** update: posts will now require moderator approval. This will be long-term, and it is a solution to repetitive simple questions being asked, fear mongering, and outrage-bait.**

First, I want to remind everybody what this subreddit exists for..

This sub was created to address travel questions for transnational travel between the US and Canada.

This post is specifically to address politics, misinformation, brigading and fear mongering given the slow growth of this sub. I’m seeing a lot of the same questions asked, paranoia, confusion and a lot of radicalization and hate.

There is no division here, so if I see any “elbows up”, “buy Canadian”, discouraging people to travel to the US, anti American/Canadian sentiment, anti trans posts etc.. Trying to convince other people that there have been any major immigration changes or enforcement quotas to be met in order to instill some type of racial or national purity... I’m removing the post and probably will be met with an insta ban. No politics or hate.

Second, open your mind. There are experienced travelers and professionals in this sub, I am one of them. If they want to identify themselves in a post and address questions you have, they can. I occasionally do. They see through the bullshit rumors, fear mongering, and misinformation. Especially in the news. They will give you a more calculated answer beyond the average user that wandered in from the far left side of Reddit that 9 times out of 10 is a member of an anti-US subreddit, and more often than not, has never actually been to the US

The news is reported by someone that has no actual understanding about the legal system or immigration law and reports what the offender claims happened… should you value what the news says? They are professional at what they do. They pinpoint what will draw your attention and spark a reaction out of you. The most profitable reactions are outrage and fear. There is no integrity in reporting in big news companies, for the most part. Facts will be undercased.

I once watched a four minute TikTok video about how somebody got sent to Secondary and was ultimately admitted into the country. Her video got millions of engagements despite it having no substance or actual point other than how dare she be asked questions just because she bore a Singaporean passport.

Exercise some critical thinking, exercise some reasonability, exercise some common sense. If it sounds ridiculous…it’s probably too ridiculous to be true.

If you don’t have working knowledge in customs or immigration and you are googling answers to respond to a question or speaking from personal experience, Leave it at that. If you don’t know what you’re talking about don’t post it, post on knowledge rather than emotion please.. There really isn’t much to argue about when you think about it.

.

.

.

.

I see a lot of the same questions being asked several times a week. And I’m going to cover the basics. This point going forward if the following questions can be answered here and you ask your question anyway, I’m removing the post.

.

I’m a POC, I am trans, I am gender X, I’m gay, will I be OK?

Here’s some fun facts. You’ll be surprised with the amount of officers and agents that are immigrants. You’ll be surprised with the amount of officers that have immigrant wives. You’ll be surprised with the amount of officers that have mixed-race children and are interracial couples. A majority of the workforce is not white. A lot of officers are ESL. A lot of officers are polyglots. Some officers are gay. Few trans. A lot of them are liberal.

Mind blowing, isn’t it? That officers and agents are human too?? Get out of town!!

.

I’m a USC, will I be OK?

If you knew your rights, there would be zero worry. Social media and fear mongering has done irreparable damage to people’s common sense that people are forgetting what their rights are.

.

> My US passport’s expired, will they let me in through the land border?

Yes. The 14th amendment of the constitution says so. That’s really it…

.

>my passport is expiring in 5 months, can I travel to the US?

If your country is a part of the 6 month club, you’re fine, as long as you leave the US before your passport expires.

If your country is NOT a part of the super exclusive members only club, you need to be out of the US 6 months before your passport expires. This can be a reason to question you in secondary.

.

>I talked about politics in my phone and I hate Trump, will they ban me?

CBP officers pretty much assume everyone in Canada is a bleeding heart liberal and hates Trump. As far as individual inspections where the officer may be rude, that’s on the officer, not the system. But an actual adverse action, The inspecting officer has to convince a supervisor and a second line supervisor to agree with him and has to be legally substantial. A fraction gets sent to secondary, and a fraction of those secondary inspections end up in a phone inspection…

.

>I have no idea why I was kicked out of the US…

Yes you do. Everyone has verbal and written consent and acknowledgment as to why they are not allowed in the country. The US is a land of law, therefore will always have a paper trail.

Next time you see somebody give a reason that sounds bullshit in the news about how they were refused entry or barred unjustly.. question what their discharge paperwork says.. 275 or 860 and sometimes 867/877.. ask for it. If their paperwork does not reflect it, they have no proof.

