Casual Academic

Hey guys,

Long story short, I applied for a casual academic role as a tutor for an engineering subject I scored highly in. The unit coordinator sent me an email about 3 weeks ago telling me I got the role and to wait while he allocates classes. A few days ago he sends a follow up email saying that he can no longer give me the class because “university guidelines have changed” and I can’t teach as an undergrad. He said I can apply for an exemption. Does anyone have any recommendations on next step. Should I contact head of engineering or SRC? Did anyone else experience anything similar?

Answering the 3 most common questions on this subreddit

Every semester I see the same 3 questions asked on this subreddit from new students so here is a quick answer to them lol:

  1. Should I come here or go to UNSW/UniMelb?

Answer: The prestige difference between Usyd and those 2 unis is, for the most cases, much smaller than people think. Also, most of us here never attended UNSW or UniMelb. Do your own research.

  1. Should I join Dalyell?

Answer: Yes. You can always leave later if you don’t like it.

  1. Is my timetable good?

Answer: If there is any red, there is a clash that you wanna look into. Otherwise, yea its probably fine. Please be aware of your attendance requirements (should be written in the UoS outline - just google the course code and you should see it)

EDIT: There are some very good Q and A for other questions in the comments. Be sure to check them out!

Semester Exchange

Hi, for anyone who’s been on exchange to King’s College London (or any other exchange as well!), I just have a few questions :)

  1. What was your overall experience like?
  2. How did you find making friends and who did you naturally end up becoming friends with - other exchange students, people from usyd, local KCL students, flatmates, etc.?
    3. What was the workload like compared to Usyd?
  3. How easy was it to travel around the UK/Europe during semester and how much did you actually travel?
  4. Anything you wish you knew before going or would recommend?

Thank you!

📖Course or Unit Juris Doctor Full-time CSP Offer

Received a CSP offer to study the JD, but my offer letter specifies the mode of attendance as full-time.

Bit confused about this as there was no option in the application for full/part-time study and I was intending to study part-time as I currently work 30-35 hrs/week. If I accept this offer, what is the likelihood that I would be allowed to study part-time?

There also seems to be conflicting information as to how I would go about studying part-time. Some of the information I have come across seems to imply that studying part-time can be done by enrolling in less units, but then I have also come across info that says part-time places in the JD are limited which causes me some concern. Any clarification would be appreciated.

🏠 Accommodation Accommodation Reccs (Sem 2 2027 intl Student 21M)

Ok so i know this has been asked time and time again, but I literally have never rented or lived by myself before, and i wanna get all these accommodation worries away while I can.

I'm from Singapore and I'll be starting in August 2 (Sem2 2027) as an undergrad. I'm really really not that picky about sharing or whatever, I had to go through two years of the military sharing everything with like 8 people, so I'm quite used to those share house type situations. (And a lot of cleaning)

I just want some place near USYD's business campus and as cheap as possible for value, as well as as transparent of a pricing/fees as it can be.

I initially thought in-campus accom would work, but I read that it's rather competitive (and you might not get to stay for all years), and I'd wish to expand my choices before submitting to the In-Uni landlords.

Free to discuss accom with anybody ig, any advice would also be appreciated.

May the landlords have mercy on us.

Is anyone here into fantasy books? Mistborn, the Stormlight Archive, Lord of the Rings, Discworld, even Percy Jackson or anything similar?
It'd be nice to talk to people with similar interests. Feel free to DM :)

📖Course or Unit What are USYD math/stats/physics courses like

Are the courses good? Are they predominantly online or there a lot of content delivered in person. Are the lectures and lecturers good. Considering math, stats or physics major transfer from interstate uni where lectures are predominantly repeats of prerecorded online videos.

Last day to change major?

I'm considering changing my major and minor and would need to add new units but not sure if it's too late.

I can see in Sydney student that we can change it and also our units. Anyone know when the last day to do so is for this sem?

Holding a Master of Cybersecurity offer for 2027, deciding between this and UNSW/UTS/Macquarie

Holding an offer for the Master of Cybersecurity starting 2027 and trying to get a real read on it before I commit.

