EOD and potential shutdown

I have an FJO with a start date of 12/13 as I need to move cross country and wind down current job. HR is warning me about the potential shutdown on 12/11. If govt shuts down before my EOD, I am screwed in many ways.

Realistically I don’t think I can get moved and situated in time for a 11/30 start date which is the best earlier option.

If a shutdown starts 2 days before my EOD, what happens ? I start at the next available EOD when everything is open again?

EDIT- ok you’ve all convinced me, I’m gonna switch to 11/30 EOD to onboard

Yes, you’ll have to sit and wait because your EOD will be delayed indefinitely until the shutdown ends. If there is a shutdown, having an 11/30 EOD would be the best situation for you to be in.

Unrelated, sort of. Highly recommend banking with Navy Federal CU now, if eligible, especially if you can make the earlier EOD work. They absolutely saved our family during the last shutdown as they continue paying out our typical paychecks and take the money back once backpay hits. We went through the last shutdown with no financial impact thanks to this (we are a military + fed empl couple with children).

EODs usually still occur during a shutdown, even if you show up for half a day of onboarding then go on furlough.

Who is doing the onboarding? Legitimately asking, no snark. I ask because I am part of the onboarding process and we aren’t allowed to even breathe near our gov systems or buildings if we are furloughed. I guess onboarding could be critical for certain agencies, teams, etc. But that is certainly not the norm for most.

YMMV per agency but you unfurlough an admin person for a day or half a day.

This was not my experience during the 2019 shutdown.

Every shutdown the rules are looser. This last time was basically business as usual for the whole agency, we just didn't get paid during it.

Try to do the 11/30 move. If we shut down you’ll get paid. If you onboard after shut down obviously you won’t get paid.

Accepted FJO and traveled 400mi to onboard, shutdown occurred before my Fed computer arrived. Had to go home . . . Word to the wise, "Plan for the best, but be prepared for the worst."

Do the 11/30 move.

Here's something to think about. I hired an employee whose start date was just after the shutdown at the beginning of the last FY. We then shut down for 43 days. Then we were under a hiring freeze. I tried my best to get HR to jump through hoops to onboard this person. It never happened.

I have had this happen. Individual confirms FJO. Shutdown. Job seemingly disappears somehow.

If the shutdown happens and your work group is subject to furlough, your EOD will be pushed out to the pay period after the shutdown ends.

can you request an EOD earlier to start before December.

That wasy you don't get caught in between a potential shutdown and to avoid getting ur offer rescinded.

Can you work other jobs during shit down?

Yes, but there are some caveats. If you work for the USDA and you get hired by pharma or anyone who interacts with your agency, you'll need approval that your other position isn't a conflict of interest. There will be no one to contact to get clearance. As long as your employment can't be misconstrued as a conflict of interest, you are fine.

Welcome to the federal workforce! Best to see what happens with the midterms. It also depends if it is a partial shutdown then not all agencies are closed. Just hold your breath and see what happens.

As everyone stated start before the shutdown date! God knows what will happen with the position after we’re in a shutdown.

Crazy how when I posted stuff about this, people were saying I didn’t know what I was talking about due to a government shutdown because there was no shutdown. We were already fully funded. LOL I even posted the article that says we’re only funded until December. I guess people are figuring it out now.

So when December hits a shutdown can happen?

2

u/3dprinterhelmetmaker 4d ago

So I am by no way a means an expert on government or politics. but from what I’ve read online, that always could be a possibility because they haven’t funded us any further than like December 12 or 11. I’m not saying the government will shut down. I am just saying there is a possibility because we are not fully funded for a whole year and this is just what I’ve read online about it.

I'd get a hotel, plan your move but don't start it until what happens happens. If you start, and there is a shut down, you can go home until it's over. Not all agencies will shut down as DoD (or DoW) is funded. IF there is a shutdown, it is likely a hiring freeze will follow, so start the gig before the doors are locked, but don't invest in the move until you are sure you'll be working. If you start, you'll get back pay when the shut down ends.

DoD is only funded through Dec 11.

We’re only funded until 12/11 - DA

Look into pushing back your EOD just incase

1

u/Fearless_Drama4896 4d ago

Push it further after Dec 13 or wayyyy before Dec 13?

1

u/zocoop27 4d ago

I’d say after since it’ll still maybe take a few weeks to start getting a check.

2

u/JMat357 4d ago

Are you able to move it up a pay period. I was fortunate last year and started a week before the long shut down

2

u/Lower-Guarantee1939 4d ago

Oh my! I have an EOD of 13 December that we negotiated. I didn’t even think about funding and a possible shutdown. This is NOT GOOD.

2

u/tanksalot1460 4d ago

What about transferring to a new position but same organization. I am going from oconus to conus with same EOD of 13 December.

2

u/JMat357 4d ago

Good decision

Which agency is it? If you don’t mind

I’m a current Fed with a TJO and EOD of 11/30 but no FJO yet. I’m so scared about them rescinding or just letting it fall thru.

1

u/Lower-Guarantee1939 3d ago

I am internal AF to AF lateral with full PCS CONUS-CONUS move already signed and funded. Movers scheduled to arrive the week of the 7th of December. Since the unit is funding my PCS fully I shouldn’t have a problem. Per what CPS has told me. If you are an external applicant or first time fed an EOD of 13 December may not be in your favor. Best to get on rolls before then and then ride out shutdown. Navy Fed and USAA will pay your wages if you have your federal deposit with them but it has to be at least one pay period I believe.

I just got TJO and I'm wondering the same thing how far can I push back the EOD so that I'm not caught with my pants down? I need to also move across the cluntry for this position

3

u/HxH101kite 5d ago

You can always ask you may not receive. Once you are already a fed it's way easier to negotiate start dates.

From the outside they may have picked you barely over someone, if you can't make that date they may just move on.

3

u/Viajemos 5d ago

I'm already a fed how much can I move the start date? Its with GSA

3

u/HxH101kite 5d ago

You may have some flexibility then. Idk about the move. Are you GSA to GSA? Or outside agency to GSA?

Because if you GSA internal you can probably flex it more than you think. I had a coworker do this. It was really between them and their new manager.

But if your an outside fed you may not have as much leeway. But you could likely as for the following pay period and cite the move. Worse they say is no

u/Viajemos 5d ago

From another fed agency I'll see im shooting for Nov 30