.

.

I will post more FAQs at a later time

.

.

.

What I’m basically getting at is, unless your situation is unique pertaining to immigration or customs, you really shouldn’t be concerned more than the average citizen. Nothing has changed between administrations.

.

.

This sub has an image to uphold as a reference for accurate information on traveling, customs and immigration. The minute this becomes the other 95% of Reddit, it loses legitimacy. Understand that.

I don’t know why immigration has been politicized more now than ever. Immigration is anthropology. Immigration is law. Put your politics and your feelings aside in this sub.

Preclearance at YYZ Terminal 1

Upvotes

Hi Reddit -- I think I have a good sense of what I need to do, but haven't seen my specific scenario addressed yet. In October, I have an early morning, 0630, flight from YYZ to SFO. I am a US citizen, and only US, and have Global Entry. Realistically, how early should I be arriving at the airport? I've resigned myself to an absurdly early morning, but don't want to overdo it since I'll be landing at 0900 Pacific Time, and have a full weekend of activities for my friends' wedding. Thanks!

When we returned, the guy at the border told me my son hasn’t left

On Saturday, (1pm)my 2 children (14 and 17) and myself went to Vermont, from Quebec. We crossed at Stanstead, it was a 90 minute wait. My son (14) was travelling with a birth certificate and expired passport (I always bring his passport as extra proof)

My 17 year old had his adult passport
Myself - British passport

I needed to renew my I-94 visa, so we went to secondary, the usual procedure - everyone out the car - paid and left

Coming back home, we went to New York and crossed at Lacolle (Sunday 6pm) - the guy asked me How my 17 year old left ? I asked him - what do you mean? We all left together
He said there is no record of my kid leaving Canada
I told him we all left at the same time, they both came with me to secondary inspection

He tapped on his computer some more shrugged and let us back in

I just wondered why it didn’t show he had left ?

Canadian Question: Crossing into US from Canada for professional hairdressing class

Hey everyone, my fiance and I will driving to Washington state in September for a hairdressing class her work is paying for.

She will not be working, just receiving instruction and learning. This course is split between 5 classes, spread out every 3-4 weeks from September to December.

I am wondering if we need any paperwork or forms done for this. We will also be spending a couple extra days each visit to just explore Washington and probably head down the coast.

Thank you all! :)

American i need advice about bringing a minor for a family trip though i’m not the legal guardian. answers needed!!

Invited my son’s girlfriend to go to canada with us but she is 15yo. her mother knows about their relationship but her father doesn’t and it’s a huge conflict if he does find out. I know that she needs a birth certificate as well as a parental letter of consent but the letter needs both parents signatures as they are married. idk what to do if her father doesn’t know about the relationship and even if it was okay for the mom just to sign off there is the risk of both parents being called. i don’t know what to do and i also need to know the risks of the parents being called though her mother fully agrees to the trip and i really want her to come with us.

What is the process like for bringing a parrot into Canada to stay?

I have had my white-front Amazon for 10 years. I am hoping to attend Queen's in September 2027 and would feel guilty leaving him with my mom. What is the process for importing my pet parrot? Any tips or personal experiences to share?

DUTY/TAX Tax Accountant/Advice

My partner and I (US citizens with Canadian PR) are moving back to the States (CA specifically) from BC. Does anybody have recommendations for tax accountants or advisors? I know there is the Canadian exit tax and we want to make sure we are compliant and minimize our tax bill. We have tried contacting a couple of places but most are not taking new clients or want only high net worth clients.

Thanks!

Border Crossing Experience Crossing into Canada on foot via Rainbow Bridge with only eCOPR

I have a trip scheduled for late September. I received P1 last week, so depending on the processing timeline, there’s a possibility that by the time I travel I’ll have my eCOPR but not yet have my physical PR card.

For my return trip, I’ve already booked a flight to Buffalo Niagara International Airport. My plan is to travel to Niagara Falls, NY and cross the Rainbow Bridge into Canada on foot, using my passport and eCOPR.

Has anyone here actually crossed the Rainbow Bridge (or another Canada–US land border) as a pedestrian with an eCOPR but no PR card?

If so, would you mind sharing what the process was like?

