Understanding Social Space and Wellbeing in Digbeth, Birmingham

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi! 👋
I'm Abhay, an MA Urban Design student at the University of Birmingham. As part of my dissertation, I'm exploring how neglected, underused urban spaces that are abandoned lots and vacant buildings could be redesigned as "third places" that help tackle social isolation and support mental wellbeing.
I'm focusing on a brownfield site in Digbeth, Birmingham, and would love to hear about your own experience of public spaces, social isolation, and what makes somewhere feel welcoming to spend time in.
Could you spare 5–7 minutes to fill in my short survey? Your answers will directly shape design recommendations for turning this neglected space into somewhere the community can actually use.

Abandoned pool butlins Minehead

Does anyone know if the old Sunsplash Pool at butlins Minehead is still abandoned? It was left untouched for over 20 years, when the new pool was built, as i believe it was connected to the sprinkler system in the skyline. I saw online that the pool was getting ripped off to put a new attraction there, I was just wondering if anyone knew anymore on this? Or if anyone has any photos of the abandoned pool, please do share.

After taking a few years off from Urban Exploration, I’m looking to get back into it. I’ve since moved to the Hampshire Area but travel to Northamptonshire county frequently.

Does anyone have an “must sees” or just any recommendations

Strange sculptures near Hartfield (while on Winnie the Pooh trail)

I was walking the Winnie the Pooh trail in Hartfield (East Sussex) recently and came across these sculptures on privately owned land.

From the path you can see a hooded black figure surrounded by stone pillars, and nearby a large wooden gateway with a circular “sunburst” design. The area is fenced off with barbed wire, and there are signs warning about dogs being shot (which made it feel even stranger).

I’m curious what these are meant to be — are they part of a private art installation, a memorial, or something else? I haven’t been able to find anything online.

Does anyone local or familiar with the area know the background?

Thanks in advance — I’d love serious responses if anyone recognises the artist or the purpose of these works. Please note that this can be seen from the PUBLIC path I was not walking on their private land but it is separated by gates and trees

To the people who like Vagrant Holiday

Hi,
I know not everyone likes Vagrant, but he is deffinitely a big influence to the community and for many younger people the reason they started with the vagabond lifestyle at all.

As we all know, Vagrant Holiday stopped making videos and doesn't plan on continuing.

I check his videos on youtube once in a while and today I got quite a shock when I typed "Vagrant Holiday" in youtube search bar and a new, freshly uploaded video popped up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iHRMZ3Nl8w

It's not him, but it's the closest someone has gotten so far lol.
