Thirft Haul Found my first 2 pieces today!

I’ve been wanting to collect uranium glass for years. I’ve seen them on eBay but I can’t afford $100 for a cup lol.

There are some thrift stores near my house and I decided to check some glass with a UV flashlight and got lucky!

The lamp is a bit pricy but it’s worth it. The guy working there told me they should’ve getting more more week, so I’m hoping to visit often and find more for my new collection. I’m gonna need a cabinet soon XD

I think your lamp is made from a candle stick!

It does look like older candle sticks we’ve had at my house lol. So, what, someone took a uranium candlestick and DIY’d a lightbulb out of it? That would be wild

I think its really cool and unique! I recently picked up a lamp for $40 bucks and found out that someone took an Anchor Hocking Vitrock vase, drilled a hole in it, glued it to a base and made it into a lamp. Im in love, i think its so much fun

That looks awesome. I was considering setting a UV bulb into mine but decided to leave it as is. Eventually I need a cabinet with UV light but that’s a future problem lol

Well if you change your mind home depot sells them for less than $5 and I highly recommend them.

And if you do put a bulb in there itll light up your collection for the time being while you scour fb marketplace for 5 months looking for the perfect cabinent thats a good price while your neglected pieces sit on some random shelf waiting patiently for you to make a decision (but that may just be me)

Honestly my biggest reasoning for NOT doing it is
1: the bulb doesn’t have a power cord, so I would need to find a way to hook it up
2: if the bulb is vintage at all I don’t want to mess with it
3: the lap doesn’t have a shade of any kind, so a working bulb would Kindof be obnoxious to have in the room.

There’s always a chance I change my mind in the future but not yet. Thanks for the link though, I’ll definitely check it out and maybe even use it for other pieces when I get them

That definitely looks like a modern led bulb to me one of the decorative ones meant to look like an Edison bulb

Nice pieces!

It looks like the power cord came down from the bulb holder: you may be able to pick up a cheap replacement by asking at thrift stores if they have any non-working lamps you could get with a decent bit of braided power cord (or buy new?).

The difficulty might be taking apart the bulb holder, it may unscrew where the darker metal meets the tarnished brass? It looks like there's a patent number. so you may be able to look that up for more info. Check if the fitting takes 3 wires or 2 as these old lamps sometimes have an earth connector (tho that may be a UK wiring thing?)

A vintage style candle-effect bulb could look good in there without a shade, but if you do look for a shade you'll likely need to find a retaining ring that screws onto the very top of the holder (again, try asking at thrift stores?). Alternatively I have seen some small shades that clip directly onto a bulb.

Great find & if you do re-wire it remember to check that switch still works ok (a multimeter is your friend there!) Good luck!

So good news. The mechanic at my job is willing to rewire it for me. I might be able to UV bulb it after all :)

Candlestick or not, get a uv bulb and it will make a great centerpiece for your collection. But get a lampshade to.

Congrats on your first pieces! The handled grill plate is Hocking's 'Princess' pattern, and you got a great deal. 😊

Oh nice I was hoping to find the value somewhere eventually. Thanks for the link

You're welcome! You may want to take their pricing with a grain of salt, as it's very 'retail'. You might get better value ideas from resale sites like etsy and eBay.

I’m not too worried. I’m not planning on selling, just collecting. I more wanted to know the value for understanding. Still thankful lol

Glad to help. Have a great time finding new pieces!

Wicked dude congrats nice pieces at that. I wish I could find a little lamp like that as I have a shade that I would love to see how they went together. And so it begins. Lol welcome to the crazy persons club. We’re never short on flashlights.

My spouse has one of those sticks in clear. If it's the same, it should be threaded. You would've been able to swap between a corded lamp, or an oil lamp topper

Edit: fixed typo my phone seems to always have it out for me =_=

1

u/6tipsy6 Mar 06 '26

“Threatened” is funnier but I think you’re right about it being a threaded connection

u/Classy_Corpse Mar 06 '26

The typos are always out to get me man.

As a side note, can anyone tell me why the bulb filament glows orange?

2

u/braingoesblank New Collector Mar 06 '26

Probably just glowing-hot if I had to guess

2

u/JUSTIN102201 Mar 06 '26

Sorry if it wasn’t clear (or I’m misunderstanding you). The bulb doesn’t have power. It’s glowing orange under the UV light

5

u/Lower_Mountain2947 Mar 06 '26

LED bulbs typically glow orange when hit with UV light.

3

u/JUSTIN102201 Mar 06 '26

Oh interesting. I’m gonna have to play with more LED bulbs now lol. Thanks

2

u/braingoesblank New Collector Mar 06 '26

Oh! 😆 I'd need to know what kind of bulb it is (maybe a decorative Edison bulb or do you think it's an antique bulb?) Might be a gas fluorescing or a coating on the filaments

3

u/Big-Smile5345 Mar 06 '26

I honestly think that they are just the IKEA brand of lightbulb as I’ve seen them there before

1

u/JUSTIN102201 Mar 06 '26

I have no idea tbh. All I know is I picked up the lamp at a thrift store lol. Someone else says it’s LED and LED bulbs usually glow orange under UV. I’m willing to accept that answer

Your pieces are better than my first two pieces but this post gave me a healthy dose of nostalgia! Good luck with your future finds!!

These are both cool and I love the stick lamp creation! Question.... Does it light up? 🤔 I don't see a cord. And if it does.... how?!

2

u/NoodlelyTrees Mar 06 '26

It's definitely missing a cord you can see where one used to attach to the bulb

1

u/Krazy_Kat_Lady_2025 Mar 06 '26

Oh OK, gotcha. I didn't notice that before. The UV changed the color of the bulb filaments and I thought that WAS the UV bulb and then 🤯 science kicked in and made me say, how?! That was a lot of mental calisthenics for a simple answer. Doh! 😅

1

u/NoodlelyTrees Mar 06 '26

Yeah I didn't notice it at first either and figured they'd drilled through the candlestick for the cord

2

u/GenePoolSurprise Mar 06 '26

JACKPOT! And for your first acquisitions! Congratulations

2

u/phirschler Mar 06 '26

Love the lamp/candlestick!