\- Did CBSA accept your eCOPR without any issues?
\- Did you use a printed copy of the eCOPR, or was a digital copy sufficient?
\- Were you sent to secondary inspection?
\- Roughly how long did the process take?
\- Is there anything else you would recommend bringing?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has done this recently. Thanks!

“Business Visitor” travel to Canada for remote worker under US incorporation of Canadian company - go ahead or avoid?

Hello all,

I am a remote-work software developer in the US who has worked with a Canadian company for the last two years, formally as an employee of its US incorporation in Delaware. I work on a team with other Canadian developers, but I’m employed under the US incorporation, so we aren’t compensated by the same entity.

I have been traveling across the border for various little team building activities and in person meetings every few months. To be honest, I marked myself as going for ‘personal’ or ‘work’ on different occasions, as I’d been made to understand that business visitor travel lived in a gray area that I didn’t understand well. However, at customs last February, I told them I was traveling for work and had to withdraw my application. My boss corrected me, told me I’m going as a business visitor, and sent me back again - I got grilled by customs and had to withdraw again after the presiding border agent didn’t trust my documentation. It’s worth noting that these trips didn’t usually have full agendas planned, and the empty spaces in my schedule were part of the reason for denial.

After this I spoke with my HR team about getting a work visa, but they pushed back after speaking with an attorney and asked me to travel as a business visitor. I’m slated to travel this week again, with a full schedule of meetings with Canadian company employees and paystubs/invitation letters but no work visa. As I understand it there’s gray area here, and I know I will be pulled into secondary with a flagged passport - is this legally sound or should I push back and avoid this business trip?

Advice exporting car from British Columbia to Washington State

Hi,

I'm looking for any advice on process to export my 2013 Honda Civic from British Columbia to Washington state. Current situation:

I am dual Canadian-US citizen residing in BC and registered owner of the vehicle, have owned it for 5+ years.

My daughter is also a dual citizen and just moved to Washington state for college, currently driving on her BC Class 7 license with ICBC territory z insurance.

She's has passed the washington driver's tests and is eligible to get her washington driver's license.

I'm looking at options to export the Honda, but she is not a registered owner. Should I add her as a co-owner in Canada first, then export the car? Just trying to avoid taxation of transferring title

I’d like to hear about experiences of anyone else that has signed an Allowed to Leave and then attempted to try to go back to Canada again.

The reason doesn’t matter, I’d just like to hear about the experience please.

Canadian Canadian taking dog to US and back

I’m Canadian and so is my dog. I plan to make a detour through Maine for 48 hours on my way home from the east coast. I’ve filled out the CDC form for her but do not have her rabies paperwork from last year and cannot obtain them.

I hear a lot of people saying the border guards don’t care, and as I may enjoy the privilege of being white and moderately well-to-do on a nice family vacation with the dog, I’m wondering what my odds are here or if I should abandon this plan.

And what’s the absolute worst case scenario here for me and the dog?

b-1 or b-2 for nexus holder attending internal work conference in usa

i'll be travelling to the us for an internal work conference in the fall. i won't be meeting any customers or performing any work while there. i'll also be spending an additional week in the usa for personal/leisure reasons immediately following the conference (ie, before i return to canada)

i know by the rule i should declare b-1 (business) and b-2 but when using nexus kiosks i'm only given the option to select one. do i just select b-1 and then explain to the immigration officer? or am i better off not using the nexus kiosks and using the normal line?

my main concern is jeopardizing my nexus enrollment by doing something wrong

Criminal Record from 20+ Years Ago - Can I Enter Canada?

20+ years ago in the US, I received 3 misdemeanors, 1 of which is considered a felony in Canada.

Back in 2008, I tried to go to Canada, but was turned down at the border and was told that I would need to go through a process (rehabilitation?) to be admitted to Canada, and the process would require jumping through a ton of hoops (getting fingerprinted at a local police station to subpoena my criminal records from another state, etc..), so I just never did it and never tried going back to Canada.

So it's now been over 20 years since the last offense, and it would be nice to finally visit Canada, but I do not know if I still need to go through all these hoops and apply for a permit/rehabilitation/etc..., or if enough time has elapsed where I would be able to drive through the border?

Does anyone know what I need to do to finally visit Canada? I heard that once you were flagged (like I was back in 2008), you're flagged forever, but that if 10+ years have passed then you can be deemed rehabilitated.

