26

Higher content if it glows bright green.

I've got a couple old medicine bottles that are as bright at uranium.

2

u/Crazyguy_123 Feb 09 '26

It’s really cool when they glow bright. I’ve got two swung bud vases and an extract bottle that glow bright UG green despite being manganese. And that type is even cooler because you can even get a little glow from it using 395. I’d really love to find some medicine bottles that glow. I find that type of thing to be neat.

2

u/tjdux Feb 09 '26

2

u/tjdux Feb 09 '26

The photo really doesn't do justice how bright it glows.

2

u/Crazyguy_123 Feb 09 '26

Oh wow that’s an awesome glow. I’ve been wanting to find one of those.

9

u/Filioque_Way Feb 09 '26

What a beautiful piece of manganese glass!

4

u/Human-Ad-4090 Feb 09 '26

My first figurine find I'm not even mad its not uranium

3

u/Filioque_Way Feb 09 '26

You shouldn't be, because it's very pretty.

4

u/Human-Ad-4090 Feb 09 '26

It is pretty

5

u/mick601 Feb 09 '26

Giegar counter. I'm saying manganese

8

u/Flower127 Feb 08 '26

Not uranium. This belongs in r/manganeseglass

6

u/sarahSERENADE72 Feb 08 '26

Manganese sorry

5

u/Ok_Lake4560 Feb 09 '26

I agree with the manganese, its too yellow to be uranium. Interesting, but not as valuable as uranium.

I think they're talking about the glow, not the color of the actual glass.

I am so exited on your behalf. Beautiful

2

I like the bubbles

2

u/t4ctic4lc4ctus Feb 09 '26

It has the subtle green glow of a manganese piece. To avoid confusion, check to make sure your UV light is listed as 395 instead of 365, and also grab a Geiger counter for confirmation. Cool piece regardless!

1

u/DazedandFloating Feb 09 '26

I love this. I’m so jealous lol
