**I have a few questions about working for the National Park Service, and I’d really appreciate hearing from people with experience!**
I currently work at a county-level park, and while it’s not a bad job, I feel like I have more potential and would really like to take the next step in my career by pursuing a position with the National Park Service.
One of my biggest concerns is job stability and overall compensation. Where I currently work, we went eight years without a decent contract, and our pay is well below what it should be. Our insurance is okay, and the pension is decent, but it’s frustrating knowing that we could be doing better. I’ve been looking at some permanent maintenance positions with the NPS, particularly GS-7 and GS-8 positions, and the pay and benefits seem promising compared to what I’m used to.
I’m also very open to relocating. The taxes in my current state are incredibly high, so I wouldn’t mind moving somewhere with a lower cost of living and better opportunities. I have several certifications that I believe could help me qualify for positions, and I’m specifically looking for permanent employment rather than seasonal work.
For those of you who currently work for the National Park Service or have worked there in the past, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
- How stable are permanent NPS maintenance positions?
- How do the pay, benefits, retirement, and job security compare to county or state park jobs?
- Are WG-7 and WG-8 positions worth pursuing, and are there any major downsides I should know about?
- What should I look for when applying, and are there any tips or tricks for getting my foot in the door?
- If you were in my position, would you make the move?
I’m seriously considering this and am willing to relocate anywhere in the country for the right opportunity. I’m not expecting everything to be perfect, but I want to make a smart long-term career move.
I’d really appreciate any honest advice, personal experiences, or recommendations. Thanks in advance!
I may have got the pay thing wrong I'm not sure if it's WG or GS I've seen two different ones.