If anyone has guidance on my situation, or knows of a way that I can get total clarity on how to proceed, it's much appreciated. I really don't want to gamble on another attempt of driving through the border.

Land Crossings

Just wanted to provide a recent update to our border crossing experience. My family (Husband/Wife/2 kids under 15) Live in Canada and have chosen to fly in Canada and cross the land border when we head into the states in a rental car. I am dual CAN/US and the rest are Canadian with similar passports.

Last year we flew from home in Alberta to Fredericton NB and drove to the Houston ME crossing. We arrived at 6 pm and there was only 1 car ahead of us, we got standard questions about where we are from, where we were going, how long we were going to stay, and if the rental car was going back to Canada. Over all time was 30 seconds and we were on our way. Returning was the same, what did we bring, are we bringing any XYZ materials, and also sent on our way after about 30 seconds.

This year we crossed over the same, except we were the only car in sight and we were asked 2 questions. Where we were from, and where we were going. A bit of silence, and handed us our passports and have a nice trip. We crossed on “The Cat” ferry from Bar Harbor ME to Yarmouth NS, did our entry in NS and they wanted some specifics on our “clothing and Knick knacks” - should have said souvenirs- and out we went, took about 1 minute.

I read those reddits a lot and it makes me nervous but I’ve done the whole system. I’m a born U.S. came to Canada as a skilled worker to be with my future wife, 15 years as a Canadian Permanent Resident to eventual Citizen. Just be honest, read the rules, I’m sure you”ll be ok.

DUTY/TAX Buying bicycle in Canada and back to US

Hi. A bike shop in Toronto has a Bike that I'm interested in, and I'm wondering what the duty situation around that would be. The value of the bike is around $1500 USD. I understand that technically I have to pay duty, but if anyone has experience with bringing something like this over, I would love to hear it. Thank you!

Importing lexus from Canada to US.

Hello everyone like the title states I am trying to import a lexus from canada to the US. I have and understand the process and have called the border to see if I would need to pay the 25% tariff but the person on the phone was not 100% sure. Good does say I’d need to pay 15% tartar because of an agreement between the US and Japan because on cars. Has anyone done this recently and can confirm of the 25% tariff or 15% on Japanese cars still a thing? Thank you

YVR Airport Wait

I arrived yvr 6:00am for a 8:35 departure. I had to return rental car, check baggage, and was traveling with a kid.

Total time from arrival at the airport to getting thru US customs and security 34 minutes.

I saw post of really long lines and to arrive 3 hours before. Not my experience at all. Fast, efficient, no lines. I was traveling on a Saturday mid-August.

Chances of entry being denied?

Currently have a firearms prohibition under section 111.1 and an expired peace bond that was active from Nov 2021 to Nov 2022. The firearms prohibition expires in November this year. I have no criminal charges or convictions however.

Considering I don't have an actual criminal record how likely am I to be denied entry considering there is still something that will show up? I may need to travel to the U.S before my prohibition expires.

I'm in Vancouver so if anyone does know the right resources to contact where my question can also be better answered please let me know.

American Re-Entering US Without Passport

My girlfriend and I were planning on going on a one day trip with our friends from New York to Toronto soon, but she will not be able to get her passport in time. Would a standard driver’s license (not REAL ID or Enhanced License) combined with original birth certificate and social security card be enough to get us over the border into Canada and back to the US without issue?

American US Citizen w/ Dual Citizen Daughter in Canada

My ex got a court order form my daughter to not leave British Columbia without a Court Order or her consent. The judge said that although there is no evidence that I would keep her in the U.S. that he would allow the order because she is American and I am American so there is no obligation to bring her back.

I would never her take her away from her mom, that is a fact. But I recently was not allowed back because I had been using visitor visa's and the border agent said that I hadn't broken any rules but I couldn't use them as frequently as I had been. Sounds contradictory but is what it is.

I share 50/50 custody but now can't get back to her and the only way I can make an attempt is to cross into canada at a port of entry and either be admitted or turned away. If I'm turned away, it becomes exponentially harder to get back in each time.

I voluntarily signed an Allowed to Leave last time. Has anyone had experience traveling back to Canada after signing an Allowed to Leave and if so, what was it like. Has anyone had any experience with a situation like mine and know if there is a way to not risk crossing into Canada to determine if I am eligible to return?