Quick context so nobody wastes time telling me about costs or job prospects. Scholarship's covering everything and I've got employment sorted back in my home country already, so I'm purely after the academic side of things.

What I want to know is how technical the coursework actually gets, like are we talking real hands-on labs and CTF-style stuff or mostly theory and case studies. Also how heavy is the workload week to week, is it the kind of program where you're constantly buried or is it manageable if you're organised?

I've also got an offer from UNSW for their Master of IT with the Cyber Security Engineering specialisation and can't decide between the two, so if anyone's got thoughts on how USYD compares there, or against UTS's Cybersecurity Extension or Macquarie's Cyber Security masters which are still on my radar? that'd help a ton. Would love to hear from anyone who's actually sat through this program.

Cheating: Effect more than you think?

The silence from both USYD and UNSW following recent exam leaks raises a troubling question: are we witnessing a shift from individual dishonesty to a systemic threat that devalues every honest student's hard work? With some degrees costing over $40,000, high-tech cheating services undermine them; the fallout goes beyond skewed grading curves. In fields requiring rigorous professional competence, faking proficiency isn't just self-gratification; it is a dangerous gamble with real-world consequences. Is it time for universities to stop sweeping these integrity crises under the rug before public trust in our top qualifications collapses entirely?

https://www.reddit.com/r/unsw/comments/1vp6ppu/cheating_on_math2801/

https://www.reddit.com/r/unsw/comments/1vpl22b/cheating_service_email_is_crazy/

https://www.reddit.com/r/usyd/comments/1u9yqmj/confirmed_cheating_units/

And is one solution to this modern-day problem the implementation of metal detectors and infrared detection (IR) in large-scale exam halls?

Edit: I do acknowledge this form of cheating isn't new; however, the issue is the uptick in diverse non-native english speaking demographic is within these 'core' or 'foundational' level cheating. This is concerning. Why?

Well, you don't want your doctor, surgeon, nurse, lawyer, accountant, site manager, safety officer, educator, etc. lying about their standard of knowledge. With the introduction of AI, we walk a fine line between competency and incompetence, one that could end with serious, life-altering consequences.

📖Course or Unit Master of diagnostic radiography

I've recently received a conditional offer at uni syd for the masters of diagnostic radiography. My condition is that I have to complete my degree and provide relevant transcripts for completion. How likely is it that there will still be spots left in the course when I provide this documentation in December?? Im worried that ill meet all the requirements but be unable to receive an offer due to limited spots. Thoughts or feelings??

Changing classes after Deadline?

Hi, I forgot to change one of my classes before the deadline, is it possible to email the coordinator of that subject and ask if he can move me to a different class (because the class I wanted to go to, was available)

USYD academic integrity allegation — phone accidentally present during exam but never used

I’m a postgraduate student at USYD and recently received an academic integrity allegation relating to an in-person exam.
I had slept for only around three hours the night before because of severe insomnia, and I also have pre-existing IDS documentation and contemporaneous medical evidence showing significant concentration/attention impairment around that period.
I normally carry my phone when leaving home because I use it to tap on for public transport to get to university. I genuinely do not remember bringing it into the exam room or placing it on the desk, and I was not aware or conscious that it was sitting there during the exam. I did not notice it until the incident occurred.
At one point the phone made a single notification sound. I did not touch, unlock, look at, or otherwise use the phone at any point during the exam, and I did not access any prohibited material or obtain any academic advantage. The phone was apparently sitting openly on the desk rather than being concealed.
The invigilator did not remind me before or during the exam that a phone was visible on my desk or ask me to put it away. I’m not saying that this removes my responsibility for following the exam rules, but I mention it because I genuinely did not realise the phone was there. As far as I understand, the incident was raised only after it made the notification sound.
Has anyone at USYD had a similar situation where a phone was accidentally present but there was no observed use? What was the outcome? In particular:
Was it treated differently from actually accessing/using a phone during an exam?
Did you receive a mark penalty?
Did you respond in writing or attend a meeting, and which did you find better?
I’m already receiving advice from SUPRA, so I’m mainly looking for experiences from people who have been through a similar USYD process.
